Meeting Scheduled for Today for Some Parents of Special Needs Students

Superintendent Walter Uszenski plans to meet with "smaller groups" of parents to explain in detail all of the factors that went into a decision to move some students into Osbornville school.

A by-invitation meeting has been scheduled for tonight or some parents of special needs students who will be affected by a proposed move in September.

Board President Sharon Cantillo said during a recent Board of Education meeting that that there were numerous factors that went into the proposed move of some children from their home elementary schools to Osbornville Elementary School, and she noted that Superintendent Walter Uszenski planned to meet with "smaller groups"  of parents to explain in detail all of the factors that went into the decision.

Uszenski told Patch during a break in that meeting that the special needs program, as it is currently structured, "is headed in the wrong direction." Stronger inclusion emphasis from state education officials has necessitated some of the moves, he said.

Asked why the move had to be done so quickly, Uszenski said that will be the topic of discussion with the parents.

In a separate issue, another meeting is also scheduled for next week, on Thursday,  August 15, 2013 at 6:30 PM in the Technology Training Center, 101 Hendrickson Avenue, which a board official said related to a personnel matter.
