Where Did All Those Butterflies Come From?

Hatchlings responsible for multitudes flying around

If you've been seeing an inordinate amount of butterflies around lately, you're right. There are, experts say.

They're Red Admiral butterflies, although they at first glance do look like their more well-known cousins, the Monarch butterfly. And if you're seeing multitudes, it's because it's a birthday party.

Todd Klein, a volunteer at the Cape May Bird Observatory, said this is around the time that Red Admirals are hatching. There is some migration taking place, too, Klein said.

"But what you're likely seeing are the hatchlings from last year,'' he said. "It has just gotten warm enough that the eggs are hatching.''

The observatory tracks the movement of Monarch butterflies over time. Klein said often the Red Admiral gets confused with the Monarch because the two are similarly colored.

The sudden influx of the butterflies is called an "irruption" -- a natural, cyclical population boom that causes an increase of butterflies every few years. And the unusually warm winter we had this year helped them to thrive, experts say. A boom of this size has not been seen in 12 years, according to butterfly watchers.

If you're overrun today like so many seem to be, don't forget to send in those pictures!

When my son Paul passed away in 2007, I purchased 600 "pink lady" butterflies from Maine. We released them at his memorial service on the barrier island. They do come back. All of his friends and family members have fond memories each time we see any butterflies. But, this year, whoa there has been a ton in my butterfly garden

Good to confirmt that my butterfly identification was correct as I reported to the Hawk 105.7 late yesterday afternoon. I also seen my first hummingbird yesterday feeding off our yellow Iris'. Barn swallows made their appearace just last week and hopefully they will contribute to insect control. This recent wet weather is great for our State insect.

I saw them yesterday driving in Brick on Rt 70. Thank you for letting us know what they were!

Yesterday, hundreds of the butterflies came across Kettle Creek, migrating from south to north. The spectacle lasted at least 30 minutes. Great to see.

WOW,,, I never knew that butterflies could drive.

I always thought that butterflies came from cocoons, The butterfly lays the eggs, the eggs hatch as caterpillars, the caterpillars form a cocoon and then they transform into a butterfly. Isn't that right Clarice?..Jst ask Buffalo bill, he knows...FFFFFFFFFFF

Actually.. they both hatch from eggs. They are quite resilient and most survived the winter because it was not so harsh.

All butterflies have the same lifecycle, the one described by McMurphy. Giving Todd Klein the benefit of the doubt, he was probably simplifying to avoid having to answer a question with a biology lesson.
