Progress Made on Barrier Island Roads

Transportation workers have made significant progress on the roads in Brick township's barrier island sections.

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said crews had been working to shore up sections of Route 35 near Brick Beach III and Bayview Park that had been washed out during Superstorm Sandy.

The crews had already replaced guardrails and other roadway features and were pouring new blacktop, the mayor said.

The state highway had not yet been paved at the intersection with Herbert Street – commonly known as the turn toward the Mantoloking Bridge – however. Though significant progress had been made in the area, including a protective metal barrier put up near the ocean and grading over the area that had turned into a new inlet during the storm, a concrete or asphalt had yet to be constructed there.

Vehicles entering the island via the Mantoloking Bridge – until the intersection is rebuilt – must make an immediate right turn onto Bay Avenue, then a left onto the Downer Avenue, which leads to Route 35.

Only authorized vehicles are allowed on the island until further notice.
