A private first class in the Army, Shawn Haffey was looking forward to meeting his new baby, due any day now. Then, a tragic accident in Texas cut his life short.
Haffey, formerly a full-time Brick resident, died when he stepped onto a roadway Oct. 8, but his memory lives on.
A fundraiser held by the Jersey Strong Motorcycle Club raised more than $1900 to help his family and soon-to-be newborn child with their expenses.
Club President Rob Itri said the club wanted to help Haffey's family. His stepfather, Todd Macecsko, is in the club. But this fundraiser is just one example of the club's mission, he said.
"We are looking for other types of ways to help local people as a club," Itri said. He said the club was formed in 2008 but relaunched in 2013 as a way to help people affected by Superstorm Sandy, and others in the area who just need a hand.
