From The Depths: Benz Hauled from Bay Bottom in Brick

Work begins to pull debris from Barnegat Bay

Even one of Germany's finest automobiles was no match for Superstorm Sandy.

It's tough to tell the exact model this car was, but the body style and taillights indicate it's a midsize Mercedes-Benz, probably from the 1990s.

Crews found it in Barnegat Bay Monday afternoon and towed it to the boat ramp at Traders Cove Marina off Mantoloking Road in Brick, where it was hauled out from the murky depths.

The muddied car is suspected to have gotten washed into the waterway during Sandy.

A contract was awarded by the state last month to Crowder Gulf, a Theodore, Ala.-based company, to remove debris from the northern and central portions of Barnegat Bay, hopefully in time for the summer boating season.

Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Hajna said debris is being detected through the use of remote-sensing sonar, and identified by visual observation and previous data gathered by local municipalities.

There is no official estimate on how many cars remain at the bottom of the bay, though the DEP has said eight cars washed into the waterway near Mantoloking.

I'm no expert, but that car looks like it's been in the water way longer than from October until now.

Hey! I think that car is under the size limit. Better release it.
clamdigger March 11, 2013 at 09:21 pm
wonder if there's any treasure in it or a body in the trunk.
Wow...what a story line for a book or movie, a "hit" takes place at the Jersey Shore hours before a sever storm hits. The victim is put into (the trunk?) of the car and before the hit man can get away, the car/victim is lost in a huge rush of water. Maybe the victim was drowned in sea water and placed in the car...

Each time I visit my home for repairs, I pull something out of the lagoon that looks just like that.
It is probably that this car was washed into the bay during Sandy and metal things age quickly in salt water...and the things we are going to pull out of the bay this Summer will make this look like nothing, wait and see...

I heard that a Coast Guard vessel hit a Volvo and another boater hit a VW.

Run the vin #... then get to bottom of mystery.

Can we please open that bay to ocean pipe to get some fresh ocean water in the bay to clean these fuels out
Jim Cook March 12, 2013 at 01:05 pm
Mother nature will allow the gasoline to evaporate into the atmosphere sarge. If anyone sees desil or oil please report it to the EPA 877-WARNDEP.

Agree, sure looks that way. Maybe a better story behind it. Ya never know.

Haven't had enough high tides yet? Open bay = Ocean tides, like 5 ft tides in the bay?
Need a Change March 12, 2013 at 03:11 pm
I can't or even want to think of what's going to surface on our beaches this summer when there are people playing having fun..
Rich Wieland March 12, 2013 at 03:18 pm
The engine was flooded.
P B March 12, 2013 at 03:21 pm
Paul that is actually not true. If the pipe is done correctly it will not affect tides. Don't forget we Already have a direct link to the ocean via canal. The pipes will also stop the canal from being so turbulent. The pipes just need to be at low tide level. The current situation we are in is from a billion cubic yards of displaced sand in the bay. They need to dredge for 6 months straight.

That’s why I never use valley parking!
hippychic March 12, 2013 at 09:21 pm
that car in my opinion is very suspicious
Becki Hager March 13, 2013 at 01:20 am
OK, that's funny!
Mark Story Jenks March 13, 2013 at 05:09 am
They did run the VIN. The car WAS from Sandy. There are more to come.
Mark Story Jenks March 13, 2013 at 05:16 am
More sand in the bay does not equate to higher water in the bay. If you don't understand that, you need to go back to school. Water will seek its own level regardless of how deep or shallow the body of water may be.

You really think people are going to be PLAYING AND HAVING FUN....at the beach this summer ! ! ! !
SERIOUSLY ? ? ? ?
Kim Vittetoe March 14, 2013 at 07:27 pm
It's Valet Parking not valley parking . As for people having fun I'm sure there will be those also, you need to bring people back down to our shores and have them spend money to help those that have lost so much try and recoup a little.

I agree with quiet time. Def consideration of my neighbors if they have a sleeping baby or back yardRead More party. We surely try to respect that.

Funny Lelenore, I don't see that there are very many rules and regs. If it were elected it would notRead More be an infringement. I respect your opinion, but still feel six day time hours out of an entire week is not a lot to ask. If nothing else, would love to see a ban on gas leaf blowers. There are towns that have that in place. The mowers are not really IMHO that intrusive, but the leaf blowers and concrete cutters are another matter. Trouble is, people herebouts think they are in Montana and often are as you say, on 100 by 100 lots. What is the point of having all of this grass and trees if one never has the serenity about them to enjoy it? I think the ill effects of suburban noise pollution on health - blood pressure, aggression, release of the chemical cortisol etc. are well documented. Over a twenty five year period in time in Brick I find that this has become a real quality of life issue. At one point in my life I resided in mid town Manhattan and ya know what - being high up IT WAS QUIETER! Jackson? I don't think so. Doesn't Brielle have such an elective ordinance?

It was suppose to move next to the next liquor store behind Harbor Freight on Hooper. But,they neverRead More did.And when we pass it,it looks like they aren't even working on that side of the building. We miss that place for their deli dept.

They are waiting for the new store to get dirty and smell. It needs to be run down a little bit forRead More it to function properly.
can't say who June 19, 2013 at 05:44 pm
Right next to the liquor store. The reason it is taking so long is the politics of Acropolis andRead More Pat Botazzi. They kept the liquor store from opening for TWO years by controlling the planning board and caused the store owner HUNDREDS OF THOUSANS OF DOLLARES WITH COURT FIGHTS. Acropolis LOST THE COURT FIGHTS BUT CONTINUES TO BEAT UP ON THE LIQUOR STORE'S NEW TENNANT AS RETROBUTION Now Acropolis can play the code enforcement game and still get his happiness as a bigoted soon to be ex mayor and not a nice man. How about denying this. It is going to be a great store with the same owners and great food IF Acropolis doesn't have them go bankrupt due to him before they even open.
