Dredge Boat Visits Manasquan Inlet

Currituck will be in town through Saturday

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge boat Currituck has been operating in the Manasquan Inlet for much of the past week, federal officials said. It will remain there through Saturday.

Currituck is what is known as a special purpose hopper dredge, outfitted with pumps that suck sand into its 315 cubic yard hopper and then release it either offshore or at a near-shore site.

The dredge is working to dig channels 14 feet deep in the inlet and remove shoaling that has built up near the north jetty entrance, said Richard Pearsall,  spokesman for the Army Corps' Philadelphia district. Additionally, Pearsall said, crews are working to remove a similar shoal that has developed near the south jetty.
