Brick Neighborhood Hopes to Catch Prince Harry's Eye

Camp Osborn residents deliver a welcome message

Brick's Camp Osborn neighborhood has gotten more attention that ever before over the last six months – all of it because of the fire that destroyed the community. But today, residents are hopeful that a message of welcome will be enough to catch the eye of Prince Harry as he visits the Shore area.

Harry will pass through Brick on his way to Seaside Heights from Mantoloking. About a week ago, Camp Osborn residents – true to the friendly reputation of the neighborhood – began planning the design of a welcome banner visible from Route 35, which passes through the Camp.

The banner, which is accompanied by American and British flags, has a simple message of welcome from Camp residents. A few neighbors set up the display Monday morning.

The residents are hoping for some recognition that months after international news coverage of the storm died down, many people are still struggling without homes.

"He works very hard with the wounded warriers and many charitable organizations like his Mother, Princess Diana," said Betty Ann Fuller, who lost her primary residence in the fire.

Fuller said she was hopeful that Harry's visit will shed some additional light on the plight of Shore residents who are worried about rebuilding.

"My grandmother, Catherine Decker, was one of the full time residents in Camp Osborn," said Heather Pauwels Vinick, whose family has lived there for five generations. "I know she will appreciate the visit from the Prince, we all do."

"The whole concept that our destruction is so horrible even Prince Harry wants to see it first hand is unbelievable to me," she added.

Harry will be accompanied by Gov. Chris Christie during his visit. The pair are expected to tour Barnegat Lane in Mantoloking on foot, then travel to Seaside Heights.

The prince's ride down Route 35 will not result in the roadway being closed off, Brick Police Chief Nils R. Bergquist said, though there certain areas may be blocked temporarily.
