Brick Food Relief Group Now at Temporary Location

Hot meals still being given out after group leaves PAL building

Operation Brick Food Relief, a volunteer group that has been providing hot meals to those displaced by Superstorm Sandy since the storm struck, is now operating from a temporary location.

After reaching an agreement late last month with the Police Athletic League to remain in their Drum Point Road building, the PAL once again asked the group to leave. The PAL had originally asked the group to leave after Thanksgiving so it could resume its normal slate of programs.

Then, Operation Brick Food Relief volunteers protested the decision before the township council, from which they received support. But this time, the group left the building quietly.

"We graciously exited the building," said Hope Van Sickle, one of leaders of Operation Brick Food Relief.

Van Sickle said the group may find a permanent location to base its hot food service – as well as upcoming Christmas volunteer efforts – as early as sometime Monday.

But for now, the group has partnered with Starlight Relief Ministries to cook and prepare meals at their location at the Fellowship Chapel, 170 Duchess Lane. The building is commonly known as the former Old Guard building.

The temporary location does not have enough room for storm victims to come in and sit down to eat, however, and the meals are being provided to go.

Meals will be provided Monday evening from 4 to 6 p.m., Van Sickle said.

The group also announced that Starlight has donated coats, work gloves, cleaning supplies, clothes, footwear, and other items that can be provided to those who need them.

In my opinion, and we all have one, PAL and the PBA need a kick in the butt. There will be no more support for either group from this house !!

To be fair, I think the PAL should be able to provide a response as to why they declined the organization to stay once again. There is always two sides to a story. It is ashame though that this can not be resolved.

In reality, even though it sounds harsh...things at some point must be returned to normal. I know that things will not be normal for Sandy victims for a long time to come, but this building has a purpose and it has to return to normal operations at some point....and whenever they chose to do so, whether it is now or in a few months, people would have a problem with it. I don't particularly side with their decision, but I dont really think they should be the target of hatred for wanting to reclaim their space.

How big of the PAL to let the Brick Operation Food Relief stay a whole extra week after their "pact". Perhaps it would have been less heartless to the food relief and all those still relying on their meals to let them stay at least until they had another location. I hope the word gets out to everyone in the area that has supported the relief effort about PAL's actions.

will never make another donation to the PAL or the PBA again. And i wasn't taking food. that is just unbelievable...Sure things have got to get back to normal but there really isn't a time frame on "normal". Sorry to hear the PAL thinks their "normal" operations are more important, screw them.

The PAL needs a course in sensitivity.

it may seem like things are back to normal as you ride around Brick but there are still many people without homes who haven't been able to find housing and are in need of this service..you can't cook in a hotel nor eat out every day...typical in my opinion of the I'm better than you attitude by some..and judgemental non compassion by the PAL

I worked very closy w/Hope as well as countless others, who gave their time for countless hours & the amount of people who are affected by the storm is unbelievable. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to help the community. The people who run should hang their heads in shame for doing this..I hope the guilt keeps them awake at night, that the faces of the children whos house were destroyed make them so sick to their stomachs. What a horrible thing to do..again. why? Because yoga & karate classes are more important than people? If I were some1 that attended either of those there I would gladly wait til classes resumed & would most certainly want the relief center to continue. Now as well as many others the relief center is displaced. It will be back stronger than ever. PAL will no longer get any support from me..my friends or family. I will tell every1 I know to boycott!!...i hope they all get coal in their stockings!!

There is no way they can keep this service going there long enough to please everyone. People will be out of their homes and trying to recover for a long time to come...and whenever they decided to stop allowing this service to go on there, people would be upset. I think there must be some other local venue with room for people to sit down and have their meal. There are abandoned, empty buildings all over town..the old Dennys, the old WOW. Maybe some owner of a vacant building could step in and open it up to the community for a period of time.

Jack you don't have to keep defending your organization it was the way they went about kicking this group to the curb that will linger in the public's minds for quite a long time.

i will make a point of making sure EVERYONE in Baywood knows this story. I know many don't read the Patch or have a clue about this...If I have to post it on telephones I will make sure PAL does not get another penny from any of my neighbors. a bunch of scum.

jeffrey j wesrdyke December 11, 2012 at 01:20 pm
It will take a week for any one to find the new location if they do at all!!!!
Need a Change December 11, 2012 at 03:37 pm
@Jack Your kidding go use The Wow or Dennys building ...They need to to be cleaned up ,get cooking stoves if available working, Tables ,chairs, Plus there up for sale or rent..We know that may take time cause there are many new building around..But doesn't Brick own your building and isn't your building set up and in working conditions to help people who still need your service...?? Why wait to set up another building when PAL is working NOW ! Shame on you ..No more support to PaL from Me...You have lost respect from this tax payer..and supporter...

What it tells most Jack is that you have your own mission and could care less about anybody else

According to someone who answered the phone at the Mayor's office, right after the PAL threw Relief organization out, the dane and kick-boxing classes were being held in the schools. There was real reason that PAL had to get back in the building at that time. Same here - no donations for the PAL / PBA from my entire extended family.
