Memorial Honors Fallen Fishermen

Monument lists names of local fishermen who died; includes sculpture of Capt. James Mears of the Mandy Ness

A memorial sculpture honoring local fishermen who died while undertaking their dangerous work was unveiled Saturday in Barnegat Light.

The memorial monument features a sculpture of Capt. James Mears, whose boat Mandy Ness went down in the ocean in 2012, claiming Mears' life.

Since the January 2012 tragedy, family and friends of Mears, as well as local officials, organized an effort for a fishermen's memorial.

The monument is opposite the entrance to Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, overlooking the channel to Barnegat Inlet. It was designed by noted local sculptor Brian Hanlon of Toms River, who is also well known in Ocean County for designing Brick Township's "Angel in Anguish" memorial to Sept. 11 victims.
