Councilman Milano

Friday November 22, 2013 marks the 50 year anniversary of the death of President Kennedy. It also marks the 40 year anniversary of the death of another great local political figure, Michael Anthony Milano who passed away just 10 years later on the same day (Thanksgiving day) in 1973 from a grueling fight against cancer.

Many people reading this would not have been born or were too young to remember all of his extraordinary accomplishments during his short 45 year life. Michael fought in the Korean War, graduated Union County College, and built his first home in Brick Town at the young age of 18. He was a member of the holy name society at the Visitation Church where he developed and managed the Visitation Church’s catechism (Sunday School) classes.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Brick "836", was elected to the Brick Town Council severing two terms as Council President for four years, chairman of the Cancer society, and an industrial art teacher at Freehold Regional High School. He received his masters degree from Trenton State College, founded the Boys Club of Brick Town (this died when he did) and in 1969 started one of the first township recycling centers in the country.

He fathered Michael II, Mark, Greg, Steven and Marybeth, started Milano and Sons Builders, built his second family home in Brick town and performed many unselfish deeds for the people in the Brick Town community.

His greatest accomplishment of all was marring Marylou Salarelli who loved, advised and stood by his side through the good times and the difficult ones. After our father's death, our mother took up many of his efforts; staying involved in the Junior sports league and the local political issues, as well as raising 5 children while working a full time job as a single parent. Falling to the same dieses of cancer only 7 years later, also passed at the young age of 45.

I know I can speak for my entire family when I say; I would never trade the short time spent with my Father and Mother who taught us Love, Honesty, Fair Play and Hard Work for anything, other than to wish they could be here with the ever expanding Milano Family.

Sincerely

The Milano Family
