Though I will not do so myself, I can understand (but not agree) why some residents dump small items of insecticide, paint thinner, rust remover etc. down the sewer or hide them in their regular garbage bags for pickup. If the County continues to require residents to "jump through hoops" then it is simply asking for people to "beat the system" We need a simpler way to dispose of often miniscule amounts of hazardous material. I recently had a quart container of old paint and a mostly empty container of laminate floor cleaner. To dipose of them I had to wait for the one of the two annual disposal days when the Manchester Public Works garage was available for that purpose. I then had to make an appointement and I was given 4:00 PM on a Friday afternoon. Of course, photo id was requested when I delivered these two items to the attendant. Let me tell you that ii was hard to resist the temptation to hide them in my regular trash bag for weekly pickup. But I did do the right thing.

i agree john. there should just be a way to drive to the recycling center on any day and drop it off. the way they set it up all sorts of chemicals will end up in our waterways

Used gasoline?
Anyway, I agree with John. I have some motor oil that is mixed with antifreeze from a blown engine. I've been holding onto it for years. When I went to the southern ocean recycling center I was told they'd take it during this collection day. I really hope so.

Other counties are less strict.
In Union county it is only certain days at certain sites, but no registration is required and they do not check ID. You simply drive up and they quickly and efficiently take the stuff - no questions asked. That 's the way it needs to be for the program to be a success. Not sure why Ocean County can't do the same.
