Demolition continues on Seaside Height's Funtown Pier, which was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.
Just a short walk down the debris-littered beach in Seaside Heights, work is underway on Casino Pier. Despite the presence of a roller coaster still sitting in the ocean, positive reconstruction has been going on for several months. Officials even say they plan on reopening a portion of the pier, along with some rides, by Memorial Day. It's a different story at Funtown Pier. The amusement rival remains a wreck following Hurricane Sandy's arrival at the resort town in late October. The pier, which arguably received more damage during the storm than Casino Pier, is in disarray. Large portions of it have been removed, though what remains will also likely have to go. The pier's most prominent feature, its Ferris wheel, sits half on its …

Jenkinson's, Risden's, Martell's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches to be open
The public beaches in Point Pleasant Beach will be fully open by Memorial Day weekend or before, company officials said on Friday afternoon. While some Sandy-bashed beaches at the Jersey Shore are not going to be fully open by summer's unofficial start, those in Point Beach are on track to be accessible and staffed as usual. "The beaches will be open 100 percent the weekend before Memorial Day weekend and everything will be safe and clean, as it was last year," said Anthony Storino, president of Jenkinson's. Alice Lyons, owner of Risden's, said the beach will be open fully by Memorial Day weekend. Carla Vitale, daughter of Jay Vitale, owner of Aqua-Serve, said that the Maryland Avenue and Bradshaw's beaches will be open this summer as …

Iconic restaurant opened for the season Tuesday
It's not the absence of snow, new buds on the trees or even the first sighting of a Robin in a back yard somewhere that says spring is in the air at the Shore. It's the onion rings. The Circus Drive-In, that Route 35 mainstay in Wall Township, put its tent flaps up on its 59th season Tuesday. It is spring, Shore residents. It is spring.
Alex's Inlet Bait and Tackle counting on fundraiser to stay open
For Marc Palazzolo, owner of Alex's Inlet Bait and Tackle in Point Pleasant Beach, the government's promise to help Sandy-ravaged businesses is just a fish tale. So he's relying on his friends and customers to help him keep his bait and tackle shop afloat on Inlet Drive, where Sandy sent the ocean barrelling into homes and businesses, leaving a soggy heap of debris and financial ruin in its wake. Five months later, Palazzolo, like so many other business owners at the Jersey Shore, is still struggling to open for good. Last week, he was finally operating on a limited basis, but the "open" sign on the door threatens to drop off the nail, like a fish wriggling off a hook. "I thought we would need $15,000 to $20,000 to clean out and re-open…
Taxi company sued township after license renewal was denied
The township council has declined to settle a legal dispute with New Mantoloking Taxi. The taxi company first found itself in the crosshairs of the township – as well as its neighbors – after it illegally paved over a residential lot and began using it for parking. Since then, the township's planning board denied an after-the-fact application to rezone the land; the lot had to be torn up. But complaints from residents and a number of alleged zoning and code violations at the company spurred the council to deny renewing the company's taxi licenses last fall, resulting in an almost immediate order by a Superior Court judge to stay the council's vote and allow the company to continue operating as litigation proceeded. That litigation could …

Are you an area business that is Jersey Strong and open for business? Tell us in the comments below the article!
The Jersey Shore is open for business. So promises a video produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) featuring several local businesses that have reopened following Hurricane Sandy. In brief vignettes spliced with images and slogans of the shore's recovery, business owners and employees from Sandy-impacted towns invite customers back to their businesses by letting them know that not only are they open, but that in spite of the late-October storm they remain "Jersey Strong." The Beachcomber in Seaside Heights, Bain's Hardware in Sea Bright, and Used to Be's in Mantoloking are just some of the businesses featured in the video, which ends with a clip of a recent Gov. Chris Christie speech praising New Jersey's residents for …

Some amusement rides were operating as Point Pleasant Beach welcomed visitors back to its boardwalk.
No one expected the Jersey Shore to rebound quickly following Hurricane Sandy. Resort communities all along the coast are still rebuilding, hoping to have everything up and in working order by the summer tourist season. While a pre-Sandy existence is the ultimate goal, shore towns are making strides every day. It's not there yet, but it will be. On a cold and blustery Saturday in Point Pleasant Beach, visitors walked the boards - those sections that have been finished - to see the construction progress, patronize some game stalls, and enjoy rides on the recently re-opened Jenkinson's Boardwalk. "It means a lot to us to see this re-opened," Point Beach resident Michelle Lebowitz said. "That's why we're here today, even in the cold." Access…

Two more signs of "Point Beach Back in Business"
Jenkinson's rides are re-opening today on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach and Farrell's Stout and Steak, 401 Broadway, is having its grand re-opening weekend. Both local businesses were hard hit by Superstorm Sandy, have undergone extensive renovations and are now coming alive in time for the beginning of spring and the promise of summer. The businesses join the ranks of many on Ocean Avenue, Broadway and the downtown area of Arnold and Bay avenues that are open and hoping the summer helps make up for what Sandy's wrath left behind. "We're letting people know that Point Pleasant Beach is open for business and ready for the summer," said Councilman Michael Corbally, liaison to the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce, at a …

Station will be closed until mid-May, officials said Monday
If you’re used to filling up your tank at the Monmouth service area of the Garden State Parkway, you’re going to have to alter your plans for the next couple of months, officials said. Sunoco, which operates gas stations on the parkway, has shut down the facility just north of Exit 98 in Wall while it upgrades the facility, officials said. The work is similar to that done at the Cheesequake, Atlantic City and Forked River service areas, said Tom Feeney, New Jersey Turnpike Authority spokesman. The work at the Monmouth service area is expected to be complete by mid-May, Feeney said. Only the fuel service will be affected. The rest of the service area will operate as normal, Feeny said. During that time, the nearest open gas station on the …

Governor was in Seaside Heights for the grand opening of a Home Depot satellite store
The newly-opened Home Depot satellite location in Seaside Heights will play a "central" part in helping local barrier island residents recover from Superstorm Sandy, said Gov. Chris Christie. "Home Depot is going to be a place that is going to be central to providing us with the supplies we need to make the recovery real and the assistance that we need to help folks get their work done as quickly as possible," Christie said during a Monday morning grand opening celebration. The store, located on Sumner Avenue in the same building as the White Pearl Hotel, employs disaster specialists with an aim of providing consultations and arranging delivery of goods to Sandy-stricken residents on the barrier island. During the visit to Seaside …
