Investors Savings Bank ready to move into town

The bank operates about 85 branches across New Jersey and New York, and will build its Brick location at the corner of Brick Boulevard and Hooper Avenue. UPDATE: Council votes for preliminary approval for second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m.
Point Beach council voted on Tuesday night for bars to close at midnight, two hours earlier than the current 2 a.m. closing time. Councilmembers Kristine Tooker, Bret Gordon and Michael Corbally voted for the earlier bar closing, while Councilmembers William Mayer, Tim Lurie and Stephen Reid voted against it. That left Mayor Vincent Barrella to break the tie, and he voted yes. The ordinance goes into effect on July 1. The council also voted for preliminary approval for a second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m., which is the current closing time. However, councilmembers agreed to postpone the deadline for bars to request a later closing time from the town. That deadline had been May 24 but was moved to …
Boardwalk still offering $800,000 over five years, despite state saying proposed bar ordinance "appears to be unlawful"
A Boardwalk offer to pay $800,000 over five years is "still on the table," despite that the state says a related town proposal "appears to be unlawful." Marilou Halvorsen, Director of Marketing for Jenkinson's Boardwalk, said late Tuesday afternoon that Jenkinson's and Martell's are still jointly offering the payment, despite that the state Department of Community Affairs is questioning the legality of a proposed ordinance that would compel bars to pay fees to stay open past midnight (see related story posted on top of home page). "But if they pass a 12 o'clock bar closing, I'm sure it won't be," Halvorsen said. "But our offer is still on the table because it's in everyone's best interest to come up with a resolution," she said. Now it …

Cue the montage of rooftop mini golf and Whac-A-Mole: in this 2010 promotional video the amusements of Seaside Heights are on display. We unearthed this 2010 video produced to entice visitors to Seaside Heights with images of the thrill rides, kiddie carousels, "high tech" arcade machines and boardwalk games of chance. It was a (slightly) more innocent time. The first season of the MTV show which bears the town's name had been aired, but it was more of a novelty then. Check out the video, which was produced by Seaside Heights Tourism.Although two years old, has much changed along the boards since then? Did this video stand the test of time and would it get you to visit Seaside? Has the cast of the MTV show negatively affected the town - or…

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.
Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett, refused and left the interview according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

Building will grow 26,300 square feet
The leveling of land next to a plaza in the Silverton section of Toms River, just over the Brick border, signals the expansion of a parking lot and the possible addition of a tenant there. The addition coming to town is located at the northbound side of Hooper Avenue on the far side of the plaza containing CVS Pharmacy, Dunkin’ Donuts and Buy Rite Liquors on Silver Bay Road. There, the Club Metro USA fitness facility will be expanding their parking lot and the plaza it’s located in will be expanding also, according to Toms River Township Planner Jay Lynch. “This particular expansion was approved by the planning board. The fitness facility is located in a shopping center that has approval to expand both the building and the parking lot, …

Building no longer for sale after potential buyer fell through
Civic Plaza is no longer for sale. The township-owned shopping plaza on Chambers Bridge Road, which currently houses the recreation office, was put up for sale in January, but negotiations with a potential buyer fell through, officials said this week. Now, the decision has been made to retain the strip mall. "We're going to rent it out at market rate," Councilman Jim Fozman said this week, adding that the township may also look to relocate the senior center there from its current location at the VFW hall on Adamston Road. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said this week, however, that moving the senior center there is "not something we're absolutely going to do," and he may favor renting the entire strip mall out to tenants at market price. Until…

Bahama Breeze to come to mall's southwest corner on Hooper and Bay
The Ocean County Mall will be home to a new Caribbean-style restaurant, an expanding chain called Bahama Breeze. The eatery will be located at a pad site separate from the actual mall building, according to officials. “It has been approved by the town planning board,” said Toms River Township Planner Jay Lynch. “But the company is going through compliance resolution, which means there are still some more approvals it needs to receive in order to receive the proper permits.” No timeline has been set for the project’s start or completion, but Lynch said it has been approved for a liquor license. The restaurant will be located on the southwest side jughandle by Hooper and Bay avenues, Lynch said. “They're going to redesign the parking in the …
