UPDATE: Funeral Information For Whiting Man, 73, Fatally Struck By Car While Sitting On A Bench

Joseph O'Connor died as a result of the injuries he sustained from being pinned against the building

Funeral information is now available for a 73-year-old Whiting man who died Friday after a vehicle struck him while he was sitting on a bench, police said.

At 9:50 a.m., Joseph O'Connor, 73, was sitting on the bench in front of the Route 530 CVS store when he was struck and killed by a 2012 Subaru Forester wagon.

The wagon was operated by Evelyn Treibly, 76, also of Whiting, police said. O'Connor died as a result of the injuries he sustained from being pinned against the building by the vehicle, police said.

Visiting hours will be Wed 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at The Family Owned Carmona Bolen Home For Funerals, 66 Lacey Road, Whiting, according to legacy.com.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday 10:45 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, Whiting, according to legacy.com. Disposition will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in O'Connor's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105. Condolences may be sent to www.carmonabolenfh.com, according to legacy.com.

The CVS Pharmacy also sustained damage and was temporarily closed until the Manchester building inspector could conduct an investigation.

O'Connor was born in Jersey City amd lived in Old Bridge for 37 years before moving to Pine Ridge South, Whiting in 2001, according to legacy.com.

He was employed as a Baker for Sunshine Biscuit in Sayreville for 26 years before his retirement in 1999. Prior to that, he worked at Dean Witter and Co. on Wall Street for 14 years, according to legacy.com.

O'Connor was an avid Frank Sinatra fan and collector, and was also an avid collector of anything else that anybody collected. He loved to shoot pool and play cards with his friends, as well as shopping at flea markets, according to legacy.com.

This crash is under investigation by Patrolman Antonio Ellis of the Manchester Traffic Safety Bureau.

Why 65? Should be every 5 years for everyone. Roided- up twenty-somethings and middle-aged soccer moms cause just as many accidents.

"How I agree after having moved here from NYC." They told me they cannot do this.
Retest seniors. I believe they should after seeing someone on Route 9 with 2 hearing aides driving. We made my dad give up his license at age 79. What is their problem here in NJ??

It is amazing to me how this is the only news place that has this story. There are many details missing as well, which may be helpful to know.

When Evelyn pulled into the parking space at CVS, she accidentally hit the gas instead of the break. She then hopped the curb, hit Joe, took out the park bench, and then hit CVS. The wall on the inside of CVS didn't receive a lot of damage, but all the heavy shelving units came down right where a CVS employee was standing. Had he jumped over the counter a second later than he did, he might also be dead, or at least severely injured. A small portable heater stopped the wall for an extra second, which allowed him to jump freely out of the way.

911 was called immediately, and the store customers were asked to leave. Mrs. O'connor stayed in the store, as the store employees comforted her the best as possible until one of her friends or relatives arrived. One of the pharmacists and a police officer were outside performing CPR until the ambulence arrived (which was less a couple of minutes). It then took at least twenty minutes or more before anyone knew anything.

Once the cops came in much later and wanted to speak with Mrs. O'connor, we all knew it was over. For those who were there, and for those who were involved, this will be a hard day to forget. In the words of Mrs. O'connor as she was being taken home, "It all feels like a really bad dream..."

RIP Joe. All love and prayers are with the family.

it's not the first time and won't be the last time someone accidently hit a building which caused injuries.

maybe if the bench wasn't there nothing bad would have happened other than to the car and the building. maybe in the future, cement posts will be installed in front of areas that will have seating in front of parking spaces.

Clamdigger:

If the bench was not in place where it was, the man sitting on the bench would still be alive, but the cashier on the other side of the wall would probably be dead. However, the cement posts are an extremely good idea, as they could have prevented the whole thing.

Who are you and how do you know this? Where you an eyewitness? I heard there was no curb to jump or no cement barrier. From what I know the handicap space did only have a flat surface with no curb or concrete barrier. This is what I heard so how did she jump a curb that did not exist? And why a bench in front of a handicap parkiing area with no curb or concrete barrier CVS?

Someone once said, "You never know where the day will take you." I'm sure Joseph O'Connor had no inkling Friday would take him to his eternal rest. My condolences to the O'Connor family.
Again, the reflexes, awareness, and ability of an aging population to safely operate a car comes into question.Who, out there, thinks Mr. O'Connor's tragic death was intended? No doubt, the fact that she killed a man will haunt Evelyn Treibly until her dying day-a greater punishment than the law can impose. It's time something is done to re-test & re-evalulate senior citizens' ability to safely & responsibly operate a motor vehicle. Can we at least begin the conversation?

What does 2 hearing aids have to do with driving at 43?? We are talking about people in thier 70's whos sight is deminished..whose reaction time is diminished and in some cases thier minds are also..

Im sorry to the family....especially the wife and son who were forced to see what transpired. what a mess. RIP Mr. O'Connor. I live in Whiting with my mother and grandmother and have my son here on weekends whom is 2. I was out there at CVS last week taking my 2 yr. old out of the cart RIGHT in front of that bench on a rainy day. I think that could be us any day of the week when we go out in this area....its disgusting. Whiting is VERY DANGEROUS. The problem I have is these people are given MANY options for free transportation and minimal cost transportation that most refuse to take. I can understand wanting your freedom as you get older but to know you can't even stay in the lines on the street like most cant or not be able to see above the steering wheel?! I just dont understant how anyone could live with themselves knowing they have issues driving and at any moment they could kill someone if they mistake the pedals. I feel no remorse for the woman, she should be charged just like any one of us would be. She killed a man in a nearly brand new vehicle that most couldnt dream of affording in this economy. MY very own grandmother has been warned if she has any other accident that would do any damage to anything PERIOD she will lose her privalages in a heartbeat as it should be if she cannot drive accordingly. I agree whole heartedly with this and they SHOULD be retested. Lets take a look at the statistics of accidents here and then tell me who does more damage!! So sorry RIP!!

Jennifer, to quote you:

"... in a nearly brand new vehicle that most couldnt dream of affording in this economy."

She was driving a 2012 Subaru Forester, not exactly a top end manufacturer, it's a decent vehicle but not exactly one that people would consider an extravagant purchase or a vehicle that is a head turner. They are considered to be good safe wagons/SUV's but nothing more than that.

Did anyone check and see if she had an after market floor mat, becuse what happens is, if it's not locked to the floor it could work it's way up over the gas pedal and when you push down on the break your also pushing on the gas pedal and the harder you push the faster you go. RIP Joe.

I just hope Evelyn Treibly was given a blood test. A lot of these seniors don't understand the side affects of their medication. And the fact that it makes them quite impaired to operate a vehicle.

So far, comments have been made blaming the car, blaming the location of the bench, blaming the medication...and Jennifer has stated that if her grandmother has another incident, she will lose driving priviledges...how about takng that license away BEFORE something else happens. She is obviously already a risk, or she wouldnt have that threat hanging over her! I agree with most of the comments, however...and I do believe that the State is not discriminating by requiring retesting , because DRIVING IS NOT A RIGHT....IT IS A PRIVILEDGE!!! Once again, if people cannot use common sense to monitor their abilities and behavior, the government has to come in and do it!

That is what I am saying the police are too scared to confront seniors that should not be driving. They are the leading cause of accidents not being in most themselves. The seniors have such a powerful lobby in NJ that you can not do anything to prevent this from happening. Do you know why you can not pump your own gas in NJ? The senior lobby has fought it for years because they would be paying more if someone pumped it for them. Only 2 states do not allow it, NJ is one of them.

this same thing happened at rite aid in whiting a few months ago, only thankfully no on was hurt...woman hit the gas and drove thru the front of the store. I live in whiting and I see seniors barely able to walk their cart thru the grocery store and then get in and drive...I am almost 60 and I totally agree that there needs to be licensing re-testing every few years. It is really dangerous out here, as weird as that sounds...I am going to move for that very reason. may Joe rest in peace and blessings to his family.

As in life: there was only one Frank Sinatra in this lifetime of ours there also was only one Joe O’Connor.
Joe It was an honor to know you.
There will never be a time went I hear a Sinatra Song, that I will not think of you.

I worked with Joe in Sunshine biscuits for 26 years. Joe was a true friend of mine in every sense of the word. I used to get a kick out of how much he loved Frank Sinatra.

There was a time when Sinatra was playing at Carnegie hall in the NYC and my wife was given by a friend who was sick at the time, 4 tickets to see him. I gave up my ticket for Joe. Joe went with my wife and her mother and father. My wife said that they keep walking down to the front the stage and Joe kept saying “there must be a mistake we are to close” but there was no mistake he was four rows from the stage. Joe kept on telling my wife I think he’s looking at us. Little did he know till the lights came on that to his left three seats down from him was Frank Sinatra wife Nancy, sitting there. When I think back on it now on how it was a once in a lifetime event for Joe it still makes me happy.
God bless you Joe, till we meet again on the other side.
