how tragic, so sad. I also live in Whiting and yes, there are some scary drivers on Rt. 530 as well as schoolhouse rd. RIP......did she just lose control? is she being charged? RIP and condolences to family and friends.

It is amazing to me how this is the only news place that has this story. There are many details missing as well, which may be helpful to know.

When Evelyn pulled into the parking space at CVS, she accidentally hit the gas instead of the break. She then hopped the curb, hit Joe, took out the park bench, and then hit CVS. The wall on the inside of CVS didn't receive a lot of damage, but all the heavy shelving units came down right where a CVS employee was standing. Had he jumped over the counter a second later than he did, he might also be dead, or at least severely injured. A small portable heater stopped the wall for an extra second, which allowed him to jump freely out of the way.

911 was called immediately, and the store customers were asked to leave. Mrs. O'connor stayed in the store, as the store employees comforted her the best as possible until one of her friends or relatives arrived. One of the pharmacists and a police officer were outside performing CPR until the ambulence arrived (which was less a couple of minutes). It then took at least twenty minutes or more before anyone knew anything.

Once the cops came in much later and wanted to speak with Mrs. O'connor, we all knew it was over. For those who were there, and for those who were involved, this will be a hard day to forget. In the words of Mrs. O'connor as she was being taken home, "It all feels like a really bad dream..."

RIP Joe. All love and prayers are with the family.

Someone once said, "You never know where the day will take you." I'm sure Joseph O'Connor had no inkling Friday would take him to his eternal rest. My condolences to the O'Connor family.
Again, the reflexes, awareness, and ability of an aging population to safely operate a car comes into question.Who, out there, thinks Mr. O'Connor's tragic death was intended? No doubt, the fact that she killed a man will haunt Evelyn Treibly until her dying day-a greater punishment than the law can impose. It's time something is done to re-test & re-evalulate senior citizens' ability to safely & responsibly operate a motor vehicle.Can we at least begin the conversation?

My mom just got a car at 75a the insurance in lakewood nj told her by law she has thirty days to have a physical and eye test in order to get car insurance. I am very pleased about this law..... more needs to be done as well. So sorry for this tragedy.

i worked with joe at sunshine biscuits for many years - this is a tragic accident where unfortunately joe was at the wrong place at the wrong time - now is not the time to debate but the time to mourn the loss of a good man - our thoughts and prayers go out to the family - you will be greatly missed my friend!!!

Im sorry to the family....especially the wife and son who were forced to see what transpired. what a mess. RIP Mr. O'Connor. I live in Whiting with my mother and grandmother and have my son here on weekends whom is 2. I was out there at CVS last week taking my 2 yr. old out of the cart RIGHT in front of that bench on a rainy day. I think that could be us any day of the week when we go out in this area....its disgusting. Whiting is VERY DANGEROUS. The problem I have is these people are given MANY options for free transportation and minimal cost transportation that most refuse to take. I can understand wanting your freedom as you get older but to know you can't even stay in the lines on the street like most cant or not be able to see above the steering wheel?! I just dont understant how anyone could live with themselves knowing they have issues driving and at any moment they could kill someone if they mistake the pedals. I feel no remorse for the woman, she should be charged just like any one of us would be. She killed a man in a nearly brand new vehicle that most couldnt dream of affording in this economy. MY very own grandmother has been warned if she has any other accident that would do any damage to anything PERIOD she will lose her privalages in a heartbeat as it should be if she cannot drive accordingly. I agree whole heartedly with this and they SHOULD be retested. Lets take a look at the statistics of accidents here and then tell me who does more damage!! So sorry RIP!!

Did anyone check and see if she had an after market floor mat, becuse what happens is, if it's not locked to the floor it could work it's way up over the gas pedal and when you push down on the break your also pushing on the gas pedal and the harder you push the faster you go. RIP Joe.

I just hope Evelyn Treibly was given a blood test. A lot of these seniors don't understand the side affects of their medication. And the fact that it makes them quite impaired to operate a vehicle.

Were these benches legally placed in an obvious dangerous location, and also were they part of original site plan and approved by Manchester Engineering Dept.

Billy Jones hit the nail right on the head! Too many seniors driving while "Intoxicated" from prescription drugs and being impaired butv as long as they can drive to their doctors office the ins pays the bills! RIP Mr Oconnor shouldn't have died NOT driving in Whiting!

So far, comments have been made blaming the car, blaming the location of the bench, blaming the medication...and Jennifer has stated that if her grandmother has another incident, she will lose driving priviledges...how about takng that license away BEFORE something else happens. She is obviously already a risk, or she wouldnt have that threat hanging over her! I agree with most of the comments, however...and I do believe that the State is not discriminating by requiring retesting , because DRIVING IS NOT A RIGHT....IT IS A PRIVILEDGE!!! Once again, if people cannot use common sense to monitor their abilities and behavior, the government has to come in and do it!

this same thing happened at rite aid in whiting a few months ago, only thankfully no on was hurt...woman hit the gas and drove thru the front of the store. I live in whiting and I see seniors barely able to walk their cart thru the grocery store and then get in and drive...I am almost 60 and I totally agree that there needs to be licensing re-testing every few years. It is really dangerous out here, as weird as that sounds...I am going to move for that very reason. may Joe rest in peace and blessings to his family.

I worked with Joe in Sunshine biscuits for 26 years. Joe was a true friend of mine in every sense of the word. I used to get a kick out of how much he loved Frank Sinatra.

There was a time when Sinatra was playing at Carnegie hall in the NYC and my wife was given by a friend who was sick at the time, 4 tickets to see him. I gave up my ticket for Joe. Joe went with my wife and her mother and father. My wife said that they keep walking down to the front the stage and Joe kept saying “there must be a mistake we are to close” but there was no mistake he was four rows from the stage. Joe kept on telling my wife I think he’s looking at us. Little did he know till the lights came on that to his left three seats down from him was Frank Sinatra wife Nancy, sitting there. When I think back on it now on how it was a once in a lifetime event for Joe it still makes me happy.

this is getting rediculous...buildings keep getting hit: riteaid, foodtown, postoffice, cvs, houses.....I feel all stores should put up concrete posts to protect citizens as well as buildings themselves(posts like wawa in whiting has)
