Wawa Stores Try to Stay Open During Storm, Though Some Have Closed

Company: we'll stay open to serve the community and first responders

If you didn't think Sandy's threat was serious before, perhaps you will now. Wawa, the venerable food store that never seems to close, will evacuate many of its locations in coastal areas.

Despite heeding evacuation orders where mandatory, however, the company said in a statement Sunday night that it would try to keep as many of its stores as possible open during the storm.

"Wherever possible, as long as the safety of our customers and associates is not compromised, we will attempt to remain open in order to serve the community and the first responders who count on us during times of crisis," the company said.

The company said it closed several of its stores in southern New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland after the areas in which they were located had been evacuated. Local Wawas that have closed include:

  • Normandy Beach (Toms River/Brick)
  • Ship Bottom (Long Beach Island)
  • North Beach Haven (Long Beach Island)
  • Barnegat Township
  • Margate
  • Ocean City
  • Brigantine

The full list of stores that have closed is available on the company's website.

I'm at wawa right now exit 91 n the manager said, "no way we are closing." they are selling classics for two bucks flat if power goes out! If the workers are there they should work through the storm. How do you think their apple phones got made? Btw, what's up with the free umbrellas they are giving away?

When I was there about 8 last nite, they said they were closing at 10. Guess the manager changed his mind! Since the driving ban went into effect at 11, why do they need to stay open?

Definitely agree with 0530.. no need for you idiots who cannot even type or spell full sentences to venture out to your local wawa because you can't make your own sandwiches. Most, if not all, of the roads were supposed to be closed by 11pm, so these people should be going home just like the rest of you.

yeah but where are police, the road crews, emergency services, tree trimmers & utilities companies workers going to getthier coffee & food? All restaurants are closed people think. Many of the utility & tree crews are from out of state so they can’t run home for a meal. Besides go back a few years back, the stores stayed open. The biggest threat of Sandy is the big storm surge, the storm itself is a minimal hurricane & will be barely a cat 1 when it hits. Unless youre on the barrier islands or in flood prone area things won’t be Armageddon like the media is trying to make it

Those workers should pack food and water and some clothes, blankets, etc. they don't know when they will get home. My husband left this morning, he is essential personnel, with a bag packed, like I'm sure they all will.

Do they know its a state of Emergency?? To ask a minimum wage worker to risk their lives to get out to work at wawa is just plain stupid... Sorry but If I had a son or daughter that worked there I wouldn't want them to go ... I have a very strong work ethic, but Obeying the law ( no one out unless Emergency essential ) & being safe comes before someone's cup of coffee... If Corp wants it open let them go run the stores...

Perhaps your wife should go get another job. Either that or STOP WHINING!

Most of the community is thankful that a few stores are open.

You people are such babies! Romney would say, if they agree to work for their wages, they should do the state a good deed n provide sandwiches for the people. Or like Obama would say, let if you pork rind, they will cOme! Hey black mamba, there are 6 of us going at noon with protest signs and a big rat. We are protesting the we want the 4.79 classic back , like they did in august. Can you meet us at the one on lanes mill?
