Water Spout Postpones Shore Acres Yacht Club Regatta, Sends One to Hospital
Water spout cancels planned regatta race, causes leg injury at Shore Acres Yacht Club
An unexpected water spout in the vicinity of Drum Point Road's Shore Acres Yacht Club in Brick this morning put a stop to a planned regatta event and sent one young man to the hospital with a leg injury.
A water spout, which some say is like a tornado on the water, came through and turned over some cat boats. One was taken off its trailer, said Shore Acres Yacht Club Vice-Commodore Bob Goodyear.
“This happened at about 11:15 or 11:30 this morning. We had our Shore Acres Hobie Regatta scheduled, and we were getting ready to launch. We had three committee boats already in the water. I was on one of them,” said Goodyear.
Goodyear explained that no one in the boats was hurt, but a young man at the club did suffer a leg injury and was taken to a local hospital by Brick Township EMT’s.
Additionally, the regatta has been canceled for the day.
“It’s too windy to race out there. It was pretty intense. Some RV’s here were lifted off the ground. We had broken glass and some other good stuff. Apart from the young man with the leg injury, no one else was hurt,” said Goodyear.

That must be the reason why there were rigs heading down Drum Point with lights and sirens! Thankfully not many Hobies were in the water yet.

Good point Cate - People need to respect the weather - it is way more powerful than anyone who thinks that they are invincible - I hope the young injured person makes a full recovery but this event should have been cancelled way in advance of todays' onslaught of foul weather. I've had my stuff tied down for 2 days because of the forecasted storms. This waterspout developed just 2 blocks or so from where I live. Not for nothing but Preparation = Salvation - Not a religious comment I'm just saying if you pay attention to the elements and your surroundings there is a strong possibility that you will come through unscathed .... IMHO

Why must there always be someone who comes from the (insert natural disaster here) capitol of the universe expressly to tell us, "Aww, that's nothing! Where I come from, we would laugh at a (insert natural disaster here) this small!", just like with the earthquake last year.
Sorry, I am used to my disasters being of the man-made variety. When the weather attempts to smite us, I'm sorry, I'm running in the opposite direction.

I live walking distance from here. I did not know, I heard about a storm on wed. Into thurs. Actually in the paper due to all the pics that have been posted online the weather info center heard and now they are investigating this water spout! Appentenly these spouts aren't seen much.
I hope this young man comes to full recovery!

I was in Brooklyn close to the Canarsie area. I heard what I thought was the neighbor bringing a trash can to the back of the house. When it went on for longer than that would take I decided it was thunder, the longest thunder I had ever experienced.
My son and his wife have a cabana at Breezy. Their cabana was untouched but the string of cabanas attached behind them were torn apart.
If you view a map you will see this is the end of a Peninsula and is a Barrier island. There are million dollar homes that started out as modest bungalows many years ago. Thank God no one was hurt.
