Man Who Jumped Off Point Boro Bridge Charged

Brick responders participated in response

A Wall man who jumped off the Route 88 bridge has been charged with swimming in the Point Pleasant Canal and disorderly conduct, police said Monday.

Devon R. Kuehnen, 34, of the Allenwood section of Wall, suffered only a minor laceration to his nose after jumping from the bridge late Friday night, setting off a massive manhunt that lasted more than two hours, police said.

Police, divers, first aid and fire department volunteers searched the canal and surrounding areas before finding Kuehnen safe on a canal bank early Saturday morning, police said.

He was charged and released on a summons. Swimming in the canal is prohibited by borough ordinance.

A bridge tender called the police at 11:48 p.m. Friday, saying a man had jumped from the bridge, prompting police to call in multiple emergency responders from Point Beach, Point Boro and Brick to help with the search.

Point Pleasant Borough Fire Company Station 75 and their scuba dive team, the Brick Township Fire Department, the Point Boro First Aid Squad, and the Coast Guard’s Manasquan Station in Point Pleasant Beach all responded to the scene, police said.

The Coast Guard dispatched boats and a helicopter from Air Station Atlantic City to assist in a search and rescue mission.

“The man who jumped from the bridge was later found, not injured or harmed, at 2:06 a.m. on the canal bank,” said Lt. Michael Colwell.

The scene was cleared at approximately 2:32 a.m., Colwell said.

The lead investigator was Borough Officer Siveen Greenan.

Shouldn't he be charged with more than that? What about the cost of all of the emergency personnel/vehicles that responded? Disturbing the peace and trespassing maybe should be added? I hope he's been brought to a crisis center for evaluation as well, before he tries this again on a higher bridge.

-rainbow- I agrea it wasn't a teenager or even early 20's person at 34 years old you should fully understand how seriously dangerous that is and the repercussions that follow should deffenitly include a bill for the rescue efforts. The tax payers should not have to bare it

why even bother w/ the rescue efforts...if people want to kill themselves, they should be allowed to do so. let the guy jump, finish his task and let the crabs finish the job plain and simple. As for paying back the funds to finance the search,LOL, you think this guy has that kind of money, what do you want, to garnish his wages for the next 100years? maybe apss it along to the kids if he has any?

Not to kick off a whole debate over this but more people butt in,stick their nose in where it doesn't belong or concern themselves w/ saving people from killing themselves, but when it comes to allowing an abortion to take place many see no wrong w/killing an innocent being. There's bigger fish to fry in this world,if a person wants to off themself, then so be it, Life, liberty and persuit of happiness,we're suppose to be free to make our own decisions, except when others don't like the decision, then it becomes someone elses business. If someone wants to step in front of a train, jump off a bridge, jump out of a plane w/o a parachute then I say have at it buddy,it's not the fall that's gonna do it,bit's the sudden stop.

Hey ken Murphy...how much did this horses behind cost me. Not to mention the volunteers time and safety when they entered the water to save him. If you are not a victim then they should let this guy fend for himself in the water. If he jumped on his own, leave him on his own.

Yes, I indeed asked if he has been brought to a crisis center for evaluation. THROUGH, not "threw". He must be going THROUGH a tough time. He THREW himself off the bridge. Any way you spell it, it's a sad story.

given the time of the 911 call 11:38 pm and how close the shore house bar and grill is to that bridge is less than 100 feet. anyone else think he was just drunk and decided to jump for fun and not suicide what he did was WRONG i understand that he caused a public emergency response panic etc. and that i believe he should be penalized for it absolutely i just wanted to add a twist on what might have caused him to do it. on a side note credit for all emergency personal that responded thank you for what you do.

I agree with a lot of the comments about this person wasting emergency resources, but has anyone considered this person to be sick? Whether he IS an alcoholic as alluded to, or simply mentally ill, why kick him while he is down? Before anyone responds as if I knew this guy, I didn't, but I do have empathy for somone who is sick. Would you be so critical of a diabetic whose blood sugar went low and wandered around in the street causing traffic backups? Just think about it - anyone could end up in a similar situation.

@clarence that's a valid point i'm just trying to give police the benefit of the doubt that they didn't see a suicidal man and "kick him while he was down" by arresting him. if he really was "sick" than i hope he gets the help he deserves and doesn't end up in a prison. if he did it for thrills or because of alcohol than he deserves to be arrested. like i said i personally am going off the assumption and trying to give the police the benefit of the doubt they didn't see an upset crying man on a canal and put him in handcuffs.

HE WAS NOT TRYING TO KILL HIMSELF. he is just an idiot PLAIN AND SIMPLE! he was jumping because someone else did it a month prior so he wanted to also. he tried to get out of the water immediately but a boat with fishermen was blocking the ladder so the current took him to the next one where he got out.
