Two Dead in Overnight Adamston Road Accident

Two Brick residents died late Sunday night in a single vehicle crash along Adamston Road in which a bicyclist was struck and injured.

The 11:55 p.m. accident claimed the lives of William R. Romanow, 23, and his passenger, Nicolas S. Lascala, 24, Brick police confirmed.

Romanow was travelling westbound on Adamston Road approaching the intersection of Whitethorn Court when he lost control of his 2000 Honda Civic, crossing over the double yellow line and eventually striking a man on a bicycle, according to Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian.

After the collision with the bicycle, the Honda struck a curb on the south side of the roadway, causing it to go airborne and its roof to strike a tree, Bedrosian said.

The force of the impact caused the front end of the vehicle to separate from the passenger compartment, according to an accident report. The front end of the vehicle came to rest in the westbound lane of travel while the passenger compartment came to rest upon striking the tree.

Both men who had been riding in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene by the Ocean County Medical Examiner, Bedrosian said. The bicyclist, identified as Kyle Conroy, 23, of Lanoka Harbor, was taken to Jersey Shore Unviersity Medical Center, Neptune, where he was treated for a leg injury and released.

Bedrosian, who is investigating the crash, said its exact cause has not been determined, though "excessive speed appears to be a factor."

The accident caused the closure of Adamston Road for about four hours. Officers James Iannarone and John Rotondo were the first to arrive on scene, said Bedrosian.

Brick police were assisted by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigative Unit, Detective Michael Proto of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, as well as Pioneer Hose and Breton Woods fire companies. Brick Police EMS and MONOC paramedics also responded.
