Traders Cove 'Splash Park' Sparks Discussion

Splash park area will now be a grassy, picnic area

When the township council voted in January to rescind a vote on a $600,000 contract award to build a splash park at the Traders Cove Marina site, plans to construct bathrooms and a playground for disabled children also were cancelled since they were part of the bid.

But township officials are now planning to reinstate plans to build the bathrooms and the playground area with grant funding, and two residents at a meeting on Tuesday called for a reconsideration of the splash park idea.

"Maybe the water park there would've been a better thing," said Dominick Rappoccio, who serves on the township planning board, after hearing the plans for the area that would've been the splash park location.

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said at the meeting that the location where the splash park would've gone will be a grassy area which might contain picnic tables or barbecue grills.

"The fact that it's a grassy area means it's not going to produce income," said Rappoccio.

Township officials were hoping that users fees generated by the splash park, along with bigger ticket items such as boat slips and transient docking, would help the site become a money-maker for the township.

Township resident Bill Wright, who also came to the meeting, suggested partnering with a private firm to build a splash park at the site and sharing in the revenue.

But Council President John Ducey, citing "hard financial times," defended the council's vote against the splash park contract, saying it was what is best for the township's financial picture. Ducey also said there were concerns over traffic congestion if a splash park was added to the park site.

Councilman Jim Fozman said officials are actively pursuing a $1.2 million grant that will provide for bathrooms and showers so the site can offer transient docking services. He also said the council is looking to reinstate the playground area that will be designed with disabled children in mind.

"Things happen, sometimes, in phases," Fozman said. "We're trying to get $1.2 million in grant money in the fall for the rest of Traders Cove, and it won't cost the taxpayers money."

I am dumfounded Vera’s councilmen Jimmy stated that they are looking to get a grant to install lavs 1.2Mil, when will the project be completed? If Vera’s councilmen Jimmy and the other geniuses on council didn’t squashed the previous plans with out reading the fine print that had previsions for the insulation of lavs Jimmy and the other geniuses on council would not be scrambling to cover their butts, and complete the project to required code!

I have read Mrs. Fozmam's posting here in the Patch and it seems that there just may be a co-councilmen position in Brick that we didn't vote for! Obsessions no just want to shake up the tree a bit and let others take note of this issue.

A decent and updated playground is needed on that side of town. Keep the playground and put in bathrooms.

Why why why does the gov't think it can actually make money by running business? Anyhting run by a gov't agency BLEEDS mone--it is a well documented fact.
I'll take a patch of grass that costs nothing to maintain rather than some "water park" that will end up costing us $200,000 a year to maintain in a few years.

It will be another nice place for the "out of towners" to enjoy like Windward Beach.

I have 2 young children and I'm not for the splash park. First off I have an issue of double paying for ANYTHING in this town. If the spashpark was a go my taxes would go up to build and maintain it and then we have to pay to use it. Somehow this town would figure out a way to give free passes to people down here on their vacations like they do the free beach passes for senior citizens from ANYWHERE. Yes our Township gives FREE beach badges to seniors no matter where they live.

Agree! I'm sure they would also need to put more traffic lights (with cameras) on Mantoloking Road when the traffic flow increases to an even higher level than it already is.

$600,000 for Splash Park and lavs vs. $1.2 mil for playground and lavs? What am I missing here?
Oh, the picnic area for Canada geese!

Noticed a liquor license possibly up for sale. Price around $600,000. And lo and behold cost od Waterpark around $600,000. In other words a splash of booze could finance a splash of fun. Hmmm!

I had to laugh when I read this article about the "Splash Park." Here are some observations for the Brick Mayor and Council.

The township takes State “green acres” money to buy a commercial marina to turn it into a public marina, in lieu of an opportunity to have the site redeveloped with a tax basis in the tens of millions of dollars. By using green acres money the township can never as a practical matter use the land for anything other than a park, even though it will be used as a working marina in competition with other local marinas.

The township routinely signs off on public employee contracts that guarantee wage, benefit, and retirement benefits not available to the vast majority of those employed in the private sector.

The economy goes South but the marina improvements and the public employee contracts need to be paid for, along with all other municipal expenses.

The township “leadership” then asks the voters to INCREASE municipal taxes by 24% while their property values are DECREASING. The referendum passed by a few hundred votes from those motivated by fear, with only one third of those qualified actually voting.

Now you spend your time trying to make the new public marina a “money maker.”

Did you run for office to serve the public or to serve your egos? Please tell me this is all a joke so I can pay the tab for the comedy act and return to the land of reality.

SInce the section of the Park area that is almost completed and paid with COUNTY money not local - are the parking space's on County land or Municipal land ? If it is County land will parking be free or will the Township enforce the municipal parking fee's on all user's?

Why does everyone need to complain about everything?! Can't we all just let the anger go for a change and just be happy with the fact that a run down, hideous looking piece of land is turning into a beautiful water front property?
As for the grassy picnic area...my opinion is that grass requires fertilizer so unless they plan on using organic products...I would suggest avoiding grass.

I liked it as a run down, hideous looking piece of land. On Saturday morning Charlie and I would be the first ones there, him with a beer and me with a coffee, we'd light our Marlboro cigarettes and toss in our crab nets -- Charlie in the corner and me by the four-posted fence. The stink of rotting fish, the smell of the salted air, the flies and glorious sunrises is what made Trader's Cove a crabberman's wonderland. I'll miss the old place!

The Acropolis administration put more than $17.3 million into Traders Cove. Green Acres returned $5.4 million so far. The Brick taxpayers picked up $12.9 million for something that originally was only going to cost $700,000!

I really would like to know when the county side of Trader’s Cove will be opened; it seems to be complete it just sits there closed? Even though I know that it will be difficult to use it due to the fact if the same people overrun it as in the past I don’t think I will be bringing the family!

If's it's a County park, everybody can use it. People from all over will be there. Just like Summerfest.. Get there early, then you'll get a parking space. Who cares who uses it. It's a free world.. Thank God. There will be enough people there, I don't think anyone will be missed.

Bring on the splash park. A marina with unique amenties like a splash park and fishing area would be welcomed. There are a plenty of picnic grass areas for geese already in the area. A revenue generating splash park that would benefit our children and be handicap accessible is fantastic. The splash park would also be a draw for people to park their boat there and in return generate the town more revenue in marina fees.

Well you could take your kids to Windward, pay $5 a head and then watch them get stung by jellyfish all day while wading in the nastiest water in NJ. Or you could wait in traffic for a little bit, take them to a water spray park where they will have fun and not get stung and the water would be filtered and clean.

SO many levels of frustration here but for the love of GOD - NO GRASS ON THE BAYFRONT!! Aside from the myriad other (and all equally valid) reasons, there will be goose shit everywhere. Can we get ANYone with a clue and a pair in there to make some decisions that make some sense? I mean, I can see it now. PNC Bank Buy Rite Goose Poo Park. 9 rows of handicapped parking, no smoking, rule signs everywhere and a pergola to snag your fishing lines on. In 6 months the bathrooms will be locked 23 hours a day and you'll have to cart out your own garbage! Boat owners only on the docks (for liability reasons), curb your kids, and don't be mean to the geese!

Ask our Parks Superintendent Mr.Francese who came up with the grass concept idea ? I would say him or the Mayor but they will place it on the Engineer.
Why not sand and small area's of plume grass it would concide with the Marina theme
along the water.

My neighbors kid calls them Penquin People because of their manner of dress. I've only had experience with them at Windward and I have found them to be polite and to pretty much keep to themselves, they don't take up a lot of parking spaces as they usually come with 20 kids in one car. I do have one bitch with them though and that is changing their kids diapers on the picnic tables or the park benches with nothing underneath the kids, GROSS, especially for the next group of people that sit down at that bench or table. Other than that, I don't have a problem with them and I too go down there after hours as I WILL NOT PAY $5 to get on Windward either!

Everyday I pass by I see groups of guys standing around and doing basically nothing, they whole thing is a scam, from the politically connected engineer, architect, and the corrupt general contractor. Money pit for the PIGS to FATTEN themselves on the taxpayers dime, some things never change. THE PIGS CONTINUE TO FEED FROM THE TROUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe we can get James Lacy, the Head of BTMUA to run the splash park, he's over qualified, remember he's always been fascinated with water, that was his statement upon getting handed the MUA position, I'm sure he could use another tax payer funded job here in Brick. Director of Splash Park Operations, that's worth at least 100k per year. These guys are unbelievable.
