Township Hopes Traders Cove Mud Will Turn to Cash
Traders Cove fill may turn into cash for township
As work to turn the former Traders Cove Marina site into a park continues, the township is expecting to generate revenue from excess fill from the site.
The township council is expected to approve a resolution at its meeting Tuesday authorizing the sale of dredge material and mulch that was moved to the township recycling center on Ridge Road from the marina site.
In March, the fill that had been laid down was removed in favor of soil more sandy in nature that was given to the township free of charge from a construction project at Ocean County College.
The OCC soil will help with drainage at the Traders Cove site and be a better fit for the property, mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said at the time.
The original fill material – mostly mud dredged from Lake of the Lillies in Point Pleasant Beach last year – was moved to the Ridge Road facility, where much of it was used to shore up the police firing range, which needs a dirt backing to help avoid ricochets.
The remaining soil, if the resolution authorizing its sale passes muster with the council, will be sold.
"Some people are interested in that, so we have to a bidding process," said Council President John Ducey.
Potential bidders have approached the township in hopes of purchasing the fill.
Meanwhile, the township is expecting another $2.4 million in state grant funding for the overall Traders Cove project.
Councilman Jim Fozman said at a recent council meeting that the funding will allow the township to install permanent restrooms at the site and complete some of the final steps for the site to open as a park.
Township officials also have said the funding may allow for the reinstatement of a play area for special needs children at the park. That part of the project was put on hold earlier this year when the council reconsidered certain aspects of the project, including a planned splash park, the inclusion of which was canceled.

The Acropolis Escapades Continues - How could the county complete their part of the project but we still have mud ? Is the parking lot under Township rule or goverened under the County ?

There has been talk of an upgraded outdoor range being included in the next capital budget. We had a story on it a while back. We'll give an update when we hear something.

I am still very sad that a splash park will not be going in. I just keep hoping that I am understanding it wrong. I think that this town is very sad when it comes to parks. The current ones we have are not being taken care of, plans of future parks get turned down, its sad.

The current parks are rarely used... empty for that matter...
except Drum Point which is sports.
The best park perse in Brick... is the Reservoir... and that is maintained by BTMUA!!!

You may need to build a school on the site to get any money for park improvements.
This Administration has no set plan. Look at the Township property on RT.70 (aka:Fooftown site) the only thing it is used for today is for a Parade startup site, Construction Vehicles and Political Motivated Signs during a campaign. It's time to make this site into a passive Recreation SIte to allow fishing, kayaking and walking trails along with a picnic area. Does this fall under Planning or Mr.Bealu's over worked schedule?

Why do you all hate Traders Cove so much? I'm for it! Anything that preserves a place that the residence of Brick can go for a little water fun and sun is fine. Year by year, lot by lot water front property is being sold off to the point that there will be no place for the little guy in Brick to go. That's not what I call shore living and it's getting harder in this town to experience shore living if your not a millionaire. The same thing with the Foodtown property, turn it into a nature park with canoing, fishing, swimming. You may not appreciate it now, but future generations will!

Speaking of the Foodtown site, if I can remember correctly, the original bid specs called for a Hotel and Banquet center. At the LAST minute, Jack Morris of Edgewood added the Hotel and Banquet center which had been freely and completely submitted by TWO other bidders. Edgewood (now M&M developers) has turned the whole thing around to their original bid so that they can get maximum bucks and screw (Pardon the language) the town out of a Hotel and needed Banquet facility. Look for the two well financed other original bidders to come back with a lawsuit. I’d love to see that.

When the bridge is up the traffic is at a stand still, so what's a couple of minutes more? They use Mantoloking Road for Seaside and Point Pleasnat in the summer it's always backed up for miles. Waited in it myself. No big deal. Use another road, it's as simple as that.

Went to the County Park to relax, I noticed alot of boats waiting to launch at Trader's Cove. Do you pay at the office there or get a season pass? I have alot of friends with boats and they are interested.

I found out it's free to launch your boats. Walked the whole boardwalk today. On Trader"s Cove side at the end of the walkway, I stopped to watch an egret. What a beautiful bird. A man was crabbing and it was a very relaxed walk. Ocean County side is just as nice. Lots of covered places to sit, emaculate bathrooms well kept. Walked under the bridge to the other deck. More people crabbing or fishing. What a perfect place for the parks. Thank you Mayor Acropolis, it's worth every penny of whatever it costs me.......God's area.

The adminastration cost this town hundreds of thousands of dollars in soil removal and having to get soil from the college paying the county for for trucks, wages. The mayor gave the OK to put in the foundation for the splash park,and the under ground piping for the drains and water suppy.When the council voted it down.
