Toms River Man Injured in Brick Blvd. Crash
Crash during lane change sends man to hospital
A Toms River man was injured after being involved in a motor vehicle accident with a Brick man on Brick Blvd. Tuesday morning at approximately 10:51 a.m., police said.
John Coviello, 37, of Toms River, was traveling southbound on Brick Boulevard in his 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, proceeding into the intersection with Cedar Bridge Avenue, when a 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by Colin Hartigan, 20, of Brick, struck his vehicle, according to Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian.
Hartigan was traveling southbound in the center lane and was attempting to change to the left lane, where Coviello was traveling, when the crash occurred. The crash caused Coviello to lose control of his vehicle and strike the center concrete median, located on the south side of the intersection. Striking the median caused the vehicle to roll over, said Bedrosian.
Coviello's Equinox came to a final rest on its right side approximately 60 feet past the intersection in the left southbound lane, Bedrosian said. The overhead traffic light pole, located on the southbound median, was also struck by the Equinox and came down into the roadway as a result of the crash.
Coviello was transported to Ocean Medical Center for further treatment of his injuries, which were described by police as leg pain and a minor arm burn due to air bag deployment. Hartigan was not injured.
The Ocean County Road Department responded to repair the downed traffic light pole, though the function of the traffic signal at the intersection was unaffected by the crash, Bedrosian said.
Brick Police officers Louis Valanzola, Candace Lambert, Mark Storch and Glenn Turner were the initial responding officers to the scene. Valanzola is continuing the investigation. Hartigan was issued a summons for careless driving at the scene.
Both the Pioneer Hose and Breton Woods Fire Companies were called to the scene for leaking vehicle fluids and to assist police. Brick Police EMS also responded.

Brick roads are becoming increasingly hazardous. Too much congestion and too much texting, and cell phoning are adding to the problem. If you want to talk on the phone STAY HOME IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!

I don't see anything about talking and texting in the story, Nothing wrong with any roads in Brick or anywhere else, Just filled with people that can't drive for crap like all those old bags around route 37 day after day.

The 20-year-old caused the accident, the cops said. Odds are he was texting or talking -- because a majority of 20-year-olds do that regularly while driving. It's time to enforce the law or add more points and fines to such violations.

"Odds are?" How about we wait for some facts rather than speculate? Sure, younger drivers are no saints when it comes to texting/talking on a cell while driving but check out some of the statistics from Pew Research and you'll find that adults are just as, if not more guilty, of texting/talking while driving. I do agree with the notion that the law needs to be upheld and more serious penalties doled out to offenders.

We should never jump to a conclusion on what the cause is until we actually hear what the cause is. A person changing lanes without realizing someone is in the other lane is not exactly a new phenomenon that is caused only by distracted drivers. It definitely is careless, no doubt.

Randal, phones are put away before the time when police are able to report to the scene. Believe me there is a lot of it going on behind the wheel or not. The roads here are great until you need to make a left hand turn. Crap Drivers and crap roads built for 1960's traffic.

I have actually become scared to drive here. Between the texting and talking and the seniors who need to be retested. I hope the whole country bans texting and talking on the phone. And by the way, get the illegals off the roads too.

Along with taking the illegals off the road which shouldn't be to hard to do since they all have PA plates. Take the black hat people from Lakewood off the road too. They are the worst of any drivers.

Excuse me. I know that 20 year old personally. He was not texting or talking on his cell phone because he does not OWN a cell phone. The dick head 37 year old was SPEEDING. Colin was not injured. His car was grazed. So tell me this, how fast does a car need to be going in order to flip after GRAZING a car? Hmm? Don't believe everything you read in the news people. The cops are obviously morons who want to put the blame on the younger person to make us all look bad.

clearly you were there to know that the man was speeding right? the article says that your friend hit him, after attempting to switch lanes. MAYBE your friend did not see him and the car he hit was not in his peripherall view. it happens all the time. i imagine the "moron" cops summized what happend from what the parties in the accident gave in their statements. I agree with Shore Skeptic.

Come on...we are all guilty of "being distracted" no matter what age you are! Yes, I agree that most texting is done by younger people, but we should not jump to a conclusion. Yes, and some elder people should not be behind the wheel either. All of use just need to pay more attention and be PATIENT!

It should be automatic for cops to check drivers' phone call logs after an accident. Then prosecute. If there's no record of texting or calling, no problem.

I understand the intent, but that would violate the 4th amendment. Police would need probable cause to check the phone records of people and simply being in an accident wouldn't be enough to check everyone.

I think that is an excellent idea that makes so much sense it is doubltful it could ever be instituted as nothing today seems to make any sense at all.

not anymore wherestheballot..^..after the patriot act, sadly authorities can do so much more than you can imagine brother... i'm not for it, but i am well aware of it Trust me.. still need a judge's order to secure a wire tap on a phone.. but can read all you TEXTS (inbox & outbox), read all your Google Searches, read all your Phone's Nav info, recieve all ur incoming call #'s & outgoing calls, and location.. all with no reason at all...
i'm far from happy about this, but just know this is 100% true and the way it is.. also can work with onstar to constantly track your vehicle's location without a warrant..but with one it can turn on the audio inside a vehicle that has active onstar... SADLY u would think if ur doin nothin wrong, then u have nothin to worry about.. NOT SOO TRUE MY FRIENDS: after doing google searching for flights to florida few days later i began recieveing numerous emails from airliners with discounts to florida.. this info is goin to b used.... abused more commercially than we can ever imagine

I understand what the Patriot Act allows, but that doesn't make it Constitutional. Congress does not have the right to just arbitrarily change the Bill of Rights through a simple majority vote. The way this country is today, a challenge to it would never succeed, but if a state law were passed requiring the inspection phone records after an accident, it would stand a chance of being overturned since it not in the name of security.
BTW Rick - Your experience with searching for flights is not something with the government tracking your activities. Its actually a fairly common practice for many sites to use the same tracking service and sharing the browsing habits of people. Just turn off cookies and Java Script in your browser and they will be very limited in what they will know about you.
