Toms River Home Burglarized, Owner’s Dog and Possessions Stolen

Resident loses 11-week old puppy along with possessions in burglary

Update, May 23: Puppy Now Found http://patch.com/A-t17j

A Toms River residence was broken into on Friday morning, but the thieves walked off with more than just worldly goods — they took the homeowner’s pet dog, as well.

Mary Frances Yurkel of Toms River described that her mother, who resides behind Shop Rite in the vicinity of Fischer Boulevard and Bay Avenue, was the victim of a burglary yesterday morning.

“These people kicked in the front door, took all of her jewelry, a laptop, a firebox with all of the family's historical and pertinent information, and Fiona, an 11-week old Havanese mix (dog),” said Yurkel.

Yurkel described Fiona as having a white body, black ears, one black eye, and a black nose.

“My mother is losing faith as time passes. My sisters and I are pounding the pavement, asking everyone in the area (for information),” Yurkel explained.

The family is also offering a $500 reward for the safe return of the 11-week-old puppy.

If you have any information on this theft, or if you have seen Fiona, please contact your local police department or 609-994-4722.

It is due to the economy and Obama owns it right now. We're in the security industry and crime soared in this town about a year and a half ago (give or take a bit). That's a set in stone fact.
This is because people are out of work and they resort to deviant behavior to get their fix, whether it's money for food or drugs.
There are two guys in that very neighborhood knocking on doors asking if anyone needs a handyman. They knock after dark and they don't look like "handymen". They look like thugs.

Getting a gun is only useful if you're home and you keep it on your person. The NJ gun laws are so restrictive you're going to end up in jail if you protect yourself. Look them up if you don't believe me.

This is just like it was during Jimmy Carter's presidency. Times were tough. Prices of things kept going up while jobs disappeared. Crime went through the roof. It took 10 years to dig out of that mess. People were stealing dogs then too. Why dogs? Because they sell them ( and I'm sorry if this upsets the homeowner, but it's reality) to medical labs. It was rampant then. You used to be able to go out with your dog and tie him up to go inside a store and find him there when you get out. That stopped. Do you see people going shopping and tying dogs anymore? Dogs were stolen from houses, yards and anyplace they can snag them from.

I hope the little dog is OK and only ran outside and is found hiding under a porch or something.

And I do hope this pup was microchipped and registered. This way of someone does try to bring it to a vet or a shelter, the chances are greater that the pup will be fond and returned.

"Those scumbags." "Those druggies." "Just trying to get their next fix." Given the option of having a career these PEOPLE, would not choose this life. Am I saying these people are some kind of saints? No. I'm saying that crime is harder than any job in the US, because it never stops for them. They constantly have to keep one eye open, day or night, and they might not even have a roof over their head. That doesn't make it right, but neither does the extravagant living of so many Americans while just as many if not more are suffering. There are enough empty houses and apartments in the US to house every homeless man woman and child. Why aren't they allowed to live there? Greed. "Oh that's my vacation home, my second home, my spare home" Doesn't matter how you put it, it's just as wrong as this burglary.

Yeah the poor dog, but I feel just as bad for the people who've had to stoop to this.

Let me tell you something, life is not always fair. You make the best of it, but you don't resort to crime no matter what.

Making a living and doing well is NOT as much of a CRIME as being a thug, no matter what warped world you live in.

And an option of having a career? Well they chose the "career" of being a low life thug, not finding a job and doing the right thing. Like I said, we're in the security industry IN THIS TOWN and crime is way up in a very short time. When we gather video and catch these thugs, 99% of them are pill-heads, not poor unfortunate people who just need a break.

Mot Revir - I get those "statistics" by the number of calls to the call centers hooked into our systems for the crimes in this town. I'm not stating a national average. Which, by the way, are you really going to put your faith in what any government agency claims?

Sales of alarm and camera systems are up for all the companies working this area. FACT. Do your own research and stop depending on some federal agencies nationally padded stats.

If you read this site on a regular basis, you will know local thugs are breaking in almost every day. I don't think that's a "down turn" in crime.

I'm not blaming the president. You have a comprehension problem. I said crime goes up when the economy tanks. This is Obama's economy. He can blame it on anyone he likes, but after 4 years he owns it. He hasn't done much about it. I used Jimmy Carter's presidency as the only other example I am capable of saying as fact because I lived through that disaster and remember quite well how bad things got. At least Jimmy Carter had the nuts to say things were bad and he wasn't having an easy time making things better. Obama just blows smoke up our butts hoping we're all too stupid to know any better.

Now please tell me where I said any other president is blameless?

Mot- where did you get your info? I'd like to take a look at that myself. Your stats seem to be incomplete. If you're talking about the FBI then I assume you're talking nation wide statistics. That certainly does not reflect what's going on here in TR. Also, crime has dropped? Ok. Since when? Last year? 10 yrs ago? The Carter Administration? If you've lived here in TR for any length of time you KNOW that crime, specifically home burglaries, is up. It wasn't long ago that we were ranked in more than one national publication as one of the top ten safest cities (of our size) in the US to live in. Things have changed dramatically. You need only to live here to see that.

http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/new-jersey/

Home > Crime Statistics > New Jersey
New Jersey crime statistics indicate a total downward trend in crime based on data from 10 years when violent crime was decreasing and property crime was decreasing.

Based on this report, the crime rate in New Jersey for 2012 is expected to be lower than in 2009 when the state violent crime rate was lower than the national violent crime rate average by 10.62% and the state property crime rate was lower than the national property crime rate average by 8.54%.

Okay...first off and foremost...sorry to hear about the missing dog...but is the dog more precious than the stolen firebox...if i were the owner...my focus would be more on the contents and deleting accounts and trying to find backups of any important paperwork if possible. Its a terrible thing to have items stolen...but perhaps a more secured house or an alarm system can now be set up...wonder how the other people feel in the neighborhood...its such a bad crime and hopefully there will some type of resolution for everybody involved.

So I made an assumption that you are with a Commercial Security company. Let's see, if it's not the Government and it's not a commercial company that residential customers can subscribe to. If I am incorrect then what company are you with? How do we homeowners secure your services?

Your first problem is you assumed I meant Brinks.
Your second wrong assumption is that the CIA, FBI, DEA and border patrol have anything to do with what I don't trust in government. Neither do they protect your home from burglary.
But hey, you go and get your self monitoring system, have them send a text to your Jitterbug phone and go catch them yourself. I don't care. Oh and please, I am not promoting my company, nor would I. It's not my place to do so here. That would be called SPAMMING.
Do your own homework. Hire your own choice of company and just make sure they install high definition cameras to capture the faces of the idiots who rob you. You won't be calling us. We don't do home systems.

Part I of my reply

SecureEnvelope - you need to comprehend when you read something. When I said "Brinks and the like", my statement was not directed to Brinks alone. "and the like" means all of the other security companies just like Brinks who are managed by the same people over and over again. The call centers of all commercial security companies are manged by ppl who managed the call centers of all of the competing companies. It's like a revolving door in that industry - the employees go in and out of one company to a competitor to another. SecureEnvelope I am 70 years old and have never been a victim of home invasion. There are many many ways to keep your home from being broken in to and all put together they cost less than $100. Lights on timers with each timer programmed for various times of the night. Timers that turn the TV on for daytime noise. Motion detector recordings of barking dogs that turn on when someone approaches your doors or windows, depending on where you put your detector(s). I have 3. Motion detector floodlights in the back and front of my property in trees.

Part II of my reply

SecureEnvelope - The lights look like a landscaping detail when they go on. A Homeowner simply needs to go to Home Depot or Lowes to find the things I mentioned in Parts 1 and II of my reply. Why should I pay a service $25/month, where I don't know a soul, who hire high school drop outs, many with questionable 'records', who turn over in those call center jobs constantly to protect my home? What I recommend for you SecureEnvelope is to do your homework and look up the government agencies I mentioned to see what their mission statements are. As Carolina Shores said, those agencies do indeed protect our homes. Here's a little piece of information for you 'Not So SecureEnvelope'. How many Gas company, cable company and telephone company trucks do you see each day with their uniformed employees shimming up the poles to 'make repairs'? How many of those are really government agencies placing surveillance equipment on those poles and lines? You haven't got a clue 'Not So SecureEvenlope' but I do.

NOW you come on here telling me that all the utility companies are really government spies placing surveillance equipment on our phones and homes?
So which is it? Should I trust the government or not?

I never said, per your post, that “all the utility companies are really government spies placing surveillance equipment on our phones and homes?”. I said the agencies use those utility companies, in partnership with those utilities, to place survielliance equipment in every town across this country where needed and when needed. Yes ‘Not So Secure Envelope’ it happens every day somewhere across this country. You don’t think that is, at some level, protecting us locally? Your ability to see the big picture is so limited friend. You don’t know who you are talking with ‘Not So SecureEnvelope’ b/c if you did you would be tucking your tail under, red faced and walking away from this conversation. Funny thing is ‘Not So SecureEnvelope’ I know EXACTLY who you are and that’s why I can snicker at your increasingly aggravated posts. Have a wonderful day at work tomorrow. Not so secure eh? Tata.

Part two to ellen:

If this is a veiled threat of YOU figuring out who I am, where I live or anything of the like, I suggest you forget it.

If you think government agencies spying on people in the way you suggest, are protecting us, YOU ARE INSANE. That my friend is called illegal wire tapping and it is indeed illegal, even within the confines of the patriot act.

YOU can trust the government all you want. YOU apparently do not understand the constitution as it is written. It is NOT federal government's job to spy on citizens under the guise of protection.

And you most certainly did NOT say the utilities work in concert with the government. You said:

"Here's a little piece of information for you 'Not So SecureEnvelope'. How many Gas company, cable company and telephone company trucks do you see each day with their uniformed employees shimming up the poles to 'make repairs'? How many of those are really government agencies placing surveillance equipment on those poles and lines? You haven't got a clue 'Not So SecureEvenlope' but I do."

Now that sounds like paranoia to me.
But again, you can feel secure that the CIA and other Federal agencies have your back via back door spying on your home. Yeah, that's protection. Have a nice life.

Oh and one more thing....
"You don’t know who you are talking with ‘Not So SecureEnvelope’ b/c if you did you would be tucking your tail under, red faced and walking away from this conversation. Funny thing is ‘Not So SecureEnvelope’ I know EXACTLY who you are and that’s why I can snicker at your increasingly aggravated posts. "

1) I am not aggravated. I am trying to have a civil debate. But you can't be civil - you feel the need to name call. Very mature.
2) I don't give a fig who you are. Your threat of "power" does not scare me. If you want to contact me personally and make me run tuck-tailed because you're so "bad", feel free to hit my personal area on this board and I'll meet up with you. I could use a good laugh.
3) There's about 250 people mocking you right now on my website. You're a hoot!

This has been an interesting blog to follow, considering it started with a stolen pup. You seem beat up upon Secureenvelope. However I must say that Ellen is correct. The government and utilities do work together when there is reason for surveillance as my son works for one of the agencies and he has done this many times. I, for one, don't look at what they are doing as an invasion of privacy and I agree with the lady who said it does protect us at some level.

JMO...BUT now that the puppy has been found the editor can close this article as it is just clogging up my emails with all this nonsence of Securevelope and Ellen.
Wow talk about going off on a tangent!
93 comments on this and only 15 are about the lady loosing her dog and getting it back. Really?
There should be a button to Stop getting "posts" about an article when when you wan, just like the one to "keep me posted".
You people need a hobbie other than reading and posting to The Patch!!!

RedonRed, ever since they revamped the Patch comments section a few weeks back it's almost impossible to stop those "noreply" email notifications. Unclicking everything to do with notifications in your profile or clicking "stop following" just above the comments under an article, did NOT stop those emails for me.
Finally, I just emailed " help@patch.com " and asked them to please stop ALL email notices from the Patch site.
All or Nothing -- Seems to be the only thing that works.

I would hope they get caught and someone finally throws away the key. These AH need to be stopped. It's disgusting what's going on around here. These kids need to get jobs and stop stealing from those of us that gi to work everyday. I pray they catch them quickly and return the pup. My prayers go out to the grieving family.

Mary Frances Yurkel confirmed last night the puppy, Fiona, has been found and is now home. She is hopeful the remaining stolen possessions could turn up as part of an ongoing police investigation.

All security firms are a bunch of scumbags. They are lower than the thieves. They send people out to vandalize and break in to homes so they can sell their useless crap. Get rid of them and a large portion of the crime in any town would disappear.

You better have rock solid proof of such an accusation. By that comment alone, you call me and our company thieves and criminals. It's very bold of you to make such a comment anonymously on an internet board, but try saying it to our (as in the entire security industry) faces. You wouldn't.
I don't even need to list names, just walk into any company office and spout off like the imbecile you are. Houses that have alarms are rarely robbed.

Cody,
Not all security firms are bad. Not all cops are bad, not all teachers are bad, not all politicians are bad hmmmm (not sure about that), not all people are bad.

Some security firms are fly-by-nights. Security industry was downgraded when companies like Dictograph (not dictaphone) opened their doors and every installer in the industry wanted to open their own company. If you want a first class AAA ul system circa 1970 and earlier, you couldn't afford it. You get what you pay for.
Let the buyer beware

I have always suspected that. There are other ways to secure your property more safely than buying into one of those never ending monthly services. You can buy fake signs and post them outside of your house and then install your own private network.

Mattie, a lot is not working for you here it seems. Did you see my comments to you in your personal area? All those posts you made and they still are not there last time I checked that thread. I got updates via email but your words are not there.
Unsubscribing is working for me. Apparently the new software Patch is using has a lot of bugs in it.

Secure, yes I saw your posts in my profile area. And when I replied back to them in your profile area, it went into pending and never came out! Twice!! They are still sitting in there on YOUR board saying "Pending" and not posted. I can't even delete them and forget about them.
Then I posted to you in MY profile area, that worked, no problem, so you can see my answer to you there.....
Yeah, a lot of bugs. Apparently they aren't using very sophisticated software, nor have the techs available to upgrade and fix as they go along. :: shrugs::
