Spending cuts of $56.7 billion for defense “would result in the loss of 325,693 direct jobs, including 48,147 civilian DoD employees,” the report said. A loss of $59 billion for non-Defense agencies could cost 420,529 jobs — with an estimated 229,116 jobs, or 54.5 percent of these direct job losses, consisting of federal workers.

DETROIT, May 4 (UPI) -- A spokesman for U.S. automaker General Motors said the company paid no federal income tax for 2011 despite earnings of $13 billion since 2009.

"We did not pay federal income tax last year," said GM spokesman Jim Cain.

The Detroit News reported Friday GM earned profits of $1 billion in January through March but may not have a federal tax bill to pay "for many more years."

The tax-free years are the result of GM's stint in bankruptcy in 2009.

The newspaper reported the Treasury Department gave GM permission to use the $18 billion in losses from the pre-bankruptcy company, the so-called old GM, to cancel out any profits it has made since it emerged from bankruptcy.

In essence, GM would have to make $1 billion for 18 consecutive quarters before the federal government, which bailed out the company, sees a nickel in income tax from GM.

As for the stock market - who here has seen his or her life improved because of a rise in the stock market. The trading on the stock market is one thing but real life economy is another. Has the rise in the stock market added jobs, lowered the price of gas and utilities, stopped the rise in foreclosures, lowered property taxes? If thousands of shares of Facebook or Apple stock are traded in a day and the stock market spikes, does that mean that the price of milk, or shoes, or electric is going to drop for the family who is making do with 2 or 3 part time jobs because they can't find work?
