Route 88 Crash Claims Life of Brick Man, 50

Crash occurred near Dim Sum restaurant on Tuesday morning

An accident on Route 88 claimed the life of a Brick man Tuesday morning.

Police say Brick resident Earl Sprague, 50, was driving westbound on Route 88 near the intersection of Burnt Bridge Avenue around 7:06 a.m. when he crossed over the center roadway lines into the eastbound lane. At that time, his 2003 Toyota Sienna minivan crashed head-on with a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup being driven by David Griggs, 46, also of Brick, according to Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian.

Sprague received "fatal injuries" in the crash, Bedrosian said, and was pronounced dead at Ocean Medical Center after the accident. Griggs was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for treatment of a broken left arm and facial lacerations. He is in stable condition there, said Bedrosian.

Traffic was detoured around the crash scene for approximately two and one-half hours, Bedrosian said. Brick Township Police officers Mark Beyers, Scott Smith and Mark Alexander were the initial responding officers to the scene. The investigation was handled by officers Jay Lampiasi and Scott Dierking of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit. Assisting at the scene were members of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigation Unit.

Both the Laurelton and Herbertsville Fire Companies were called to the scene for extrication services. The Brick Township Police Department EMS, as well as MONOC paramedics, also responded to the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Bedrosian said.

Any witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact the Brick Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit at 732-262-1140.

Rest Easy Daddy, We all love you dearly and will miss you everyday <3

(Tessy) my dad has been sick for a long time and although the results are not conclusive my father most likely suffered some form of stroke, heart attack, or organ failure and that is the reason for the crash. He was not drunk or on drugs he has been fighting for ten years and God decided to let him rest. Trust me my families number one question was "please tell us nobody else was killed", Sorry to Mr. Griggs and his family that this occurred. But it was still a father to 3 daughters and a 12 year old son that was lost on that road yesterday.
Rest in Peace to my wonderful father <3

Jerry ,
You were the kindest man and gave gave and gave some more with NEVER asking anything in return. You were there for Reed and I when we needed you the most and you will be missed. Janel,
there are no words to express how sorry I am for you and the rest of the family. Jerry was a great dad and I hope the kids will get through this difficult time by being there for each other.

Dave Griggs came home from the hospital Wednesday afternoon. His left arm is broken and he received stitches in his forehead. His family is extremely thankful to have him home and extend their sympathy to the Sprague family.

i am so upset over this tragedy. i am so very sorry for your loss. i saw this accident after it happened on route 88 as the vehicles sat in the middle of the highway. my heart sunk as i was detoured and i saw the severity of the vehicles ....i prayed as i drove away. i had a horrible feeling. i am saddened of the ending to the accident...i hoped so much for a better outcome...for everyone to be okay. i really am sorry for your families loss. my son trevor just walked in my room and said he knows logan. he is saddened as well. if we can help somehow in any way please let me know...i will do anything i can. may God help all of you in this terrible time.

I wish the Board of Education would have thought twice before cutting the budget and taking away the bus that always brought the wrestlers to that "school organized" tournament. There has always been a bus, this year, no bus. If there was a bus provided then Jerry wouldn't have had to drive his son to the tournament. Just maybe this tragedy could have had a better outcome! God Bless the family!
