Resident of Sandy-Damaged Home Interrupts Burglary, Brick PD Arrests Toms River Man

Cops: 22-year-old suspect may be responsible for 10 to 12 burglaries in recent weeks

A Toms River man has been charged with burglary after police say a resident spotted him inside his Sandy-damaged Toronto Drive home and called police.

Police now believe their suspect, Robert Kovacs, 22, of Toms River, may be responsible for between 10 and 12 more additional burglaries in areas of town affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The owner of the home on Toronto Drive, in the township's Seawood Harbor section, called police after he spotted a man flee out the back door of his home around 10:45 p.m. Monday night, according to Sgt. Keith Reinhard.

The resident told police that when he returned home Monday night, he parked his car in a neighbor's driveway due to his own driveway being blocked by storm debris. When he arrived, he found an unknown vehicle parked in that neighbor’s driveway, occupied by a female and a three-month old baby.

"The female indicated that she was waiting for her boyfriend who was at a friend’s home in the neighborhood," said Reinhard.

Upon entering his own house, the resident discovered that there was an intruder in his home, who had just fled out the back door. The victim notified police and gave a description of the vehicle that the intruder entered, said Reinhard.

Brick Police Ptl. Eric Haugh spotted and ultimately stopped the vehicle on Adamston Road and, after speaking with its occupants, placed Kovacs under arrest for the Toronto Drive burglary, said Reinhard.

The female passenger and her baby were also escorted to Brick Police Headquarters.

Kovacs was ultimately charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and possession of burglar’s tools. He was processed on a warrant and his bail was set by Municipal Court Judge Robert LePore at $30,000 cash.

He was transported to the Ocean County Jail where he remained Tuesday, jail records showed.

As a result of an investigation by Brick Police Detectives Michael Feeney and Mark Byrne, police now now believe Kovacs could be responsible for as many as 10 to 12 additional burglaries in recent weeks, all of which are located in areas of town that were affected by the storm.

The other burglaries are still under investigation.

"Certainly, depending on what they come up with, there could be additional charges," said Reinhard.

Also arrested on Dec. 22 was Robert Kovacs, 21, of Joanna Drive, who was charged by Sheriff’s Detective C. Vazquez with being a fugitive from Chester County, where he also faces charges of failure to appear on original charges of theft by unlawful taking of movable property. Kovacs was lodged in the Ocean County Jail pending extradition back to the state of Pennsylvania.

Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard said there haven't been any notable arrests for looting, though police have pulled over suspicious vehicles and kept trespassers at bay.

Ignorant minded people thats what you are. We live in a society of economic crumble but committing a crime is wrong no matter the circumstances however you have politicians stealing every dam day yet how many of you say a dam thing about that. How many of you have cheated in one way or the other I'd say a large percentage but since you never got caught you'd never admit it. If you want to follow the law than follow it correctly. You people are so dam judgmental whatever happened to innocent before proven guilty. He'll suffer as I'm sure his family is suffering and no matter what a person can never escape themselves.

Give me a break. This is not the first, or second time he has been in trouble. And you can only play the woe-as-me card for so long. There are many, many people who are hurting economically and yet they don't resort to stealing (especially from people who are already down on their luck).

KG, stick up for him when you come home to find him in your house!

Hope along with his thief tools he doesn't have a weapon too. If he does, try using sophistry on him...that will save you for sure.

The courts are too lenient with criminals who break into homes. That is one of the most heinous crimes that could be comitted.Home invaders and burgulars should be shot on sight. We need strict penalties dor these low life dirt bags.

Back to the issue at hand people.... on the island fencing continues to be pushed down. People are being reported to brick PD that there are nonresidents with metal detectors and cameras on oceanside properties. As a full time resident I know the PD abd state troopers have our backs I hope they get the fencing back quickly before jewelry etc will never be in the hands of the rightful owners.

If I caught him in my house it would have ended differently. We wouldn't be talking about what sentence etc.... we would be talking about his funeral. Looters are shot on sight; NO EXCEPTIONS!!! I don't care about any of the bleeding heart liberal stuff, if he's in my house, without an invite, he will be carried out in a body bag. PERIOD!! GAME OVER!

I Must agree, Brick PD was ineffectual when our home was broken into 3 times, dusting for fingerprints and just leaving dark dust all over the house.

Went down that way yesterday. Sure are a lot of State Police patrolling and other PD cars as well. Hard to tell who belongs there or who would be suspicious. Pictures and aerial shots cant do justice to all the damaged and missing homes. Its really a site, hard to believe how much devastation Sandy created. Why people steal from others down on their luck is seems like just adding so much "insult" to an already heart breaking situation.

Total scum. His woman is a real prize as well. Hey let's take the baby with us to rob a house, sure sounds great. The sad thing is we have to provide him with a lawyer medical care food and a roof over his head. He will be back on the streets real soon. I think the courts should cut his fingers off so he can't steel again. While they are at it him and his sorry excuse of a girl friend should be sterilized so they can't reproduce again.

I graduated with the Gondalfo brothers, they used to live on the corner of A street. There both scumbags, especially Chris who thinks he is involved in the mob. The both of them are fake wannabee hardcore Italian tough guys, The thing where they both screwed up on is getting high on their own supply. They wanna sell pills when they do heroin and pain killers. Just doesn't make sense, nothing but trash.
