Red Light Cams Back Online

State authorizes ticketing to resume

If you're in a rush, beware: Brick's three red light cameras are sending out tickets again.

The state Department of Transportation has authorized 63 of the state's red light cameras that were suspended from issuing tickets last month to begin issuing them again.

The issue, state officials said at the time, was that an internationally-accepted formula to calculate the length of a yellow light at intersections may not have conformed to a slightly different formula specified in the law allowing the state's red light cameras in certain municipalities.

Each affected municipality has conducted the requested traffic analysis and provided their re-certifications to NJDOT via a professionally licensed municipal engineer, officials said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon. In each case the results have confirmed that the duration of a yellow light at the authorized intersection meets the minimum duration as required by the legislation.

Since the cameras weren't physically turned off during the length of the suspension period – they just didn't issue summonses – traffic tickets will now be mailed to drivers who violated the red light during that time.

Brick is one of 25 municipalities statewide allowed to operate the cameras under a pilot program that was approved in 2009, and has three intersections covered by them. Those intersections are Route 70 and Brick Boulevard, Route 70 and Chambers Bridge Road and Brick Boulevard and Hooper Avenue.

Drivers who violate the red light signal are slapped with an $85 ticket after video of the violation is reviewed by a police officer.

Do you have to go thru any of the lights to get there? When you go thru these lights, slow down alittle before you get there. Then you don't have to jam on your brakes. I see lately that's what most drivers are doing, being more alert and cautious. Not trying to beat the lights. I had a feeling Brick's lights were on the button. I guess your lawsuits are down the drain.

So instead of raising property taxes as a result of Christie's continuing severe cuts to municipal aid, municipalities will now tax you through these camera fines, cameras that are "rigged" to capture innocent drivers.

Cant have a cop on every traffic light corner, so good for the cameras! An idea would be to have a time count down display just like in crosswalks that tell you how much time you have. That way those "innocent drivers" wont get caught!....when they speed up too late!

If you have to go through the red, it means that you didn't pay attention to the yellow. Your fault and you deserve a ticket. These are basic driving skills and awareness taught in high school driver's ed. If this is a problem for you, you probably either need to go to a driving school or turn in your license.

WRITE THEM UP. IF PEOPLE WOULD START PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR DRIVING, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY THE PIPER. THEY SPEED,TEXT OR TALK ON PHONE WHILE DRIVING AND THEY CRY WHEN THEY GET TICKETED. MOST ACCIDENTS DON'T JUST HAPPEN, THEY ARE CAUSED BY A CARELESS IDIOT. NEXT TIME YOU GET A TICKET FOR BLASTING THROUGH A RED LIGHT, JUST IMAGINE KILLING A PERSON IN THE PROCESS.

The next thing that I would like to see is a plan to catch the speeders in residential development areas. People blowing through stop signs and well exceeding the 25mph speed limits in areas where we raise our children in hopes that they won't get hit by a car because someone is speeding while talking or texting on their phone and treat each stop sign like a yield sign. Who would have thought that our neighborhoods could be so dangerous from idiots with a drivers license.

I don't see the problem. If you're a Brick resident, and still getting caught by these things, you're doing something wrong. You know they're there, you know what they do, what's it gonna take to learn not to go through them? Rear end accidents don't happen nearly as much as you say. I go through these intersections a dozen times a day and havent seen ONE since the cameras went up. Don't get mad when you're unable to break the law as you please anymore. I'd also like to see something done about the idiots that keep turning left onto Drum Point from Hooper after their green arrow is gone and oncoming traffic is barreling down on them. Makes my blood boil every time I have to slam my brakes for one of these idiots.

My opinion about the cameras is mixed. It is good that they make people more alert when approaching an intersection, but I find myself very apprehensive about the light changing unexpectedly. Years ago I went through a yellow light about to turn red and got pulled over. Years later, being gun shy about yellow lights, I had to brake suddenly on Brick Blvd when the light turned yellow… and I got rear ended. Should have gone through, and there were no cameras back then. The cameras make me even more nervous. As someone already put it, it's like playing musical chairs. If the data shows the cameras really do prevent accidents, that's a plus. If not, then they are nothing but another scheme to extract money from the people. I would rather see more attention paid to stopping tailgaters and speeders.

Mr. Petoia sir, Now theres a smart comment coming from a person who knows what he's talking about. I too am shy when approaching on of these cameras because I too was filmed, paid my fine but still think I was innocent because of the quickness of the yellow light. I have not potested because of the additional cost of the court fine which is sttagering but if this saves at least one death from occurring, its worth it.

If those red light cameras save one life, then they are well worth the money you "law breaking red light runner cry babies" will pay! Next, cameras on stop signs and then roadside cameras that will take your pictures on the cell phone. When the satellite indicates movement in the GPS in your smart phones, over lets say 5 mph, you get a ticket! ALL you law breakers deserve ALL the tickets you get! Love to take a poll on how many of these crybabies have bad driving records and multiple traffic tickets!

There's a better way to prevent these types of problems at intersections. It is called dilemma zone detection. Which is what causes the running a red light issue, whether to brake or continue when the light turns yellow at a specific point. HOWEVER, this will not raise money for a township so therefore it is normally off the table. I am a IMSA certified traffic engineer so I have experience in these matters. Google "dilemma zone detection" and see for yourself. I recommend staying away from the red light camera locations as a matter of course.

Red light cameras do not save lives. They just generate income. I have been driving for 20 + years and have not noticed a plague of red light runners. Getting a ticket in the mail because you did not come to a complete stop before turning right on red at 5:00am on a Sunday does not save lives. It is intrusive. Whats next cameras all over town monitoring for litterers. Thats illegal too. # sheep longing for false security

Oh, and "They just generate income", good! As far as I am concerned my increases in car insurance rates are a tax created by the bad drivers. So who causes all those accidents? Not the drivers who drive the speed limit at which I believe the yellow light duration is timed. The ONLY variable I see here on red light violations is the decision to stop and reaction times. But when your rear bumper is across the stop line, your are quilty !

Brick is notorious for the highly congested, multi-laned mess of a road system it has, snaking its way through an abundance of strip malls, shopping centers, fast food meccas, etc ... So now we know that according to Brick, their traffic light cameras are operating within the "minimum required yellow-light phase".
Seriously? Would it have been so horrible to extend the yellow light phase by 3-4 seconds - instead of sticking with the "minimum required" timing? Drivers see a yellow light and need to make a split second judgement call.... judging speed, distance from the light, cars all around them, (especially behind them) and then decide it they can make it SAFELY through a yellow light, or need to immediately begin braking. Wouldn't it be better to offer them a few extra seconds instead of making everyone more concerned about being "caught on camera" MAYBE making the wrong call?

Mattie, you don't change the law because people are being caught breaking it, THEY need to change their patterns and behaviors. It's really very simple. If you don't break the law, you don't get a ticket. If you don't come to a complete stop before turning right on red at 5am on a Sunday, you broke the law, you get a ticket. The laws aren't suspended because theirs nobody on the road. If you're driving down a long straight road that nobody else is on, it doesn't suddenly become legal to do 100mph. If the police were to pick and choose who gets a ticket based on anything other than the law, you'd all be here for hours complaining how you got a ticket and Bobby up the block didn't. It's simple. Don't run the red light, don't get a ticket. Come to a complete stop at a red lIght, and then turn, don't get a ticket. If you're incapable of learning not to break the law, then maybe you shouldn't even be driving.

Most people, when you ride up on their ass, SLOW DOWN. You're actually getting the opposite result of what you wanted. Brilliant.

EVERY and I mean EVERY ticket issued for failure to obey the law is verified by a police officer before it is sent out. He watches the video and if he thinks you are at fault he will issue the ticket. If he feel that if a ticket is not warranted one does not get issued.

If you OBEY the Law, you won't get a ticket, it's that simple. And, if the revenue helps to keep MY TAXES down then I say install the cameras at every intersection.

After viewing the video, admitting that I was wrong and that I deserved it, I paid the fine and moved on with my life. This happened when the cameras were fairly new.

Nearly every place that has installed traffic camera's has had issues with them. The news stories pop up from place to place on a monthly basis. Regardless of what their intended purpose supposedly is or what you or I would like them to acheive, that is enough reasonf or me to say they should go.
Furthermore the concept of the company responsible for installation and maintnence being a paid a percentage of tickets generated is reason number 2 they should go. There is far too much incentive for post inspection tampering there.

Eitherway whether ya want them or not just get past the whole "they are for safety" argument because they aren't. They are to generate income and that's it.

This is the most fair and unbiased form of law enforcement. It will catch the kids that are distracted, the adults who think they are above the law and the old people who can't react the way they used to...and everyone in between THAT REFUSES TO OBEY THE LAW. We learn the difference between red yellow and green lights before we can even ride a bike. I am so pleasantly surprised to see all those in support of these life savers and law breaker catchers. I imagine the ones that complain are the same ones who break the law and get caught or are inconvenienced now because they have to drive the speed limit and (heaven forbid) more cautiously. When you drive around in a machine that can so easily and indiscriminately kill other people you should take the responsibility seriously. If I end up getting a ticket at one of these cameras I will know that it is MY fault.

MOST of the people these things "catch" are not full on running a red light, but either trying to make a left turn or are traveling through the intersection. I feel bad for the businesses around these lights, I would be curious to see if they have felt any decline in customers since the cameras went in. Personally I do my best to avoid them at all cost, rather just not have to deal with it.

Would you then complain the officer was not fair and fight the ticket in court? I guess someone with your position would find it hard to argue against a camera, rather than a police officer. They watch us at ATMs, they watch us at banks, they watch us in shopping malls and you better believe the NSA listens to our telephone calls, cellular calls and internet chatter. More than that, a super secret National Security Letter available from any FBI Office, without a court order, for most anything the government can dream up can be issued, without any notice to you, and the information gathered is admissible in court. Ok. Then why go through all the trouble and expense of putting up red light cameras, when a piece of equipment no bigger than a large book can do a better job with less expense and less potential to harass the motoring public.
Again, I would ask people commenting on this post to read the article I posted to understand what you are dealing with, it is not "red light running", it is a "dilemma zone" issue.

Let me explain this more intelligently.
Scenario 1: Let's say someone is driving stupidly, drinking coffee while texting on the phone, looks down, the light goes yellow, they speed up, it goes red, the other side goes green, the at fault motorist blows the light, side swipes a car, causes a major accident. Yes, they now get a ticket but the accident still occurs.

Same person, same scenario of driving stupidly, same not realizing light has turned yellow BUT the detector that is now at the intersection senses that the vehicle is not slowing down for the approaching yellow and realizes that at the current rate of travel it will miss the yellow and run the red light, so the detector tells the intersection to add 2 seconds of yellow to the light to allow this one car to pass. The car makes the yellow, the opposing traffic is not put into a potential accident situation. Yes, the township loses out on potential revenue but the accident is avoided, injuries do not occur, damages do not incur, insurance rates do not go up.

More grid lock? ...interfering with traffic light timing? While I might agree less accidents may occur, you would be giving those who WANT TO TRY AND BEAT THE LIGHT, a reprieve! While some drivers may be caught in an indecision, I must believe most are just trying to beat that light being in a hurry! Sorry but this theory is ridiculous and an excuse! Hey everyone ! I have an idea !! Why dont the county of Ocean or the State of NJ install redlight cameras in Lakewood if they want to profit millions ?? Oh wait I forgot they let the Hasidics get away with whatever they want !!! If it was up to me I would have cameras & Troopers in that filthy town cracking down on all the illegal stuff thats going on !! So just as a heads up if you want to break all road rules and whatever other corruption you may be into !! Set up shop in FilthWood ! I meant Lakewood NJ !!! Anything goes !! WildWild West ! And dont worry about the police because they are even lazier than TRPD if thats even possible but its true !! Check it Out !!!

NOt that I make a habit of running red lights, But what happens on weekends in the summer & during any holiday getting caught behind someone that is on Brick Blvd, turing left onto chamberbridge then someone desides they want to go to Cormer Post Diner making a left into that plaza backing up the traffic & then while in the middle of the intersection the light changes, ... YOU can ..A cut someone off that is in the right lane * that murges anyway, risking getting hit ... Or B get a ticket...?

I hope they all have insurance, because if you rearend someone it's your fault. Good luck. Slow down alittle when you come to a camera lit intersection. 70% of the people getting tickets are out of towners.

I just can't understand why you FOOLS can't obey the law instead of trying to re-write it to suit YOUR needs.

OBEY THE F***ING LAW like everyone else does.

Not So Dumb, Someone answered my question already, they understood. Evidently English wasn't your primary language. But ,I must agree with your post.

I like the camera if the police do not check plate before issuing violation. This would elimanate influence pedaling.
