Windward Beach Voted Brick's Best Park
Where's your favorite outdoor spot in town?
In our second weekly Readers' Choice poll, Windward Beach bested several other outdoor recreation areas as Brick's favorite.
A close second were ocean beaches one, two and three.
Check back on Monday for next week's poll, which will ask readers for their favorite local spot to hang out on St. Patrick's Day.
Editor's Note: Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor, based on poll results and reviews on Patch Places. Please vote only once per survey, per Patch.

Windward Beach is the best spot in town. Now, if we could only get rid of the jellyfish!

we once had a nice beach and park in bay harbor, but after years of the mayor promising to repair the beach from washing away and taking care of the equipment there isnt much left. many promises have been made, but none ever furfilled. nice park and great crabbing but slowing being wiped away.

Not to brag, but right in my back yard or side yard is a pretty nice hang out with a priceless view. And the Chickens like it, too.

The Saw Mill bike trail is my favorite. We walk the dog there every day, bike there all summer long.
We pick up trash constantly, cut the trees that go down in the storms and hang dangerously over the trail, and are getting ready to fill in the ruts made by the quads that illegally tear up the trail.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, we constantly wonder what happened to the $13000. in grants the town got for trail maintenance. It's quite obvious that not one dime was spent on maintenance of this trail. Wonder where Acropolis diverted that money to.

hi joan we too had grants for the bay harbor beach i spoke to people in brick and ocean county but they never seem to get the work done, even maintenance is an issue, i have spoke to acroplis and sent letters but as everywhere else it is going on deaf ears. soon the water will be in the streets and homes will be ruined, such a shame.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in the bond ordinance of Dec 2010, in which the town voted on issuing 10.2 million in bonds, 6 million was for Traders Cove an the other 4.2 was to go to township parks and rec areas in need of improvement.
My question is what happened to that 4.2 million and why was it not used on parks and beached like stated. And before someone jumps down my throat 90% of the new school play grounds was paid for by PTA fund raisers and 10% by the town.
More empty promises!

Windward Beach used to be the best the best park in town, until the powers that be decided to charge $5 a head to use it. Windward for the past two summers has been a ghost town. It's been so bad in fact, that the vendors that paid to be there for the summers almost sued the town, none of them made their money back and the first vendor didn't know they were going to charge for the beach, he had been told it was a free beach with a lot of beach goers, not after they started charging, the vendors were satisfied and prevented suing the town by giving them free access to sell their stuff at Summerfest. It's time to stop the charge at Windward. The amount of staff that they carry down there is not needed or their hours need to be cut. I watch as the staff plays soccer up by the office on our dime. Or sit and play cards uptop on the pick nick tables. Hey it's not the staffs fault, they do a great job keeping Windward clean and in order, it's just there not enough work to keep them busy from 8-5. I'm not talking about the camp counselors, but the actually staff at Windward, there are way too many lifeguards for almost ankle deep water as well. What about applying the red light fines towards Windward to keep it free, Oh wait, none of us have any idea where that cash is going to. Seems to me the almost million bucks collected by the red light cams, could be applied towards the $60,000 it takes to run Windward each summer. I personally don't think it costs that much.

How about free Windward Beach passes for Brick residents, and $5 for out of towers? Has anyone thought of this.......

From what I've been told, since the town receives Green Acres funds for Windward, they can not make Windward a residents only beach. I was also under the impression that Windward had to be kept free as well to receive those funds, it's why they don't charge for Summerfest. I've been told by the Green Acres people that Brick can ask for donations, but can not charge, I have no idea how the town has been getting away with charging for the beach.

My wife and I love Saw Mill Trail, walk it 1-2 times a day with our dog, and bike it almost daily in the summer.
However, the gravel base has many spots in disrepair. Memorial High School Track Team uses the trail on a daily basis, and the town is going to wait until someone gets injured running through all the ruts before they repair the trail.
The town did a great service when they made Saw Mill Trail some years back, but it's a shame there's no plan for routine maintenance.
We have called the Parks Department, and brought pictures to the Mayors Office to no avail. Hope someone who can take some action reads this.

Not pointing a finger, but a lot of people let the dog poo accumulate to a point where it's hard not to step in at some point along the trail.

Mark,.......Fully agree with you on that one, and have brushed poop off the trail with a stick many times. I can't believe how lazy or uncaring some pet owners are.
Most of us pet owners clean up after our dogs. I for one don't like stepping it it.
