Pet Store Operators Charged With 42 Counts of Animal Cruelty

NJSPCA police criminally charge owners of Puppies Galore in Brick

The owner and manager of a Brick pet store that was shut down by authorities last month have been charged with a combined total of 42 counts of animal cruelty.

Investigators with the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals filed the charges late last week against Maria De Santis, 57, of Old Bridge, and Nathan "Nat" Sladkin, 71, of Farmingdale. De Santis owned Puppies Galore in the Brick Mall shopping plaza on Hooper Avenue, and Sladkin was the store's manager, authorities said.

DeSantis was charged with 38 counts of animal cruelty and Sladkin was charged with four counts of animal cruelty, according to SPCA Capt. Rick Yocum.

The majority of the criminal charges, Yocum said, were filed for failure to provide necessary sustenance in the form of veterinary care for the puppies.  The remaining criminal charges were filed for failure to provide proper shelter and water.

After a complaint was filed with the Ocean County Health Department on Jan. 26, a total of 39 puppies were removed from the store and taken to a number of animal shelters and veterinary hospitals. Nearly all of the puppies were at least mildly ill, authorities said at the time, and four of the dogs were seriously ill.

Each criminal animal cruelty charge is subject to fines up to $1,000 and potential jail time of up to six months. Yocum said the SPCA may still file civil charges in addition to the criminal charges.

"The good news is these puppies were removed from a less than healthy environment," Yocum said.

The Ocean County Health Department had rated Puppies Galore as unsatisfactory, prompting its owner to voluntarily shut down the store before the puppies were removed. That case is still pending and a hearing in municipal court has been set for Feb. 14.

The store itself was empty Monday, and all of the cages, supplies and furniture had been removed.

De Santis and Sladkin are scheduled to appear in court in Brick on the animal cruelty charges on Thursday.

As the legal process continues, all of the puppies will remain at animal shelters and under the care of veterinarians.

"The puppies in our shelter are doing well," said Pat Wallace of the Jersey Shore Animal Center in Brick, where a number of the dogs are staying.

Yocum said the four most seriously ill dogs were taken to NorthStar VETS – a veterinary trauma center in Robbinsville – and all are recovering from pneumonia after receiving several days of treatment.

NJSPCA officers Lt. Thomas Yanisko and Officer Paul Schlossbach took the lead on the case on behalf of the NJSPCA, Yocum said. The store, which had been open for three months, was under investigation by the NJSPCA before the puppies were removed.

"This has been a very collaborative investigation," Yocum said.

Neither De Santis nor Sladkin could be immediately reached for comment.

He tryed as hard as he could to not pay me, I took it to channel 7 news with Tappy Phillips they did a story on it, only then did I get paid. He also ran the store in sea girt, then one in Oakhurst, then Brick. How long dose it take to get rid of this uncaring twit. Hope he burns in hell.

Folks, try to be at the hearing on February 14th. It's only for one-half hour, and it will make a difference. If ever there was a time to ban together against the inhumane treatment of animals, it is now. Rarely do we get the opportunity to make a difference so we ought to come together as a community and lend our voice to these defenseless animals.

We support our local stores because they demonstrate good business practices. All store owners and community leaders should join forces against unethical store owners because it is not good business to mistreat animals. It is unconscionable that the same owner has been operating in different locations for near two decades.

Tired of the BS
It is my understanding that our 10th District Legislators have instructed the Office of Legislative Services to draft a bill whereby providing for tougher penalties associated with the mistreatment of animals.

In that a copy of the bill in draft form is not yet available, I cannot comment on the specifics of the bill with you at this time. It's in its first-stage of inception. However, I was told that the bill's birth is a direct consequence of the events surrounding the Puppies Galore pet store.

Although it won't be applicable for these particular circumstances, I commend our 10th District Legislators for recognizing the need for animal-friendly legislation.

Pat Wallace of the Jersey Shore Animal Center in Brick says all the puppies they have are doing good. Good that is till they put them down for not adopting them out. This shelter has such wacko rules that even the best pet parents can not adopt from them. Maybe the authorities should investigate them too and shut them down. Do you know how many kittens and puppies get rejected for adoption?????????? TOO MANY TO COUNT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have always heard good things about JSAC, so after our black lab had to be put down at age 14, we went to the center and adopted a border collie mix. We've had "Athena" for over two years. Good dog, and no problems with the shelter. They are very careful who they let adopt their animals, and that is a good thing because many people who seek pets are not really able or willing to care for them properly.

Thanks Dan...I will see if I can confirm that offer and propose the same to them...@Sal, this is the impression I have always had. I know they are cautious and this can be a good thing. I hope those who can't obtain a pet from them keep trying if they are truly ready to be a good pet owner (I know thses people, too). I do know a full-time employee at JSAC and she is a tremendous pet-advocate. Truth told, althought I have had many pets in my lifetime and I have a 10 year old Portie who is a dream, I am not sure if I would be eligible to receive a dog from JSAC, according to some of their requirements, but it would not stop me from adopting a dog elsewhere...somehow, I think someone would allow me to (:

Definitely glad to hear these charges have come down against these pieces of genetic scum. I hope everyone keeps in mind, however, that the other store on Rt. 70 is still open and engages in the exact same practices as the store that's been shut down. Please find the time to show up between 12-4 Saturday and show your support to the protesters (who were a great, friendly group of people - in contrast to the people who owned that store who wasted your tax dollars attempting to call the police for any and every little thing last week).
While it won't erradicate the puppy mill industry - we can at least send a message to our Mayor that we, the citizens of Brick, do not want to be party to this kind of outrage in our town.

Yup, another good example of why to adopt and not buy from a store! I think if they can file a civil suit they should sue them for the care of each of the animals removed until a permanent home for them all is found then throw them in jail.

Ken I know that. I also know how much the town spent on legal fees to try and get them shut down. I was being sarcastic.

The point I was making was the town needs to put some laws on the books to prevent certain types of businesses from operating in the town. Several years ago the Mayor introduce an ordnance to ban pet shops that sell puppies. It was introduced but never went any further.

http://www.bogartsdaddy.com/bouvier/Bouv_Pages/article-wsj-puppy-lemon-laws.htm This article is about Nat Sladkin, former owner of Puppies Galore, among others. Clearly, he did not have a clean record when he came to Brick...In the past week, I have spoken to people who have personally witnessed this man's abusive behavior toward his "products." Google him. I will also find links for the owners of the shop on rte 70. On Saturday, I saw families leaving the shop (two with pups in arms). They must have been told not to look at those "crazy" people with signs...but I saw the kids taking furtive glances over their shoulders with a questioning and worried expressions. If we can't get to these people with the truth and stop the demand we are doomed. I am happy to see the Patch involved...where are the other media outlets?

Lisa, thank you for sharing this informative article.

"Dog breeders -- many of them farmers whose hard times have prompted the addition of puppies as a cash crop -- are spread out across thousands of miles in the Midwest, Southeast and Middle Atlantic states. The Agriculture Department has a mere 72 inspectors to keep tabs on the thousands of breeders, and their duties also include about 4,800 other animal-related businesses, from circuses and zoos to airline pet-shipment operations. Pet stores are specifically exempt from the federal inspections under the Animal Welfare Act of 1966."

Portia well put. It is this entaglement of farm animal/companion animal laws that makes things very difficult. Each state has its own issues...laws are scrapped, or not enforced because of lack of inspectors...it is a very different world. But there are many fighting the good fight on all fronts. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ban-Puppy-Stores-in-Monmouth-Ocean-Counties-NJ/324770907532953?ref=ts&sk=wall

Many years ago the Township fought to not let him open the store. But because of a ordinance, the township lost. I attended many town meetings. The residents came out in protest and there were petitions too. I believe a new ordinance was adopted so no new adult store could be opened near schools and Churches. I even remember the store owners name. Real creep. I am glad the puppies are doing ok.

42 Counts of animal cruelty! Insane!!! Fun fact, Two of PETA's employees (One of the Largest Animal Rights Groups), were arrested and convicted of 31 counts of animal cruelty. Not much better than these folks. Yet we give thousands if not millions of dollars to PETA in hopes that they'll protect the animals. New Laws and ordinances are great, but if nothings being done on a grander scheme of things than what makes anyone think that any of this will make a difference either? I want all animals treated fairly not just because something happened. And just because its a big name like PETA doesnt mean they'll do right by the animals. Obviously.
