Per-Pupil Costs in Brick Trail State Average
School report cards now out
State data on school districts released late last week shows Brick trailed the state average in per-pupil costs.
For the 2010-11 school year, the year for which data was recently released, Brick spent a total of $14,733 per student, about $3,000 below the state average of $17,469.
The total cost per pupil includes services such as transportation, as well as the cost of private school tuition for special education students and certain facilities costs that were not included in state "report cards" released in previous years. This year's report card recalculated previous annual data based on the new standards.
Teacher salaries and benefits added up to a lower percentage of the total budget last year, at 53 percent, down from 59 percent in the two years prior. The state average is 57 percent.
Administrative salaries and benefits last year totaled 8 percent of the budget, short 1 percent of the state average of 9 percent. The 8 percent figure has now held steady for the previous three school years.
Local taxpayers funded 67 percent of the school district's costs through property taxes, higher than the state average of 52 percent, while the state funded 29 percent of the school budget. Federal aid accounted for 5 percent of the total. Generally, the local tapayers' share of district costs rises as state aid drops under the state's school funding formula.
Faculty members, on average, earned $58,250 in Brick last year, up from $54,830 the year before, but less than the state average of $63,851. Administrators earned $119,791 on average last year, on par with the state's average administrator salary of $119,491. Administrator salaries rose from an average of $115,123 the prior year, and $110,843 during the 2008-09 school year.

We need to do something about class sizes. They are definitely going up and it's hurting the kids. At my kids' elementary school, when my older child started there were about 22 kids per class. My younger child has 27 kids in her class. The kids who need tons of attention are getting it, but the ones who are "easy" are just coasting. It's not the teachers' faults, the rooms are simply overcrowded!

Blame that on the senior citizens for voting down the budget every year...
classroom size averages in Brick are ridiculous...
glad my child doesn't go school in Brick..

We can't just blame the senior citizens (when my parents lived in Brick, they always supported the school budget). What about the thousands of parents who don't even bother to VOTE? That's the real shame.

Now the budget doesn't get voted on anymore... so long as with 2% cap.
yet the BOE is cowtailing to the senior citizens... because they vote regardless of the election...
I was disappointed in the 0% tax increase for school budget... with the state of disrepair of the schools... they could have taken a 2% tax increase and use the money for capital projects!!! But the seniors prevailed.

JD, that 2% cap refers to the MUNICIPAL budget, not the school budget. Two totally different things! We still vote on school budgets. (Well, I do at least. Not sure about the rest of Brick parents.)
What bothers me is seeing what "Abbott" districts have, compared to non-Abbott districts. How is it fair that Neptune has a palace, complete with a multi-colored, glowing "N" on top, while BTHS is practically falling apart? I read somewhere that Long Branch has a beautiful indoor pool. Really? Why is *my* money paying for that luxury when we can't even fix up our own buildings to a livable state. That is a problem on a STATE level, and one Mr. Christie needs to address (rather than attacking teachers).

Betterdays - not true that the 2% cap only applies to the manicipal budget. Because our elections were moved to Nov, Brick would get the 2% increase without voter approval. But, the BOE decided not to take it. It would have cost us pennies, and maybe some of the work needed to be done on the schools could have been funded. Please remember that we spend LESS than average in this state. Not using the cap money is not responsible. Looks good on paper - but try selling your home with the condition the schools are in right now.

Look at how much they're spending in these towns:
Lakewood High : $23,362
Asbury Park High:$29,095
Wow, with this much money being throw at the kids they must be full of kids going to Harvard!
Either that or they are spending millions building new turf stadiums with all these tax dollars (like they did in Asury)

average classroom size is like 12 instead of 25 like brick...
most get categorized as special ed... which really means they are disruptive in mainstream classes.

Did you know that people in those communities have relatives or friends in brick and they ship their children to us to educate? I wouldn’t be surprised that it cost us in the Million dollar area to care for the slacker’s children!

The main reason we trail the state in per student cost is that our property taxes go to the slacker communities to pay for their non-preforming children! It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out, the Dems in Trenton have been bleeding us for 30+ years to buy votes in the slacker communities!

Wrong...
These numbers are from the Brick Report Card...
Now if you said, North Jersey has higher salaries than Central/South Jersey... that accounts for a lot of it... but classroom size is the other aspect.
Holmdel cost per pupil is $17,972... higher than state average!!

I downloaded the data from the State's website which gives us all the numbers in a nice handy Excel spreadsheet (http://education.state.nj.us/rc/rc11/database.htm). If you calculate the state average excluding the 31 Abbott districts, the state average drops to $16,547. The puts Brick only $1800 below the state non-Abbott average which seems like good fiscal responsibility to me. Its amazing that 31 districts drives up the state average by that much.

The Abbott districts will spend every penny they get so that they can hang on to their state aid... if they don't spend it, they lose it. So that means they get to build beautiful new facilities while our schools are falling apart.

something seems really off balance that our HIGHER THEN AVERAGE, while the cost for our our childrens needs that our taxes are going up for is LOWER then avarage... seems like a lot of money either way for the unsafe & poor condtiton Brick HS is in & that we as parents ( making on avg. In brick making btwn 50,000 to 53,000) a yr when our super & other Admds. are making triple that & WE are ask to supply Paper protects, ( even soap) WHY if your income is that much higher them the gerneral public you all pitch in & spend about 5,000 ( TAX WRITE OFF) & you'll have enough Paper protects lysol wipes etc.. to last the yeat I bet in all the schools in Brick...

You may be asked to send in paper products or Lysol wipes because they are not supplied to the classrooms - even in wealthy districts. That said, have you been around children? Try using the brown paper towels that are industrial to sop up a spill made in a classroom - and tell me Lysol wipes don't help stop germs generated by children who pick their noses and lick things on their desks. This happens in my daughter's classroom, and it is not a special education class. Should the teacher have to supply these items?

@ Mr G I dont think outofthebox was saying teachers should clip in, it sounds as if that was directed to those making 3x the average income of brick familes. & If those brown paper sand paper that is provided to our children is gross ( Which it is) & kids are picking their noses in class Is it really going to BREAK someone making 120,000+ to buy a few classrooms wipes, germx, paper towels TP Etc...? What the BOE is saying the parents is that VOTE for our Budget, make sure we get our raises ( while many in brick are struggling ) & by the was since all the funds ran out there are no simple nessesities for your children.... & Dont even start with the share the HS is in... Flat out dangerous!!!

The $175K is factored into the average pupil cost. I suspect a lot to do with the reason we spend a less per student than the state average is because Brick is the 17th biggest district in the state. If you look at the top 10 biggest non-Abbott distrcts, their average cost per student is
County | District | enrollment | totcost
-----------+--------------------------------------------------+------------+---------
MERCER | West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District | 9808.0 | 16232
CAMDEN | Cherry Hill Public Schools | 11042.0 | 15704

If you look at the top 10 biggest non-Abbott distrcts, their average cost per student is $14,906 which is a very minor diffrerence to our $14,733

This whole comments section is a treasure trove of misinformation in every direction. I wish people took the time to figure out where the money actually goes instead of immediately assuming that because they want to raise taxes it MUST be voted against.

Its not JUST the seniors fault. They are vastly outnumbered. Turnout (except for seniors) is awful. The physical condition of the schools and class sizes are embarrassing. And when the roof falls in on one of the schools voters will ask. "How could this happen?"
Look in the mirror.

Approximately 25% of the Brick registered voters are Senior Citizens..
They vote...
They put up voting places in senior communities making if very easy to vote.
Problem is... people with children don't vote!!!
Now with the elections, including BOE held in November... it may be a different now.

JD I vote every year.... however I do find it harder & harder every year, to defend why I DO vote ... My taxes go up every year & services for the kids get cut, & the schools are in worse condition then ever... & Adms, Supers pay get high & more demand on the teachers that are with our kids sometimes longer then we are ( & they also have been getting cuts & have to BEG of minl. raises) I think MORE People would vote if they had a say in where & how the funds where being spent, YES windmills are great, but lets get the HSat least out of substandard condition before thinking windmills. Should be needs over wants, NOT the other way around.

84% of your tax bill goes toward the BOE ($0.84 cents of every dollar)
about 83% of the BOE budget goes toward payroll ($0.83 cents of every dollar)
so that leaves about 17% ($0.17 cents) of the BOE budget for everything else.
there are 12 schools in the Twp. so let's say each school gets 1% (total 12%)
that now leaves 5% left of the BOE budget for whatever else.
be blessed for what you have

Good Point, But let be honest ,education is what YOU ( as the student) put into it. Though Brick is a lower to average income community the kids seem to very very spoiled & have a entitlement outlook on life.... Yes of course we do not want to live that way, But there are many school in other counties that are HUTS, Never mind not having AC its 90-100Degress every day, the classrooms are packed becaues the children want to learn & realize how importent a Education is & take every bit of information that they can.... Some inner City people that I know, that grew up in really tough areas with every disadvantage possible, seem to be some of the smartest people I know & can handle any situcation that comes there way " make the best of what ya got" & stop crying wining & raising a bunch of intitled wimpy kids...
