Pedestrian Dies After Hopping Barrier, Being Struck on Brick Blvd.
Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Officer on site
A pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday night near the intersection of Cedar Bridge Avenue and Brick Boulevard.
The accident took place at approximately 7:40 p.m., police said.
Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian said a man estimated to be in his mid 40s – who has not yet been identified – hopped over the concrete 'Jersey' barrier 30 feet south of the intersection.
At that time, Charles J. Gardner, 42, of Brick, was travelling southbound on Brick Boulevard in his 2011 Ford Escape SUV and had a green light, Bedrosian said.
The pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing, was hit soon after hopping over the barrier into a lane of traffic. The impact threw the pedestrian about 140 feet, Bedrosian said.
Gardner came to a stop about 120 feet away from the accident.
The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene, and traffic on Brick Boulevard was diverted for about two hours.
Bedrosian and Officer Scott Dierking of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation. The identity of the pedestrian and cause of the crash are still pending further investigation.
Anyone with information surrounding the crash is being asked to contact the Traffic Safety Unit at 732-262-1140.

I ride a bikeand walk, cause of tickets I have in North Carolina. I never have any problems crossing anywhere around here, you have to see every car and where it is headed. I dont know how anyone can be so stupid.Even if I was drunk I could cross safely. What do some people cross without looking or what. I value my life more.. Maybe it was one of our thousands of illegal mexicans. Either way its sad..RIP..

I too was deeply saddened when I saw the distinctive shape of a body lying on Brick Blvd. I was shaken and immediately thought of the poor families and friends. Brick Blvd is NOt a playground people. You have to cross at crosswalks and wear bright clothing. Just heartbreaking.

I walked my dog passed to see what happened and I saw a cloth covered body with a lot of police activity. An employee in Boston market was in tears, god rest their soul. They must have tried to hop the center divide to save time crossing because of the cold. Lots of people do this it's very dangerous. I feel terrible for the family so close to christmas . Pray for them and rip.

So Brick Blvd is at least 7 lanes wide in front of Boston Market. Sorry for the lost, but just last week saw someone crossing Brick Blvd @ Chambers Bridge against the light and almost got hit by a pickup that I thought was going to hit me head on trying to avoid striking the jay walker. How many people have to be hit on Old Hooper, Brick Blvd, Cedar Bridge and Chambers Bridge before people learn to use the crosswalks and walk and don't walk signs? Yes somebody stupid is dead and their family is devasated, but what about the person that struck them and his/her family.
Prays go out to all.

Wow, what a horrible comment. To call someone who just lost their life "stupid" is about as low as it gets. You were not there. You do not know what happened. The article gives no details. Sure, maybe the person was crossing not at the corner ....but what if the driver was at fault. They could have been speeding, texting, maybe they ran the light. The point is that no info has been published about what caused it, and even if the victim was solely at fault....it is incredibly disrespectful to call them stupid. What if their family reads this. Some comments are better left in your own head.

You feel a comment is "horrible" and then you reply with your own horrible comment trying to blame the driver that struck the pedestrian. Did you not read the article? Sgt. Dave Bedrosian said that the driver had a green light. The victim was in dark clothing and jumped over a divider into the path of the vehicle. The driver has to now live with this horrific image, so it is incredibly disrespectful to attempt to blame the driver or even imply it as an investigation continues - Some comments are better left in your own head.

Please do heed the lesson here folks. I myself was involved in a near miss with a pedestrian who I believe was texting while stepping out into traffic flow. Fortunately no major incident ocurred. Both drivers and pedestrians need to be attentive and exercise precaution. This accident is a horrible thing. I pray for all of those involved.

Even if it was his fault, there is no reason to speak ill of someone who just died. He made a foolish mistake to cross there, which cost him his life....I don't think its appropriate to trash the person with some of these comments.

Yes he lost his life because he was stupid.
He also changed the life of someone else who has to live with this forever because this pedestrian was stupid and too lazy to use a traffic light to cross.
Enjoy your Christmas, I am certain it will not be a good one for this poor driver. Happy Lawsuit to you and too all a good night for our country.

KO now I’m going to be called a racist and a bigot, but here goes anyway most of the time the people jumping the divider are from south of the border, and a comment was made by others here I too saw a mother and children jumping the divider and they were from south of the border, as was the kid on the bike last year at that same intersection.
Sorry but I have no sympathy when people bring on and cause their own tragedies.

You know, the odds are in this area that it's probably true. I'm not a racist or prejudice by any means. However, what it comes down to is the fact that we have large, super busy, roads here. Naturally, if the the traffic laws are not respected, bad things happen. Then, the people that make these stupid decisions and get killed give their families a tragedy to live with for the rest of their lives as well.
If before making a foolish decision, people would think about consequences and how it could effect their families, friends, etc if something went bad or tragically wrong, maybe they would think harder. That's the thing today. PEOPLE DON'T THINK HARD ENOUGH!! Many drive too fast, too close, and recklessly. Many take up daredevil sports or do stupid stunts. Some don't bother to think about things like crossing at a crosswalk or walking a bike across the road. It's things like this that not too many think about being dangerous or potentially fatal until something happens...

People do dangerous things in their everyday life all the time. Poor judgement does not mean you deserve to die. To those of you making negative comments about the victim, can you actually look in the mirror and tell yourself that you have never taken a foolish risk or have done something in a split second decision that in hindsight was a poor choice. If you can, you are lying to yourself.

Thank you, Will. My father was in public works for 35 years. During that time, through his experiences, I learned about the really crazy stuff and horrible decisions people made when he was on emergency calls and supporting police, fire, and EMS. A lot of the times, the wreckage or debris from their decisions annd actions were parked in the DPW lot. He was also a biker and would see the things people would do on the road. I learned a ton of life lessons from him. I got to see lots more with my involvement with emergency services. Naturally, as someone who is a law abiding citizen and a representative of emergency services myself, I think very carefully of my actions. I just wish more people thought harder about their decisions and actions. No stupid jokes, offensive comments...just the truth.

You people make me sick, talking ill over someone who lost there life. How would you feel if someone talked ill over someone you knew that died! Have respect you idiots.

Of course this is a tragedy, but it is one that could have been prevented.
If pedestrian was in the cross walk, and the driver had driven illegally (such as running the red light) and killed the pedestrian, there would be a flood comments calling the driver negative names.
In this case, the pedestrian chose to take an illegal action that is illegal BECAUSE it puts them in the path of oncoming traffic. So the pedestrian was either careless, because they knew the risk and took it anyway...or not very bright because they didn't understand the risk involved in their action.
Either way, their decision to ignore safety laws resulted in a third party having their death on their hands. The driver will be haunted by this forever. This all could have been avoided if the pedestrian had not made such a terrible choice. That choice can justifiably be considered a stupid choice.

The person getiing killed is tragic but I feel for the poor driver and the family of the deceased. That poor man will always second guess himself with the "What if I done this instead" scenarios. He will need help in getting over the guilt. To Mr. Gardner: "It wasn't your fault". No one can foresee ALL of the actions of others. Let's be thankful that no one else was injured or killed if he had performed an impossible evasive action in order to avoid hitting this poor pedestrian. People make mistakes every day. Some are minor, some major, some fatal. It's called "LIFE" and we all live it every day. This reminder, think about your actions, they ALL have consequences.

It amazes me how people come on this site and blabber about tragedies and how each person who died has done wrong. Do we really need these comments? Are there really that many heartless souls who feel justified in pontificating about people when tragedy strikes? No s$&t this poor guy shouldn't have jumped over a median into traffic, he paid the price with his life and also I am sure impacted the person who hit him forever as well. For all of you jerks who feel the need to preach I offer Karma is out there and might serve you better to just offer your sadness and prayers to lives forever impacted. I guess for some there is some sick power feeding element behind talking crap about people on forums. I hope you don't reap the consequences of your cruel and insensitive comments some day.
