Pedestrian Airlifted After Being Struck on Drum Point Road
Toms River man struck while crossing Cherry Quay Road intersection
A Toms River man was injured after being hit by a car while walking along Drum Point Road Sunday night.
Brick Police Ptl. Scott Dierking said Durrell L. Warford, 30, was attempting to cross Cherry Quay Road while walking east on Drum Point Road when he was struck by a 2003 Ford Focus being driven by Casey F. Russo, 18, of Brick.
The accident occurred at 10:58 p.m. Sunday.
Dierking said in a prepared statement that Warford was in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection when he was struck by Russo, who was attempting to make a left turn from the westbound lane of Drum Point onto the southbound lane of Cherry Quay.
The impact of the accident sent Warford into the northbound lane of Cherry Quay. The car came to rest on the shoulder of Cherry Quay.
Warford was taken by state police medevac helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for treatment of head trauma and possible internal injuries.
Brick Police Ptl. Miller and Ptl. Lardieri were first arriving units on the scene. Brick Volunteer EMS and MONOC paramedics also responded, along with members of the Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose fire companies.
Ptl. Jay Lampiasi and Dierking of the police department's Traffic Safety Unit are investigating the crash. Detective Waldhelm of the Brick Township Police ID Unit responded to photograph the scene.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is being asked to contact the Traffic Safety Unit at 732-262-1140.

Slow down! Pay attention! These roads around Brick neighborhoods are narrow, and we have a lot of 'walkers', including many pushing baby strollers & walking with young children in tow. It's a horrible tragedy waiting to happen. Killing someone is not worth the extra minute you save in driving carelessly and/or too fast! I pray to God this man pulls through ok.

Not for nothing but...It was 10:58 at night! Was the Toms River man struck wearing dark colors?? Maybe the driver didn't see him until it was too late. Though I do feel for the young man who was hit...and pray to God he pulls through this...you can't always assume the driver was 100% at fault. Pedestrians are constantly not obeying the laws either and often cross without looking to see if it’s safe. The whole scenario is tragic

@ Kim, you are spot on, and I agree with everything you just said. Another issue is the simple ordinance that is not enforced by the township unless someone calls them is the problem that homeowners do not keep clear their easment from property lines to curb. People have planted trees/tall shrubs, fail to maintain these areas, causing people to HAVE to walk on the shoulder of the roads. It is my understanding that the twp, once they send a letter to any homeowner, they have approx 10 days to clean up their area. The twp can fine that homeowner if they refuse to clean up their areas and it can be pretty steep. That being said, I am sure the 18 year old is extremely upset, or at least should be. The pedestrian, I am praying that he pulls thru, too.
yeah, okay

Before you accuse the person walking, you may want to find out more about the driver. My two sons know the kids who hit the man. He has a car that has blacked out lights, tinted windows and he's known to drive very fast. Even if the man was watching, he may not have stood a chance against a car that racing with dimmed lights.

There are many areas that roads don't have shoulders or sidewalks.
Yet, I see walkers and bike riders.... easy to get hit as they are walking or riding on the wrong side to boot as well as wearing dark clothing. You see this a lot if you drive through Lakewood (New Hampshire Ave). There were many very close to getting hit!!! Not enough street lights coupled with dark clothing is hard to see even going the speed limit. You don't expect it.
I call 911 and report to the police to give a ticket or summons to the bike rider and/or walker. Typically it is a bike rider and they have rules they have to follow.

I live in Cherry Quay for twenty years.Ther have been increased problems on Cherry Quay Road over the last several years. The problem is not what people are wearing. The problem is texting and speeding. There is no specific age on the individuals who are commiting these horrible and sometimes fatal actions. We as a community are horrified. Step up and drive responsible. Prayers to the man from Toms River.

You are so right Sharon. All of Brick has become a major problem with driving. Yesterday, I was driving down Beaverson Blvd. at 9:30 am and a senior citizen came into my southbound lane from the north lane. He realized and went back. That could have been a head on collision. Between the texting, talking, drugs and seniors, Brick is not a nice place anymore.

Really....it doesn't matter what the pedestrain was wearing... the Driver how ever old should always have their eye on the road and everywhere else when driving. Sorry, sometimes you don't see it till its too late but if you are going the speed limit while truning do you think there would have been such serious injuries.? Curious to know if the drivers cell phone was checked for activity at the time of the accident. Prayers for the pedestrain.

Did the police issue a summons? Seems to me that the driver didn't know to yeild to someone IN THE CROSSWALK. It's the LAW. Wearing dark clothing and walking at night is dangerous, but so are young children driving cars.

I wish the person has a speedy recovery! Not enough information to say who's to blame. Yes, alot of walkers/bikers wear black clothes and some of them even walk too close to traffic! And yes, it was an 18 yr old female who could of been on a cell and/or speeding. In this case I would want to know what was the walker wearing, was the driver's phone checked, and WHY was a 30 yr old male walking this late at night on Drum Point Rd when he lives in Toms River????? Here's a test for everyone...next time you are out driving, see how many accidents YOU are ALMOST in due to some idiot who's either on a cell, doesn't do the speed limit, or is in such a rush to get wear they're going!! I lost count how many I would of been in!

Everyone walking that late at night in a seperate town is up to no good. you never know, he could have been wearing dark clothes, and its impossible for casey to use his phone while driving because his car has a stick shift and he needs both hands and feet to drive. stop jumping to conclusions until the real story is told. your all like a bunch of wild animals.

Impossible to use his cell phone??? I see people driving all of the time with their cell phone between their shoulder and their ear while driving, so they can smoke, and drink their coffee too. As far as I know people are allowed to walk anywhere at any time. I would like to know....what is a "separate town"?

It doesn't matter what one wears at night? Who said that? Really? It's been awhile since a young person was hit on Jordan Road and unfortunately lost his life, yeah I know there were other circumstances BUT you would think the kids that live in the Midstreams area would have learned from that horrible lesson. The kids are still longboarding/skateboarding on Jordan, late at night with dark clothing on. The other night I was walking my dog on Jordan using what little sidewalk there is on that road, when I heard a sound, I knew that sound, it was either a skateboard or a longboard coming down the road, I couldn't see it, but I could hear it. Sure enough this kid around 16 goes whizzing by me, half on the shoulder and half on the road itself with dark clothing and a hoodie on covering his head. I didn't see him until he was right by me, how could someone in a car see that? You parents that live in the Midstreams/Jordan road areas should be paying more attention to what your kids are doing, I don't think we need another memorial on Jordan or any other road in this area. It's heartbreaking.

What would you have liked the kid on his skateboard to do, stay behind you? You would complain about that! He had to go off the sidewalk to get past you, so what! Who cares what he was wearing, no bearing on anything, If he had on shorts and a t-shirt you would complain! Of course you didnt see him you dont have headlights on your head, cars do! Dont start picking on kids and their parents because an accident happened in town. This is a tragedy, one that could or could not have been avoided. Regardless of anything everyone should be praying for the mans recovery, not blaming him for wearing dark clothes, being black, walking in brick when he lives in toms river.... for this child who hit him to be able to overcome the mental stress he will have to live with for the rest of his life, not his car being black with tinted windows, he was on his cell, going to fast. Nobody knows what happened except the driver, and the man walking. Right about now I can put money on it that neither one of them know either!

That entrance to Cherry Quay is a disaster. Making a right off of Drum Point, you can't see around that Tree right along side the road and there is NO sidewalk to walk on, so people have to step onto the street to go around it. I lived in Cherry Quay for 26 years and that road is a death trap. I hope this guy is alright, and I hate to break it to the teenage girls defending this kid, but the guy was in a crosswalk, it's 100% Casey's fault no matter what Durrell was wearing or what color his skin was. I think you guys should spend less time defending Casey and more time in English class, because your grammar is an embarrassment. Nothing says "Future Petroleum Transfer Technician" like being unable to write a grammatically correct sentence. BTHS should be ashamed.

And by the way, it's a well known fact that this kid drives and acts like an idiot. As soon I read the article I said "I bet it's the kid with the black hatchback" Lo and Behold, I was right. Honestly who cares what the guy had on or what color he is. He is a human being and that is all that matters is if he will be ok or not. By commenting on his race it just shows what type of person you are. And for the people that say you drive with Casey and he is a good driver how old are you 18 too!!! I have one question why did they tow Casey's car away? And if it was Casey that was walking and he got hit would you think he was in the right?

Feel very bad for the victim, hope he is ok. From what I am reading this Casey sounds like a careless driver. I see young kids all the time driving like idiots. They won't learn until they kill someone. I am a very careful driver, yea, i am old, i am 57. Once on Rt. 571 before Rt. 70 a young man crossed in the middle of the road and was wearing all black, luckily, i did not hit him. Two lessons to be learned here: if you are walking at night, wear light clothing or reflective gear of some kind. 2) if you a hopped up young person who wants to be cool and drive really fast and weave in and out of everyone and soup up your engine, and blast those speakers, knock it off. If you value your drivers license and want to keep it, you gotta stop driving like show offs.....just saying.

Anthony,
Well said as I would expect a mature person to respond. Not looking for a great deal of mouth from you smart kids. I live here. Just pay attention and realize a person is hurt. It does not make a difference what color his skin was. Pure ignorane. I do not care who was in the car with Casey. I dont care who was behind him. I do not give a crap what he had for lunch. Durrell Has serious injuries. You can be of color and live in this town. It is legal. Your simple minded comments really are sad.

It does in fact matter what he was wearing and what color he was.. for this very purpose the folks in Lakewood wear the safety reflective strap.. They wear dark clothes and walk on streets with no sidewalks. The lighting situation is poor, this is not an invitation to go and install super bright lights on all the streets, so both the driver and pedestrian should have been taking the needed precautions. Look before crossing, listen for oncoming cars if there is a bend in the road.. as a driver be cautious for folks on the sides of the road especially around cross walks.

My son said he does not even stop for oncoming cars in the school parking lot, ask any senior that drives to BTHS and 90% of them will say he has almost hit them in the parking lot before or after school. It is a shame that it had come to this and my best wishes are for the victim, as for the driver well I hope something is done so the rest of brick towns citizens are safe walking our own streets.
