The township planning board has approved an application by Joe's Crab Shack to open a restaurant in Brick Plaza.
The application was approved last week.
The 8,600 square foot restaurant will be located where the former FedEx-Kinko's store was located in the rear of the plaza in a stand-alone building, said Township Planner Mike Fowler. The building that formerly housed FedEx-Kinko's will be demolished, Fowler said.
The restaurant will be similar to the Joe's Crab Shack location near the Monmouth Mall, said Fowler. The restaurant will feature, in addition to its indoor dining room, an outdoor "pirate ship" themed play area for kids.
"They have them in most of their restaurants," said Fowler.
The restaurant will be about 2,000 square feet larger than the building it is replacing.
Joe's Crab Shack is a franchised, chain seafood restaurant that specializes in shellfish dishes, fresh seafood and its signature "steam pots."
There are 127 Joe Crab's Shack locations nationwide. The Brick location will be the chain's fifth in New Jersey. Other restaurants are located in Eatontown, Lawrenceville, Clifton and South Plainfield.

Stephen -- White Castle has had an interest in opening a location in Brick. Every once in a while they pop up on a planning board agenda, but they usually postpone their hearing. Not sure what's up, but eventually we could have one in town.

Chickentown? I'd have to say go to Chicken and the sea if you want ribs or chicken. They have a much larger menu and I think their food is much better, the quality and freshness can't be beat. They have a lot of good loyalty rewards and specials too. Always a good deal and an excellent meal!

Please don't say it's going to be a Sonic, the one below Lacey Twp is AWFUL. I had heard so many great things about Sonic and then I went to the one down there and have been there three times and it was garbage. I usually give a place three chances before I write it off. I will never waste my money there again!

I am writing this to express my feelings on yet another new eatery in Brick. Our local government in Brick does not care about the long term local businesses in this town. Why are we putting so many restaurant establishments here in Brick? The impact that these super large franchise conglomerates have on the small eateries in Brick is astronomical, how many will close with 3 new corporate restaurant giants on our back door!
Our local government may indeed be creating 40 or so new part-time jobs but the implications will result in more jobs lost in the private restaurant sector to yet another big chain, loose tax dollars as no one will open the small eateries and current retail/restaurant space in the area will remain vacant. Not to mention how many local persons do in fact own the small rental spaces in Brick that will sit baron, make another eye sore in brick and possible go into foreclosure.
Wake up Brick, we have more eateries per capita than Toms River, which is a larger population. Let’s go back to the days when people really helped people and gave a damn about community.

Donna - Beyond ensuring the physical building in which a business is located meets zoning and land use laws, the local government really has little-to-nothing to do with what businesses open in town.
The local municipal government (or planning board/zoning board) really can't micromanage the ratio of chains to locally-owned dining establishments. I think, sometimes, people have the impression that planning boards get to pick and choose which businesses get approval to open in town, however this is not the case.

There no reason why the big places and the mom and pops can't coincide together because, if you have great food and decent prices people will go to either. For example I have discovered the hamburgers and fries at Cervones Pizza on Rt 88. Go compare their burger for $4.99 against McDonalds if your in for a fast burger, there is no comparison! You get a burger and fries for $4.99 as Cervones that's just not the burger price like McD's. Cervones burger is very large and a good helping of fries compared to that measly piece of crap McD's is serving and Cervones is done over a grill that gives it that backyard BBQ taste. It would take at least 4 or 5 pattys from McD's to make one Cervone burger. Now say you just have that hankering for a bunch of fries, that's when you head over to Tony's Pizza on RT88, their fries beat Cervones and McD's, in fact their fries remind me of McD's when McD's had good fries. Then there's the little breakfast/lunch place on 88 that has cars parked all the way down the side street as their parking lot is usually full, I forget the name of it, it's packed like sardines almost everyday, and has really good food. Of course there"s the grand daddy of them all, The Rainbow, great food, great service, great prices and hard to get in to at times. All these places are owned by local people. How about In and Go on Midstreams Place for subs! Sorry Jersey Mikes, but they make subs like you used to.

Re: Planning Boards. They DO have the option and responsibility to make sure a building is in keeping with the overall tone of a given town. Our planning board was clearly asleep when they approved Auto Zone. Auto Zone was refused a license to operate in Connecticut based on their failure to keep in harmony with the existing town structures. Google it if you like. Let's hope this new restaurant is a better neighbor than that ugly orange box Auto Zone that I will never miss an opportunity to rag on.

Donna
2:19 pm on Thursday, October 4, 2012
Competition is very..very.. good! but not when you over saturate an area, there are more restaurant establishments looking to make a name in Brick, when is it enough? Local Small business re-invest their money in the community. Large corporate restaurants take their profits to their corporate headquarters, out of state usually. Lets concentrate on business that is good for our youth and families, we could use a roller skating rink, another grocery store like "Wegmans", a theatre (like the strand) an indoor sports complex would be wonderful for the youth of Brick. Brick has no cultural arts center or culture for that matter. Put your thinking caps on and look for Business that would promote Brick, entertain our community and make Brick something to be proud off rather than a town full of strip centers with Corporate Giant Restaurants.

We had an opportunity to have a Strand like theater in this town and the opportunity was blown. The Strand is a grand old theater built in the 20's and at first was not a movie theater but a vaudeville/stage show theater only, it was actually a theater where they tried out Broadway shows before they opened on Broadway (Jerry Lewis worked at the Strand way back when), the movies were added later as were the screen, pipe organ and the projector to show silent films. Building something like that in Brick would cost millions that we don't have, BUT the old Brick Plaza theater, the original movie theater in Brick, was built to have mini stage shows but none were ever done that I know of. There was a small stage and fly loft behind the screen which could have been expanded, if I remember right it sat almost 2,000 people before it was twinned. It would have been perfect for a cultural center and would have cost less than building a whole new place, we TRIED in vain to save the place, but greed does things to people and we met with the owner to try and persuade him to save the building, and the answer was a big NO, (actually he was one of the biggest dicks I've ever met in my life) Town hall wasn't interested either, it sure would have made a nicer cultural center than that piece of crap place they have now on Chamberbridge. Typical Brick!

. . . yet there is not one good pizzeria in Brick. They all have the same pizzeria-style american pizza that you can get anywhere. There isn't one place that makes a good Chicago-style pizza, or a thin crust like Pete and Elda's.
I can't fault the chain restaurants though, it seems that overtime a 'mom and pop' opens up nobody goes and it goes out of business. These big chains wouldn't open if people weren't going.

Speaking of head shops and Chicken Town, there is now a place next to Chicken Town called "The Happy Hut Tobacco Shop". Where is the Patch article announcing that arrival?
You can't make this stuff up. That spot went from a puppy concentration camp to a "Happy Hut", conveniently placed next to a fried chicken joint. No pun intended.

The older generation still know and frequent mom & pop eateries. You get a better meal, home made food not food in a bag or box, and a better value. The younger generations do not know about mom & pop places. The know what they see on the television. But you are right about Pete & elda's, we go there all the time! and this too is a Mom & Pop.

5:46 pm on Thursday, October 4, 2012
I believe one of the other patch.com town websites had an article which talked about how a lot of long time 'mom and pop' eateries were closing down, even though they were successful, because the owners children did not want to run a restaurant or store and work long hours like their parents did. So many good restaurants have closed in the past 15 years around here . . .

I just ate there last night in eatontown. Friendly staff, nice bar but I'd rather eat the fish sandwich from McDonald's than eat there. Wings are wings but getting quality seafood means no chain restaurants.

your right, what about all the new traffic? we have terrible traffic patterns as it is, from lack of planning back in the day when Brick was rural. I think taxes will rise to compensate for more road work to compensate for the influx and wear and tear.
I think too if your coming to Brick to have a meal you will spend money in that establishment and probably go home, so the only revenue gained will be for that particular establishment and then of course the state sales tax. Doesn't help us in Brick, does it?

Donna- should we close down the movie theater since its owned by Loews? This is by far, the dumbest comment posted. When I take my family out, we eat dinner then maybe hit a movie and get dessert after. I support 3 places in one outing. The places gain revenue, employing all those people and then those places pay money in taxes which the town gains revenue from. Small minded people like you should buy frozen dinners, stay him and eat them in front of the TV and wish to bring back the "good old days."
