More Red Light Cams Could Be Coming to Brick

Traffic safety officers currently researching new intersections, official say

Additional township intersections could be outfitted with red light violation cameras, officials said Tuesday.

Traffic safety officers have started the process of researching new, potential locations where cameras could be installed. The automated red light cams snap a photograph of drivers who run red lights, then mail them traffic tickets. The tickets are not considered moving violations and carry no points, however.

Brick currently has two intersections outfitted with cameras: the intersection of Chambers Bridge Road and Route 70, and the intersection of Chambers Bridge and Brick Boulevard.

Business Administrator Scott Pezarras said Tuesday that the township is currently looking into selecting additional intersections where cameras could be installed. Brick is one of a few towns statewide that is participating in a pilot program that may eventually lead to the legalization of red light cams statewide, and would need permission from the state before new cameras could be installed, he said. Once data is collected on factors such as  accident statistics, the township can put together an application package that will be sent to the state Department of Transportation.

Officials would not say which, if any, intersections were currently being considered for red light cam outfitting. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said the process of selecting intersections and putting together an application to forward to the state could take several months.

The cameras at the two intersections currently outfitted with red light cams generate between 700 and 800 tickets per month, on average, worth $85 each Pezarras said.
