Man Shot at Birthday Party In Toms River

Man wounded at 21-year-old's party on Gilford Avenue

A 21-year-old's birthday party ended in gunfire Friday night at a home in Gilford Avenue, police said.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a shooting at a Gilford Avenue home left one young male wounded. He was transported to Jersey Shore Trauma Center by helicopter after 11:30 p.m.

On Saturday morning, police remained at the home as the investigation continued. Gilford Avenue was closed to traffic at Adams Avenue while the investigation continued.

The Gilford Avenue neighbors flooded police headquarters with calls after hearing gunshots fired, Mastronardy said.

"Toms River police received several calls reference the shooting from neighbors," said Mastronardy in an email.

The shots came from a home where a crowd of people were partying, celebrating a 21-year-old's birthday, Mastronardy said.

"Numerous people were attending a 21-year old's birthday party when the shooting erupted," the police chief said. "The victim ran to a neighbor's home looking for help."

The victim's name has not been released. No information is available on possible arrests in this developing investigation.

The Ocean County Prosecutors Office and Toms River Police are investigating.

That's where EVERYONE here is from. The New Yorkers are the rudest, the PA ones can't drive and the slum kids need to go back to Newark and Elizabeth.
I've lived her for 35 years, born in NJ. I never had to lock my doors, now there are druggies all over and I blame the welfare dept. for putting disreputable people in rental homes in suburban neighborhoods. Also, we do not want trailer parks or drug motels, thanks Rt. 37 East!

Me too barbara. I live in Bayshore, and sadly, with the bad housing situation, a lot of the houses are now rentals and bringing in a very bad element, drugs and a lot of roving kids. Lock your doors! Ps. renters run your property into ruins as well!

i don't get it??

9:11 am on Saturday, June 30, 2012

OK, So I just watched that YouTube video...its...well...sad. First, all of Gilford Park is not like they want you to think. Second, it tries to make it sound like Camden, or Newark. And third, its just sad...sad that in residential neighborhoods, people can't feel safe in their own homes when "kids" are having a party...so now what, every time my teenager asks to go to a friends house for the night we should second guess ourselves as parents just so our kids don't get put on the line of fire..? Really Really Sad.
Hope the young man recovers.

I was born and raised in Toms River and to see what this town, all areas of TR has become is disgusting. Most of the crimes, shootings, robberies etc. are all related to people from out of the area. "North Jersey People" They have runied this town. How sad is that!!!! You can always spot someone who is not a local. Just look at them, the way they talk, their clothes, their rudeness.

Give it a rest. All of my kids were born and raised in TR. My parents moved us here in the mid 60's from " Up North" to get us away from the pending riots way back then. I have been here 45 years from up North and from my observation the recent folks moving here from up North are a bit different from when we came here back in the 60's.

Wow! You all need to wake up! First off the issue isn't Gilford Park. In this case, it's guns.
Second Gilford park is not all section 8 housing. Lived here 32 years, own the property and all of my neighbors have been here for years, and they own there property too. It's quiet and peaceful on my street. 85% of Gilford Park residents own and have resided hear a long time.
There is guns, drugs, and scum in every town in every state across the country.
I wonder if the shooter turns out to be from Silverton or Vincenzo Drive what u would all have to say then!

This could've happened the other night when a party with 100+ kids near Yellowbank were out of control. What parent in their right mind would go to Las Vegas and leave a 19 & 17 year old in charge. Alot of pot and beer. What did the cops do? Shoo'ed off a bunch of drunken teens into their cars to leave, DRIVING DRUNK. Lazy cops who didn't want to be stuck doing paperwork all night.

everyone has an opinion so heres what i know the family that had the party bought the land and built the house about 10 years ago and being their neighbors for as long as they have lived here i can say the family are not "scum bags" they told us the day before they planned on having a party and it would be loud. 9pm there was only about 1/2 dozen people and by 11 well over 80 people. i didnt recognize any of them as people that commonly come over. we heard the gun shots starting about 11:10 about 3 shots then another 3 shots a few mins later and about 11:30 3 shot followed by 2 or 3 shots. we thought maybe fire works at first and the last burst the kids started to duck and run down the street. there was alot of yelling before the last burst of shots. we called 911 cops showed up arressed someone and atleast one person was taken away in an ambulance. cops stayed all night.... search my neighbors house . tore it all apart and didnt find anything. (according to the home owner) im certain this trouble was brought to my street (gilford ave where we have lived for 33yrs with no trouble) by kids from the surrounding area. there were alot of people that we have never seen before. also im a registered LEGAL gun owner and did not retrieve my gun after shots were fired. we called 911 guns are not the problem a few bad apples spoil the bunch. i suggest reading the armed citizen

Seriously?

9:11 am on Sunday, July 1, 2012

Why would a family allow a party to accelerate from a dozen people at 9 pm to well over 80 people by 11?

Possible answer: Facebook. People set up party pages on Facebook and ask friends to indicate "attending/not attending/unsure", which then shows up on their feed for the whole world to see. The whole world then says "hey, sounds great, I'm going too." And when the whole world shows up, lots of trouble starts.

That party should have been slowing down at 11 pm, not accelerating. Toms River has a 11 pm noise ordinance that is enforced when the cops are called.

This town was a nice quiet place to live until the last three or four years or so. The gang-banging element is slowly moving in, starting with the apartment complexes on 166 and continuing all over town, not just Gilford Park and parts of Windsor Park.

My children are respectful because they know I would kick their arses if they weren't. This was an incident that is all. Some people on this board blame everything bad that happens on people moving here from other places, and THEY are generalizing people from "up north" as the ones that bring trouble. Terrible things happen everywhere and bad people come from all over, even toms river... Being a toms river minor, even if you're not one of the bad kids, I'm sure you know of some that are not from " up north"

All the bickering back and forth is hilarious, focus on the poor kid who got shot, not over who's right and who's wrong, lol, quick question, how come some comments are indented and how do u leave a comment to someone else's comment ?

I'm a local, born and raised, and you know what...there are plenty of local kids who are into all kinds of stuff....drugs, guns, etc. Sure, some of the stereotypes about people from north jersey are true....but it is so ignorant to claim that everyone from out of town is a certain way. Just as ignorant as it is to act like locals don't cause any of these problems.

RIP Kevin , and I hope Kevin # 2 recovers. These are all kids , they are someones child , brother , cousin , friend as as such are in the " Rough Years" WE all went through , as OUR parents told all of us, choose your friends wisely as they will drag you down with them ! We all make choices that MAY effect us for life or sometimes life changers , as in this case...Sad but true , this will take place again with "Party Crashes" of uninvited Guests , word gets out REAL fast with these cell phones ! Again RIP young man.

It just makes me upset that people wanna bash a place they see, but no nothing about. There are many beautiful houses in gilford park. A child is dead, a friend, a son, a brother, the apple of someones eye. Please have a heart.

I've learned from the Asbury Park Press that the stabbing took place two hours later at another location. Here's what it says:
The initial investigation is that the victim was stabbed at an undisclosed apartment complex. The two incidents are being investigated by Toms River Police Patrolman Patrick Jacques and Sgt. Carlos Trujillo Tovar of the prosecutors office, said Michel A. Paulhus, executive assistant Ocean County prosecutor. It is unknown at this time if the stabbing is related to the shooting, Mastronardy said. Anyone with information is asked Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027 or Toms River Police at 732-349-0150.

Anyone who leaves their own home with a gun or knife is trouble. I'm just saying...

The stabbing and shooting were two different parties/places... I'm not sure of both peoples names... But the one young man who has passed from the stabbing, his name is Kevin C. He was a very good friend of my husbands, and family of ours! May he rest in peace! As far as the young man who was shot I can't say because I don't know the details on that.
