Man Atop Seaside Heights Roller Coaster A "Daredevil," Reports Say
Christopher Angulo was charged with criminal trespassing after he unfurled an American flag while atop the roller coaster
A 38-year-old man who climbed the Seaside Heights roller coaster that Hurricane Sandy swept into the Atlantic Ocean described his actions as "an act of patriotism," WNBC-TV has reported.
Christopher Angulo was charged with criminal trespassing after he unfurled an American flag while atop the roller coaster, and then was coaxed down, according to news reports.
Angulo used a canoe to reach the ride, had three duffel bags full of food and clothing with him and told investigators he "did it for America," according to WNBC-TV.
Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd also told NBC Channel 4 that Angulo has had previous "run-ins" with the law.
His mother told News 12 he lives at his grandmother's home in Lavallette and that her son is a bit of a "daredevil."
Boyd said Angulo would be given a psychiatric evaluation, according to news reports.
A man who stood atop the wreckage of the water-drenched roller coaster near the Casino Pier in Seaside Heights Tuesday is now in police custody.
The man, identified as 38-year-old Chris Angulo of Lavallette, climbed aboard the ruins of the Jet Star roller coaster in an effort to call attention to Sandy recovery, according to News12.
State police and local authorities worked earlier Tuesday morning to get the man off the wreckage.

It certainly was an act of patrioism! Hope they don't keep him in jail after the evaluation. Thankfully, he was not hurt, just trying to make a statement.

At a time when people are expressing their anger, frustration, disgust, disappointment etc. by picking up an assault weapon, I consider this physical demonstration of will and determination to be a productive way to attract attention. Maybe it's just part of the new normal...

Why do we care when people do these things. Why the response and helicopters and tax money wasted. Let him climb it, if he falls and dies so what, he will wash up like they all do. If he cams out up there so what, that's his problem.
These things only become a circus because we make them a circus.

I have to agree the media must really be slow if you send the helicopter to follow the truck that took him to jail OJ style and with a added bonus of live on the phone with his mother while they do play by play . Think they held off getting him till the helo got there . LOLO

would someone please sensationalize the insurance companies who are trying to withhold funds from their clients to rebuild their homes. I have been trying to get this publicized and have even sent an email to Governor Christie's office. Sure this guy did a really foolish thing. However, if we part time residents, who pay full time taxes and insurance premiums, there will be the domino effect in reduction of revenue for beach communities. Please can't someone put some pressure on these insurance companies who are being so unfair.

488,191 have been filed — "eclipsing" the number reported after Tropical Storm Irene. His department received 1,955 claims by phone after Sandy, while tropical storms Irene and Lee led to a combined 590 claims called in. Nj.com source

I find it quite odd that despite the article written paraphrased WNBC in New York the link at the bottom directs you to the NBC affiliate in BOSTON....
A plus to all of this is that Reid Lamberty(NJ native and former anchor at Fox 5 in New York back in the late 2000s) covered the story!

Have you noticed that since 9/11 that nobody can do nothing anymore without getting charged with something? Years ago, this story would be lucky to hit The Observer on a slow news day and the cops would have just told him to get the F off the thing. I really think the terrorists won. ya can't even fart anymore without a charge attached to it.

wookfish...look douche Don't worry, I would be afraid to call 911 down in this area. I would rather take my chances driving up north and die in the process than to deal with a bunch of goobers that were given their job by default.

What did the cops do to these people in the 50's. Did we waste money on Coast Guard boats and police boats heading out to save a man doing something all be it stupid on his own volition.
Leave him be and forget about it, then nobody else will copy cat him

I just think that whole situation is pathetic. The only point that guy made was that he was just another jackass pulling another stupid stunt. Here's the thing that many people didn't think about...if he got hurt doing this stupid stunt, there were be a lawsuit and WE would all end up paying for it!! Let him go though the process and be an example.

Rick Ricky I totally agree, if you were to put most of these cops in a real city they wouldn't know what to do. A few years back in Surf City on LBI a woman died in her apt and started decomposing, the two cops who found her have been on disability ever since because they couldn't handle it. Seriously what about real cops who have to see death everyday, isn't that part of the job? But now the taxpayers are stuck paying disability for two guys who shouldn't have been cops if they couldn't handle seeing death.

Cindy Williams....That is just the two that you know. You know how many more cases and problems there is with these half of a pea brain goober cops down in these shore communities. Most of them are not stable and should be rechecked and evaluated. The problem is most are hired from their family and friends. They should get rid of every one of them. They just are not stable. I ran in to a cop in pt. pleasant that was directing traffic during the sandy crises. These were residents on line getting gasoline for their generators and cars. The cop was out of control, He was so hyper and wrapped way to tight. It was like he was on cocaine. These cops need to be checked for drugs and alcohol. I guess there is not much else to do down in the beach area. Get real cops in from up north that will work for a lot less with more brains that could stomach real crime. The residents of NJ gets stuck paying for all these cops who are out, or teachers that can't be put in a classrooms. Our governor needs to start making up some new rules. Let's dismantle the Unions, start over with realistic rules in more ways than one.
