Library Foundation Donates $110K for Brick Branch Project
Library due to reopen soon following renovations
The Ocean County Library Foundation recently authorized a gift of $110,000 to be put towards the ongoing renovations at the county library system's Brick branch.
The $1.2 million renovation project will allow the branch to accommodate more users and enhance operations, officials have said. The library has been closed since June 1, but is expected to reopen soon.
The foundation's donation will help underwrite the renovations to the branch, where the interior has been redesigned to increase floor space by approximately 3,000 square feet.
The foundation announced the gift at the Ocean County Library Commission meeting last week.
“On behalf of the Ocean County Library Commission I would like to thank the Ocean County Library Foundation for their generous donation," said commission chairman Henry J. Mancini, in a statement. "Their continued support of the Ocean County Library system is very much appreciated and an essential factor in maintaining the very best library services for the residents of Ocean County."
The renovation project will also add an additional meeting room and study spaces, a children’s story corner, an area for teens, additional computers for public use and a conference room that can be converted into a computer lab.
“The library is the heart of the community and this generous donation by the Ocean County Library Foundation will have a significant impact in providing desired community features for the Brick branch,” said Susan Quinn, Library Director, also in a prepared statement.

I don't have an exact date but it is nearing completion. We'll post notice of the specific reopening date when we have it.

Can I ask a question - why did they need to renovate the library anyway? I always thought the library was very nice. With all the talk of crime here in Brick, perhaps that money could of gone to hiring more police.

The purpose of the Library Foundation is to....get ready for it.....raise funds for the Library.
Brick can find ways to fund their own police.

RCL -- The Library Commission is its own taxing entity in Ocean County. No township money (which could have been used to hire police officers, etc.) was used for this renovation. It was a county project.
Also, cost items like renovation projects are normally funded through a separate budget than things like police salaries. It's the difference between capital budgets and operating budgets.
Regarding the need for the project: there have been studies commissioned by the county that ranked libraries in need of expansion and/or renovation. Brick was very undersized for the number of patrons it serves, according to the report. At one point, the library was going to be physically expanded, but due to the economy they scaled back the project to renovate it and add floor space without putting in additions or expanding the actual building itself.

Ok, Dan, thank you for that. I didn't know. I thought the money for libraries came from the town. "A Resident" - that is why I asked the question. If you don't know something , you ask.
