Jump From Seaside Heights Skyride Hits the Internet
Storms were brewing at the same time YouTube video was shot
A video showing a person jumping from the Skyride in Seaside Heights is making the rounds on the Internet.
The Skyride is the official name of an aerial tramway that runs about 30 feet above most of the length of the town's boardwalk. A video of a person jumping down to the beach below had more than 13,000 views Monday morning.
The video – which was shot as strong thunderstorms were beginning to roll into the area Saturday night – shows the Skyride stationary, presumably from a loss of electrical power due to the storms.
"Oh my God, look, they got stuck," shouts the person who took the video, as the camera points toward the ride.
WARNING: A person is heard using what could be considered inappropriate langage. Please be advised.
One rider, a female, drops her shoes down to the sand, then can be seen sliding off the ride and landing on the beach. The video is unclear as to whether a second passenger also jumped off, but implies that person did as well.
Officials in Seaside Heights and a representative for Casino Pier, which operates the Skyride, could not be immediately reached for comment.
A person claiming to be the jumper posted in the comments section of the YouTube video, saying she was alive, but "just sore."
The incident Saturday night is not the first time someone has taken a plunge from the Skyride. In 2010, a Milltown teen was critically injured after falling from the ride. In 1997, three people fell from the ride in a matter of four weeks.

We put calls in to the owner of the ride as well as local police. Thus far, we have not heard back from either party. If/when we do, we'll report it.

What is JSHN? I want to wish her well. I was hit by lightning in 1998 in the Costco parking lot in Brick and I think jumping was the right thing to do. I would have. When those black clouds roll in now I run like hell.

To address your statement, "... I think jumping was the right thing to do," I just want to state that no one should jump off of a chairlift unless authorities request that you do so. Jumping off a chairlift endangers the other patrons on the chairlift, because any awkward distribution of weight may result in the cables jumping the track and thus everybody would fall. This has happened on mountains out west. In cases of emergencies, there are safe methods of removing riders from the chairlift.

From the looks of it nobody was moving towards the girl on the skyride to assist her getting down, and being in that line of storms before it got to seaside, it was moving FAST!!! It was already on top of them when she jumped, had she sat there waiting a minute or two longer her risk of being hit by lightning would have increased 1000%.
And looking at video all other chairs were empty around her.
I would have jumped down also 100%!

if this was the same night Christie was there, they should have just had him provide an additional public service aside from being governor by asking him to lay on the beach for people to jump from the skyride onto to him to cushion their falls........

And what if video was of her sitting in a steel cable car and getting struck by lightning and dying? How many people would be saying she should have jumped since nobody was around to assist her getting down before storm was on top of them???

I'd like to know why the chairs aren't moving when there are people on them and a major storming is coming in. I would have jumped off at some point too if it was faster than getting back to where you get on and off. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on that with lighting crashing all around!

She was ok people!!! I was at the Restaurant right across from there looking out the window and to be honest I think she was stupid for jumping. She left her friend behind that did not jump. I guess she was too scared. There was a man up there as well and he seemed angry. Maybe she thought it was the end of the world...who knows. All i know is that my food was great but I was annoyed that I had to wait and waigt for the lights to go back on :0/

Great adventure monitors weather and shuts sky ride long before storms get close, boardwalk should do the same especially for rides like this that take a long time to offload everyone!

The girl also posted on the comments on Youtube on the video page, she said she was ok but sore. JSHN is the best. They beat the Asbury Park Press to news stories. The site has many contributers and the news updates are from all over the state. The site started out just reporting on Jersey Hurricanes and morphed into a pretty good breaking news page on Facebook. Sometimes they post the news with pictures as it's happening. Something the Asbury Park Press seems not to be able to do.

Everyone and their brother has a phone that gets weather. How could they not know a storm was coming? Even looking at the sky would be a hint not to get on any kind of ride like this. About time the state requires rides to have some backup generator before the ride can be licensed.

I dont know if I would do in now in my late 40's but I saw her on the news ,,, not a tiny girl & look older teenager , she was falling into sand, not ( concreate) I think knowing that storm was right behind me, I may have done the samething( at that age).... hmmmm possible broken bone or death... I dont blame her, They needed to not allow anyone on the ride when the wind started picking up;,
Need to keep a local weather radar at all these places.

Have you ever been hit by lightning? Doubtful. I have and believe me whatever pain she is feeling from the jump is a whole hell of a lot less than I felt. Not to mention the PTSD I have had to combat since 1998 when it happened. No one was helping her. Not even the guy filming. Maybe instead of taping he should have been calling 911 or offering to help. That storm was rolling in fast and I am sure self preservation took over. We are not in the mountains out west and I highly doubt she thought she would be endangering anyone. This is the Seaside Heights Boardwalk. If this was on a beautiful day and someone just randomly jumped I would say it was irresponsible and just plain dumb but that is not the case here.

We have a staffer at the shore. He used a modern tool called the "inter tubes" or something like that, and he knew an hour prior that a storm was arriving at the shore. Why local authorities did not know or react is a question that begs asking.
