Inspectors Descend on Brick Neighborhoods in Power Restoration Quest

Homes need to be inspected before "grids" of homes are powered up

Update: 11:46 a.m. - The township is reporting 16 crews performing electrical inspections Tuesday.

~

By Tuesday morning, only six electrical customers in Brick Township were without power.

But Jersey Central Power and Light's map of outages reflected the number of homes without power where power would otherwise be available. Some township neighborhoods remain in the dark as inspectors continue to comb through storm-ravaged sections to determine whether it is safe to let the electricity flow again.

Nine inspectors from the state joined township inspectors Monday in a process of restoring power to Shore Acres, Baywood and other neighborhoods near Barnegat Bay. The longevity of power outages in those areas led to a rift emerging between the township and JCP&L over the weekend that eventually resulted in township officials bringing their case to state authorities.

In the end, it was determined that houses in areas that were badly flooded must be inspected before power can be restored.

On Monday, according to township officials, 462 homes were inspected, out of which 105 were determined to be unsafe.

For homes determined to be unsafe, the electrical meters are pulled and inspectors move to the next house. Once an area of the electrical grid is cleared – with safe homes inspected and unsafe homes' power cut – the entire area will be re-energized at once, the township said in an updated issued Monday night.

For those whose homes are determined to be unsafe, electrical work must be completed, an additional inspection must be performed, and JCP&L must reinstall an electrical meter before power can be restored.

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis has been holding frequent meetings with local homeowners at Angela Hibbard Park to update them on the situation.

The inspections will continue Tuesday, officials said.

Meanwhile, residents in the township's barrier island neighborhoods were being told not to consume water or flush toilets during the time they are allowed back in their homes.

"You may have water in your lines but it is not acceptable to consume it until testing is complete," the state Department of Environmental Protection said in a statement Monday. "You are advised by most water companies that the water is NOT safe to consume."

As for the toilet-flushing ban: "The discharge from such activities will strain already disabled or broken systems, and may cause environmental damage and backup of sewage in homes," the DEP's statement said.

No power at Tunes Brook Drive. Inspectors from Alabama deemed our house safe, but every time we call JCP&L we get the run around and documented lies.

I totally suport a class action suit against these bastards.

This is not true. I live at the end of Mandalay on Knoll Crest. No one has power and there are MANY more than 6 houses !!! I just called the Mayors office and was told that they need home to home inspections which is what we have been hearing. He said The Department of Community affairs mandated JCP&L that every house to be inspected and if it's compromised they will pull the meter and once they are all inspected they will turn the power on. The State was supposed to send 20 inspectors yesterday and he said they initially got 6 ended up with 9! Seriously we are going on 15 days with no power and the State can't send inspectors!

Jennifer, I direct you to the second paragraph re: six houses -

"But Jersey Central Power and Light's map of outages reflected the number of homes without power where power would otherwise be available. Some township neighborhoods remain in the dark as inspectors continue to comb through storm-ravaged sections to determine whether it is safe to let the electricity flow again."

Finally "some" information! Nine inspectors, 462 homes checked and 105 failed. People are pleading for information. The next step is for the town to give credible information on a daily basis on what streets have been inspected and the plan what specific areas are being inspected. Communication is critical! People want to know.

I did just put a call into the Governor's office also and told them what I was told by the Mayor's office. Of course she stated she couldn't confirm if the statement regarding the inspectors was true but she would look into it.

What if people are at work and the inspector can't get access to the home? Or what if it's a vacation home and the owner won't be back for weeks/months? Will that hold the rest of the grid hostage?

We need a schedule of when the inspectors will be on specific blocks, so we can be home. There needs to be some organization regarding this issue.

Neighboring Towns have been doing inspections with their own building department employees. If we are paying Toms River for shared services, why hasn't anybody been in Brick? They could have started the process last week!

Let's see how JCPL, Acropolis and Christie like being put on the news and exposed.

Get the word out that NBC News is coming, call the radio stations and keep calling their offices to complain.

Where is NBC News going to be. I live in Shore Acres/Baywood section/ on alameda. Also working in Jackson. Don't have internet when I am in transit or at myhouse. My telephone is 732 221-0468 if anyone can tell me about how to "schedule" inspector or when a meeting will be.Feel "jet-lagged" which is "normal" for us all! Hang on everyone!

I'm tired of bitching on the phone. Wish our mayor could act like Christie. "Normal procedures do not exist anymore, do what you have to do." He said something like that to the power companies early in this crisis.

This is a mess and a class action lawsuit is in the works against JCPL. Not because we have no power, not because we are inconvenienced, it is because of their mishandling of the situation, the lies, the brush offs for 15 days. Its getting cold, we have children going to school in the dark, doing homework by flashlight and we have elderly on oxygen who can't afford generators not to mention the fuel to keep them going. First Energy/JCPL is to blame for this not the linemen so before anyone goes there, NOBODY is mad at the lineman.

My husband works for JCPL and he says it's the inspectors! He worked all day fixing poles and transformers in an area on Sunday, and they waited hours for inspectors. They COULD NOT throw the circuit in until each and every home on that circuit had been inspected and apparently because it was Sunday they couldn't get any out there. My husband hasn't had a day off in over 2 weeks and they don't work on Sundays??? Needless to say this neighbourhood was verbally abusive to my husband and others on his crew and it was not their fault!!! They did their part! And Acropolis posts on the township web page a few days ago that JCPL was refusing to turn on power....NOT TRUE!!! Our town has terrible leadership during this time of crisis...THAT is the problem!!!

We reached out to NBC and every other news station telling them our story. Brian Thompson is NBC's New Jersey correspondent.

Unfortunately, I agree with the 'wishful thinking' comment. Hopeful but am tired of being disappointed. We're 2+ hours away - can someone local call town hall to find out what happens when an inspector can't get into a home because owner is not there==> at work, on vacation, re-located due to the cold? Will the neighborhood be held hostage??? Thankfully our neighbor called us yesterday while the inspector was in the area and he let the guy into our house to approve the panel. Not everyone who's away will be so fortunate. Please find out from the township, or bring this up when NBC news is there today!!!!

so sad.... we all feel pain for those who lost their homes, I pray for them everyday. I don't want to complain about no power all this time....BUT can someone please be honest and show some caring for those without power and displaced from their homes.
My family has been living separately due to the situation...We miss our homes and family. We need our homes and families. Can someone please do something?

Cheryl I am sorry those people treated your husband that way, everyone I have spoken too in no way blames the linemen and we all hold them in the highest regard. Then again, no JCPL linemen have serviced our area, only Alabama, Georgia, Ohio an Penn. Unfortunatly you are incorrect, it is 100% JCPL fault. This is day 15 for us with no power. We have called JCPL and have been told that this is all FEMA's fault, that FEMA ordered our area not be turned back on. FEMA denied this and one of my neighbors even called JCPL on speaker phone with a FEMA supervisor there. The JCPL rep again stated it was all FEMA's holding them back. FEMA got on the phone with JCPL and informed them otherwise. JCPL had no comment after that. Furthermore my section of Shore Acres NEVER went underwater, not once, nope no wate, nada drop and we are still sitting without power, I know this is true for other sections fo Brick as well. Now lets for arguements sake say saftey issue, the meters have to be inspected...OK fine. SO why was Cherry Quay that took on 5 feet of water, had meters AND panels sumerged still have power? As a matter of fact they never lost power, still have it and have never, not once, nada ever, been inspected. Same goes for sections of Mantoloking (my mother lives there) her apartment took on water...no inspections, power in 24 hours. I am terribly sorry for how your husband was treated, no excuse, that was wrong however JCPL is a problem. I can go on, out of characters:(

Cheryl, I was guessing JCPL's motivation for not turning on the power is for liability reasons. They wouldn't want to be blamed for power coming on and a spark arcs and a house or more burns down. However, Stacy's comment above that JCPL turned on power in Cherry Quay's flooded neighborhood early on has me floored. I don't want to get worked up all over again, but this is NOT making sense!!!
