Increased Security Continues in Brick Schools
Meetings, evaluations still taking place as well
Officials in town say that increased security patrols at Brick Township schools in the wake of the December shooting in Newtown, Conn., will continue.
In a joint statement released by Superintendent Dr. Walter Uszenski and Police Chief Nils R. Bergquist, it was explained that since the Connecticut incident, detectives from the Brick police department's Investigations Division have been randomly attending each school throughout the day and evaluating the current security measures that are in place.
They are also, in conjunction with the School Resource Officers – police officers permanently assigned to work in the township's schools –, meeting with each school's administrator to address any safety concerns they might have, the statement said.
The increased security also includes officers on patrol.
"Uniformed patrol officers have been directed to frequent the schools that are in their patrol district and also check and test the current security procedures that are in place," the statement said.
In addition to the increased police presence, the township's School Safety Committee, which consists of members from both the school district and police department, are meeting to review existing policies and procedures, safety measures and physical security measures at all of the schools.
"This is an on-going process which is often tested, practiced and evaluated for its effectiveness," the statement said. "This committee is always looking for innovative ideas to improve the safety at each and every one of the township schools for the children and staff."
Uszenski, even before the Sandy Hook shooting, had mentioned improving security measures and keeping students safe as one of his priorities.
He later requested each principal submit a list of security concerns to him for immediate action.

Our children do not even have to rob a bank to go to armed prisons. They just need to go to school.
Glad keeping students safe, is One of Uszenski priorities. I am sure it was hard decision between keeping kids safe and negotiating a larger pension.
Lets see last weeks meme was town property taxes were lowest in the world , I believe. This weeks meme , is our children our safe, just don't worry about who is guarding the guards.
Hmmm, I hope am not being Patch propaganzied.....

If someone wants to shoot up a school, a shopping mall, a theater or a house, there is little that anyone or group can do to prevent it. When the school busses are arriving or departing there are hundreds of kids walking all over the place. There are dozens of doors and windows in school buildings. When classes are changing there are hundreds of kids all over the building. Every door is breeched. All we can do is hope to reduce semi-automatic weapons and identify potential nut jobs that want to do harm to others. That is a tall order. Who really knows who is the next to go off the deep end?

Yes you pay taxes but YOU choose to send your child to private school. You are welcome back anytime you wish! You knew going in that those were the rules and now there is a problem and you want to change the rules. You need to ask your school administrators that you pay directly what they are going to do about it. I am sure the public schools will have to give up part of their budget to the police dept or have to give up programs, teachers, supplies, maintenance etc to pay for this. What are you willing to give up?

@ Denny D..I agree with you the movement of kids has to be hard to watch and control and with the dozen of doors and at time being kept open with a pen or pencil needs to be stopped. And your right you never know when someone will snap so better drug testing may need to be done to prevent harm to others.I know you are aware of the pill and other problem in our school..

I was at BMHS today to pick up a sick child. When I rang the bell I was told to stand in front of the camera and give my name and reason for entering the school. Once inside they asked if I was taking the child home and asked for ID (even though they know me)
While I understand you can not guard every door and window, and can not control student movement when they go to and from the buses, do feel increase security is warranted.

I went to school to pick up my son. #1...they cannot see you from the office to the door. They just ask why you are there. #2... It says "report to the office upon entering"... I walked thru the school without reporting to the office. Not one person stopped me. I didn't sign in nor have a visitor tag. There was a police vehicle in the parking lot. Lot of good that did when I didn't see one in the building. . Schools are no safer. If I could just walk thru the school like that what's to say someone else can't?

HMMMMMMMM ok #1 that little box where you have to push the button, has a camera in it, so yes they can see you. #2 I do not believe you walked through the school doing what you please and no one stopped you.
Seriously, why do people have to make up stories about things they dont believe in? If you dont think we need security at school thats fine, but you dont have to make up a story to make your point. It cheapens your comments.

I actually contacted the principal and let him know I walked thru the school without stopping at the office. Sorry you feel everyone is a liar. I have children on the Middle school & in the HS. & OF COURSE want my children safe, but there's another part of me that is not to allow to feed into the fear, Just like after 9/11 ( that my children where alive for) we cant life our lives in fear & allow the terrorist to get the best of us .....

Dear margo yes I chose for private school and that is my right. I pay for it. I have no faith in the system here. And to educate you so does a great deal of this towns public school administrators enroll their chilren in private school. Stating that my tax dollars go to police salaries just like the public school families. The mission of the police department is to protect and serve All citizens. Did you ever think how much higher your taxes would be if all the private school students would be enrolled in the public school system. Be careful of what you ask for. .....

I went to pick up my child at one of the middle schools the week after the Sandy Hook massacre. I was not asked to show identification to take him out of the school, and while I stood and watched about 5 students opened the front door for a pizza delivery person who never got a chance to ring the bell. Not one adult in charge addressed that situation and Dr. Uszenski still has not responded to my email regarding the situation.

Sam I sincerely hope that money you are putting out for your children's education serves them better than the education of their parent. Reread your comments. You sound like an imbecile. I assure you (as you put down our schools) that any child who cares about an education will thrive whether Mommy and Daddy try to buy it or not. If you despise the public school system so much so be it but you chose to leave and now you will need to pony up some more of your money for extra protection. Stop your whining.
On a separate note as a product of private school I can tell you firsthand they are riddled with drugs. Worse than public schools. So take your high and mighty elsewhere.

Lynn , who's the imbecile. I never put down the public education system. I was referring to the comment from Margo that if I want police protection for my child you have to go to public school. The examples I referred to about administrators from the public school system sending their kids to private schools are facts. If it hurts to hear too bad. And even a road scholar like yourselfrs can do the math if all the private schools closed down they would join the public school ranks@about $10, 000 each. Use that great private education you received from mommy and daddy and add it up. I'm impressed that you spell education imbecile correctly. Probably from reading it on the teachers comments on the back of your report cards.
