UPDATE: Hurricane-Ravaged Barrier Island Section Will Open Thursday
The section will stretch from the Mantoloking Bridge to the Toms River border
A portion of the barrier island from Mantoloking Bridge south to the Toms River border will re-open beginning Thursday at 7 a.m., according to the Brick Township Office of Emergency Management.
The area was especially hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in late October, destroying homes, eroding beaches and leaving piles of sand in the streets.
The department, which made the announcement late Wednesday, has asked that contractors and homeowners be aware of the parking and driving conditions in the area. Residents and contractors will be required to leave at 4 p.m., police said.
The department warned people not to not park in front of any debris piles and make every effort to park vehicles in driveways and/or off the streets.
Lanes of travel on all streets need to be open to allow access for emergency personnel and equipment, such as ambulances and firetrucks, according to the department.
On Dec. 10, the Normandy Beach area of the barrier island will be closed to residents and contractors because of work being completed by New Jersey Natural Gas. This area will be all streets south of Jeanette Drive, on both the ocean and bay sides of the island. Everything north of Jeanette Drive will have access that day, police said.
If anyone has any questions, they can contact the Brick Township call center at 732-262-1234.
At last night's Brick Township Council meeting, Mayor Steve Acropolis said gas, water and electric are expected to be restored by the end of the month on the barrier island.

No. There are still restrictions and access is only for Property Owners and Registered Contractors. I confirmed that this morning with Emergency Mgt.

You have some class. He said nothing wrong. The people who live on the barrier island don't own it. I have lived in Brick for over 50 years. I was born here. You have the right to keep us off of your private property but not the roads and public lands. Especially the beaches. People are naturally curious and especially if the shore is their LIFE. Why don't you get some class.

It is impractical to allow anyone else over due to the traffic. It is also rude and insensitive to think that you have a right to to the roads and public lands when people are being denied access to their own property.

Well said John Smith. I worked on the Barrier Island and shed many tears for those who lived and worked there. The people Scott is condemning are many of the same who gave their time freely to help those who needed it. Not everyone is riding around treating it like a freak show.

The island belongs to all, not just we the homeowners, these people are paying the taxes that are being spent on FEMA grants and infrastructure rebuild.
Don't be an elitist with your stay away attitude, We need these folks that don't live on the island to bring it back, they are volunteering their help and donating money for the recovery effort.
Get over yourself with the gawker theory!! I am sick of people saying don’t look at my trash on the street or my broken home, if the disaster was on the mainland don't tell me you would not be curious.
Thank You to all the folks who helped me and my friends and family!!

Benny I always find that funny especially when 90% of the island is a benny.
If you are not a full time resident and there are not many of us who are you are a benny. I love all who come to enjoy the beach and visit in the summer if gives the place life!!

@scott. I am sorry for your loss but your comments are rude. Part of the barrier island is Brick, the town I pay taxes to. There are many people of Brick who do understand Sandy as our homes were also destroyed. I have many friends and family that live down there, as my parents once did too. People who live in ocean and Monmouth county chose to do so for the love of our beaches and we are certainly heartbroken by the damaged caused to all the homes and businesses. We do understand and care. Our beaches and our hometown took a huge beating from Sandy. Let's work as a community to restore the shore, not beat each other down more.

It's unfortunate that those who are fortunate enough to live on the shore have forgotten that these "tourists" help fuel their economy. Yes, while I understand Scott's angst as I used to leave in Florida for a number of years. However, I grew up visiting these jersey shores. These are MY memories and my childrens memories. and I will participate in the the rebuilding by donating my money and SPENDING my money at shore. Yes, Scott, your comments are rude and condescending. I guess since you don't want the general public visiting and purchasing food, gas, and items from "your" beach community then you should not want public, state, and federal assistance either.

So, can anyone access these areas or just the homeowners? The question hasn't been answered. And yes Scott, the beach doesn't belong to you. It belongs to everyone, especially those of us who are paying taxes to maintain it and repair the damage Sandy has done to your home and neighborhood. I am sorry for your loss, we all feel for what you are going through and the emotional toll the storm has caused. We are all in this together and all want our beaches back!

So let see Mr. Sott. Heres what I would suggest for a a brain trust like yourself. You are obviously a highly educated individual judging by your posts, and probably very influential in your community. Why dont you post the street name that you live on, so all volunteer and tax payer supported aid can halt on your street. The portion of taxes that YOU and YOUR neighbors pay can be applied where its appreciated. I know in my heart that your neighbors will be grateful for the new found peace you have brought tnem. Then yous can rally for more streets to join your cause. Im sure that in short order there will no longer be a need for a bridge as there will only be the residents there, unless of course yous wouldnt mind paying for the upkeep of the bridge to YOUR Island and beach. Maybe plant crops on the open land that was used for parking. Perhaps a few head of cattle to start. Yous can have your own little colony. Oh, and should there be another storm like Sandy, have your boats ready for escape, and please dont call the mainland for help.

Remember nature never intended the shore to be a primary residence. Stupidity is supposed to hurt in anything you do in life and it would be stupid to live there as your primary residence if you can't pay to play. Monmouth County is already setting up beach sweeps to clean the beaches, so expect those public roads in your area to be used for the same. I'm sure local businesses would like to see the public roads used by all. You can't keep the shore bottled up forever.

Coming in to take pictures of water sand and devestatiom is unnecessary. All your doing is creating UNNECCESARY traffic. Your run the risk of an accident that will put emergency crews in jeapordy. Plain and simple your going to get in the way. People's homes need to be repaired first that's priority. Not your memories. You have the good memories now leave it be give people time to restore their own lives. I'm sure they would love the freedom to not have any worries and just take a cruise..... STAY OFF THE ISLAND. And no I don't live there. I just use common sense. Something many lack.

Pretty ironic with a name like Veritas you speak nothing close to the truth. There are LIFE LONG RESIDENTS of this town that have been forced off of the barrier island due to the taxes. Are you telling me that those people, as well as anyone else who is near and dear to the shore don't have a right to go? I have a news flash for you, if the powers that be indicate that the island is open to other than homeowners and contractors, I'll be up there too. Who do you people think that you are? YOU DO NOT OWN THE BEACH. I was born in Pt Pleasant hospital, I have lived here my entire life which is more than most of the residents on the barrier island can say. You did well in life, you have the means to live on the island great, I am happy for you. But don't you dare tell me that I can't come there assuming it's open to the public, and safe.

I don't give a crap about Scott and his attitude public land is public land and I will go anywhere I want as long as it is BUT, you won't catch me on the island until all the work is done and tested. Don't think I want to be someplace where they are re energizing wires or pressurizing gas lines and both utilities have been working for awhile and deemed safe. While no one is sure what happened to those homes in Manasquan , they were working on the gas lines in the area and that may or may not have caused the awful fire but it just shows, is still dangerous out there even when it was thought no to be.. For the people who really have no idea of the devastation that has hit NJ, I started shooting this storm 2 days before its arrival starting at Sandy Hook and making my way to Island Beach. Knowing the overall size of it being over 900 miles wide and just a 10% chance of it turning offshore, I knew it would change our shoreline forever. I have been documenting it ever since. My images have reached people all across the country many whom I even had gone to school with at the Jersey Shore. In some case people came to see if I had images of their contents in front of their house because the town had already taken away their belongings before FEMA could come inspect . So in many ways the images do help. It is also history in the making. I know a few people might not appreciate images being taken, but 10 or 20 years from now they will be glad I did. In any case, a woman approached me in Island Heights and told me she did not appreciate photos being taken of her home. I simply asked her which home was hers and I was happy to grant her request. With almost 17,000 views of the Galleries, I would say that certainly shows people are interested. Images may be found here: http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/destinations_nj_storms_hurricane_sandy
May GOD bless all that have been effected by this storm and give you strength to get through these difficult times.

I understand the frustration of the residents. They weren't even allowed back into their town for a long time after the storm to assess the damages. They certainly don't need the gawkers now that they are there and trying to salvage what they can. Volunteers should be welcome, but if you just want to take a drive to see the destruction, you should just not do it. While the shore may carry fond memories for a lot of people, I assure, as someone who grew up in a beach town and lived there for 30 years I can assure you it doesn't mean nearly as much to you non residents as it does to the ones who live there. For you it's a trip to the boardwalk, or a weekend at the shore, or going to the restaurants for dinner, a week's vacation--for them it's where they raise their children, own business, celebrate holidays with friends and family, home. So try to understand where these homeowners are coming from. Not all shore towns are full of rich people and big beach houses. Some are barely getting by and this is a big hit for them. I can't wait until summer because I know the jersey shore will be back! Jersey strong we are!
