As a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman Monday night, Gov. Chris Christie's witty banter and doughnut-eating may have made headlines, but he was quick to remind everyone that Hurricane Sandy relief is still needed.
Christie and Letterman talked about the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund started by first lady Mary Pat Christie. She announced today that two major celebrities have joined the honorary advisory board.
Bono, front man of U2, and NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will join Bruce Springsteen, former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, Jon Bon Jovi and others on the board.
Bono called it “an honor” to support the relief efforts.
“Sandy took away just about every piece of my Jersey Shore childhood,” said Williams, who is from Monmouth County and has a home in Ocean County. “'Jersey Strong’ isn’t just a phrase; it’s a way of life. It’s a redundancy actually. The rest of the country will see how strong we are, starting now.”
The nonprofit relief fund was started Nov. 1, four days after Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey and surrounding areas. To date, more than $32 million has been raised for the fund.
“We are thrilled that Bono and Brian have lent their names to assist New Jersey families in rebuilding their lives and overcoming the most destructive storm in our state’s history,” Mary Pat Christie said.
Last month, more than $50 billion in federal aid was approved for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. On Letterman Monday night, Christie said although the delay in voting on the package didn’t make him very happy, the money should come this month to help with rebuilding.
More than 40,000 families are still homeless, Christie noted.
“We will rebuild,” Williams said in a statement. “We will see you on the boardwalk in time for the first waves of summer.”

I agree Frank. I think the bantering was lighthearted and honest. I believe Letterman had a good time with the interview and gained a whole new respect for the Gov. of NJ.

Pat, here is what the Sandy NJ Relief Funds website says.....
"The grants, varying in size, will support non-profit organizations and volunteer groups delivering critical services at the county and local levels, some of which are already assisting those personally affected by Hurricane Sandy."
I agree with you. I haven't seen anything from any of these organizations. I applied to a couple of them and I got nothing......

He is always "Marketing" himself....He is the most celebrity NJ governor I have ever seen in my life. He is everywhere, T.V. Shows, Radio Stations,Disney World, Concerts, Boardwalks,Super-bowls, flying all over different states supporting a losing candidate instead of staying in NJ dealing with the states issues. Some make him into a hero...Don't people realize that he is in this for himself. Politics as usual.

Sadly, this is the kind of activity that people associate with a good leader. He is shrewd and has been able to convince the majority of people in NJ that he actually cares about them. It's kind of fascinating to watch people vehemently defend someone they've never met.

We flooded out on multiple occasions. 2 Major floods within a few months in 2011. It took 4 months to receive check from flood insurance. Then that check needs to goto your mortgage company and then they disburse in increments. It's a Horrible process to say the least! These people pay for insurance, therefore the $$ should be in p,ace and sent once claim is accepted. This would be the logical way of doing it, hopefully they will catch on soon. Sorry you are living through this, it's so unacceptable on many levels.

Hey commonman, easier said than done!!!! Can't move outta our homes in the condition they are right now from the storm. Can't sell. Who will buy the home the way it looks? Alota homes gotta be raised, can't get any assistance until the home is raised all ready and your insurance claim is settled.
So you say move out of the flood zone. Can't until we repair the damages. It's a vicisious cycle that we all are living. You shouldn't make any kinda comments like that until you know that facts.

Why is everyone so concerned about the the speedy rebuilding of the boardwalks? There isn't going to be any disposable income left to support them. Homes and businesses are going to be shuttered up left and right. Residents will be losing jobs. Property taxes along with flood insurance premiums are going to bury the economy in the Northeast. Where are the doughnuts going to come from when all the bakeries down?

I love the people that keep drinking the Christie Kool Aid. He is very good at promoting himself, but what has he done to improve anything in NJ. He is no different than any other NJ politician, only more obnoxious. Just look at the no bid contract he gave AshBritt to clean up the shore. Taxes still high. Unemployment still high. Revenue is down so expect more cuts to services.The only place where the employment picture has improved is the Dunkin Donuts in Trenton by the statehouse.

Commonman.. First off many of these people have flood insurance! Therefore just as you or anyone else that purchases a insurance policy expects parent for their loss. These people are still living through hell because insurance companies haven't paid out! For you to tell someone to just cut their losses and move out of a flood zone is pure ignorance.

Ms. Paciolla, I would love to see you do a follow up article on this. My house -- and my entire neighborhood in Manahawkin has been decimated and I don't know of anyone who has received one dime yet -- or even the promise of a dime. Even those with full flood insurance are receiving embarassing fractions of what they should be getting. I would LOVE to know where all this relief money is going!

Olga and Stacey.. Sad to say but its going to take a long time to get insurance $$. We lived in hotels for 11 weeks following Irene. If I didn't have a father to loan me $$ for mold remediation, clean out.. Etc there would of been no house to return too. I believe the $$ being raised is going to be used toward building up the community & donating to the Red Cross for everything they provided.
