Good Samaritan Killed While Helping To Push Disabled Car off Garden State Parkway
Accident happened at mile marker 74.7 northbound, State Police say
A man who was trying to help push a disabled car off the northbound lane of the Garden State Parkway died when a passing car struck and killed him early this evening, State Police said.
Preliminary reports indicate the man was one of four who stopped to push the disabled car onto the shoulder of the roadway in Lacey Township, Sgt. Adam Grossman said.
"The person at the rear left of the vehicle was struck by a passing motor vehicle," he said. "Unfortunately it looks like a Good Samaritan...they are still trying to sort things out."
The man - whose identify is being withheld for now - was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by the Lacey Township First Aid Squad.
"He was pronounced dead at the hospital," Grossman said.
The accident occurred at 5:46 p.m. at mile marker 74.7. More information will be released tomorrow, he said.

Always stay it your car and dial 911 because it is an emergency if you break down on the parkway/turnpike/major highway. This is why it's posted to stay in your vehicle. My condolences to the family.....

I just don't understand how vehicles on the shoulder are struck so often. as I pass a disabled vehicle I ponder that idea. and the conclusion I have come to is that as I approach the vehicle if I look towards it I am more inclined to drift towards it as well. So now I always look forward and it keeps me well away from it. it is very sad for the man's family.

A few days after my husband entered the trauma unit at JSUMC 2 years ago, a guy came in - basically the same thing, he stopped to help someone broken down on the parkway. Two months later when my husband was discharged, this guy was still in the trauma unit having surgeries ever few days.

What a shame! God bless him and his family. Problem in NJ is drivers dont slow down when something is in their way so to speak, they speed up to get around it. Cause god for bid you dont get where you are going 30 seconds faster. If you are driver 80 mph & using your gps and look at you ETA the differance in time between 80 mph & 65 mph is about 2 mins at most..... is that 2 mins worth the cost?

As someone who has spent over twenty years as an EMT and a paramedic, I've come to learn that highways are one of the most dangerous places to work, even with all the lights and reflective striping on my vehicle. People just don't pay attention, and tens of police officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs are killed every year by inattentive motorists. This is where the "Move Over" law came from. Good Samaritans are afforded no such physical or legal protections.
If you break down, pay attention to the signs that say "Disabled? Dial #477 and STAY IN YOUR CAR" (caps are mine). Do not dial 9-1-1 unless there is an accident or you are having a medical emergency. 9-1-1 is routed to the closest local dispatch center, which must be rerouted to the State Police.
If you see a breakdown: Don't stop. The other guys' misfortune is not worth risking your life. Feel free to dial #477 for them, though.

It was definately a New Yorker that clearly doesn't know how to navigate Jersey highways... my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the person who had no idea that helping a person in need would cause him his life..... Maybe they should get the troopers back on the highways and off of the side roads in the Sandy affected area... let the local cops take care of that... the sad part a trooper probably passed this car and was in a rush to get no where ...

@craig.... i m not a New Yorker or a fan of them, but that has nothing to do with navigating A highway jersey one or not! More than most of the people in jersey cant do it! As far as the troppers go, if they enforced the laws of the highways, people would be complaining bout that. The parkway is a death trap do to drivers speeding if you do the speed limit it will get you run off the road. People doing 75+ mph in the left lane and 3 or more cars tailgating behind

It's a living nightmare for everyone involved. People have to be more alert. When driving...don't text, no cell phone calls, no using an iPad, no putting on makeup...basically, don't do anything that takes your eyes off the road even for a second or your whole life can change.
One more thing. Officers have to crack down on motorcycle drivers that ride the line between cars. I see that all the time. Scary for me.

I drove up the parkway yesterday afternoon in the "snow storm". What a nightmare. I was doing 40-45mph in the right lane keeping up with the flow of traffic. Slush and snow covered the road and idiots were still flying by like it was a sunny day out. And this was through the Brick area construction zone.

The biggest problem on the GSP is SPEED! It's a 55 mph zone, I'm doing 60-65 and have to stay in the slow lane as cars are whizzing by. What are they doing? 75-80? And then there are the jerks who don't put on their lights when the windshield wipers are on. (State law) That's another problem: inattention. God bless that poor man and my prayers go out to his family.

It is so sad to read about another senseless death. I have been a truck driver for many years driving more than a million miles primarily east of the Mississippi and have always found Jersey drivers to be some of the worst in obeying road laws. What is the big hurry? Do they have jobs that they love so much they are willing to die for them? Cell phones are the end of civilization far too many on them while driving, including cops, schoolbus drivers, teenagers. People watching TV while driving, on computers, fixing your hair, putting on lipstick, eating, following entirely too close for the speed your driving. I can go on and on. The answer is for the police and troopers to enforce the law. Until then drivers will continue to disregard the law.

Its horrible to hear that someone was killed. I have posted in the past about my own experience with aggressive drivers and the loss of my husband in 2005, as he was run off the road by some lunatic who took off and was never found to take responsibility. That being said, reading some of these comments sickens me. I am from New York, born and raised and proud of it. I moved here 5 years ago and have never seen such reckless drivers in my life. And guess what?? Doesnt matter if they are seniors or teenagers, men or woman...they all have New Jersey plates. Also, fyi, in New York, we learn how to make a left. Its not that compliacted really. Never saw a jughandle til i moved here and i still dont see the benefit of them. My 2 cousins passed their road test in a PARKING LOT in Monmouth County both have been in multiple accidents. In NY, guess where we take our road test??? On a road!!! I have yet to be involved in a car accident and was taught to drive in NYC. I have grown to like NJ but will not as a native New Yorker allow anyone to blame us for your lack of driving skills. I will gladly post the proof. Look it up yourselves.

Cities With The Worst Drivers 2012 forbes.com
Taken on a state-wide basis, California would seem to have the worst drivers overall, placing five cities among the top 25, including Glendale (5), San Francisco (10), Los Angeles (14), Fullerton (16) and Torrence (22). New Jersey came in a close second with four cities among the top 25, with Florida and Virginia tied for third with three cities each.
And, no, New York City didn’t even make the top 10 in Allstate’s 2012 list, though it still ranked at number 20, with residents being 41.1 percent more likely than the average motorist to get into an accident."

John...really? Do you know for a fact that the driver could have pulled over & just didn't? Obviously, if he could have driven over to the shoulder, he would have. Do you think he consciously stopped his car in a lane & sat there if it was drivable? The 4 people were helping him to get to the shoulder. It wasn't his fault but the person driving the car that hit him. You might want to rethink your comment.

John if you know how to read the lady spun out in icy conditions and couldn't restart her car and was positioned in the right hand lane and the shoulder, they were pushing her to the side of The road ... the problem with this being a privately owned highway is there is no driver assistant trucks driving around like you see on 195. Also if the troopers weren't so busy patrolling the streets of bayhead and mantaloking there would be more on the parkway doing there job..
