Furor From Councilman Over Blocked Boat Ramp

Mayor, councilman disagree on Glenwood Place ramp closure

Boaters are no longer able to launch their vessels from trailers at the Glenwood Place boat ramp, a move that has angered one township councilman.

The mud ramp at the relatively secluded end of Glenwood Place – a street off Mantoloking Road – has served as a free launching place into the Metedeconk River for decades, but is now blocked off by a guardrail.

Closing the ramp was an "asinine" and "ludicrous" thing for the township's administration to do, Councilman Dan Toth said this week.

"To take away a public access point is a slap in the face to the taxpayers and the residents of this town because we are such a waterfront community," said Toth, adding that members of his family own a good deal of the property around the ramp and have never been bothered by people using it.

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said the closure came after multiple complaints from neighboring residents and marina owners, who told township officials that boaters were urinating and defecating in the grass adjacent to the ramp and ignoring a No Wake zone from the ramp to the main channel of the Metedeconk to the east.

"Nobody living across from that boat ramp should have to see people squatting to go to the bathroom," said Acropolis, adding that there were also complaints about garbage being dumped near the ramp as well as people "coming in and out at all hours."

"The town just doesn't go out and do things for no reason," he said. "Nobody went by there one day and said, 'hey let's close this boat ramp.' But you cannot legislate good behavior."

Toth said he also took issue with a sign being erected at the site directing boaters to use the ramp at Traders Cove Marina, which carries a fee for users.

"People are hurting, and we're taking away public access points for them to enjoy the water," he said.

The daily ramp fee at Traders Cove is $10 for a "round trip" pass, which entitles a boater to launch and retrieve a boat. A season ramp pass is available for $100.

For boaters looking for no-cost alternatives, a free ramp is available off Beach Boulevard in Point Pleasant Borough, just south of the New Jersey State Police barracks near the Lovelandtown Bridge. Boats there are launched into the Point Pleasant Canal.

There is also a free, sand-covered launch area at the end of Bay Avenue in Point Boro, where boats can be launched into Barnegat Bay, though parking there is limited.

Why bitch moan and groan? Let's all show our appreciation for what the Mayor and Town Council has done for us this coming November! Just look at the list of wonderful achievements by this Mayor and some former members of the Council!
The 2% tax cap increase debacle and the lies that went with it!
The fake message on the trailer parked at the Foodtown lot just before the elections!
Red light cameras!
The threat of firing all the DPW workers and privatizing collections ( several times even after the tax increase)!
Acropolis! (actually that's the only thing that should be on this list)
The Foodtown property!
The beach fee imposed at Windward Beach!
The township council members who went along with everything the Mayor wanted to do because they were of the same party and didn't have the balls to say no and didn't act as a check and balance system like they are supposed to. (and are now trying to distance themselves from Acropolis in order to save their jobs come November, sorry too little to late).
Now we have a closing of a boat ramp that has been used by generations of people and one of the big excuses is people have been peeing in the weeds, Well how pious the members of the town council have become, remember guys we went to school with or hung out with you and we know where you have whizzed at one time or another. I draw the line at taking a dump on public grounds that's gross.
and last but not least....
BAMBOOOOOOO!
Start packing!
To think I voted for them.

Also, just what Mantaloking road needs, more traffic to the beach. I live on the river side of Mantaloking and it is next to impossible some weekends to get out on that road with all the traffic, so great plan mayor, send all the boats, jetskis and trailers to your pet project marina, nevermind the residents that will have to deal with the extra traffic. Bang up job your doing, whats next, a toll on the bridge?

1. Closing the ramp is the mayor's solution to enforcement of a no wake zone.
2. There used to be a garbage can at the ramp.
3. Since the Brick taxpayers paid for Trader's Cove, shouldn't that ramp be free to all residents.
4. Was the closure of the ramp ever discussed with the public?

The clowns who run this city don't really care about the residents of Brick they only see us as a tax base so that they can line their pockets and force boaters to go to another town to launch their boats. Obviously the better solution would have been to place a porta potti at the site and a trash barrel for the convenience of the boaters who live here. Seriously folks...the leadership here is lacking common sense and the citizens of this town are left out of the loop on decisions concerning our quality of life.

Glenwood Boat Ramp. I agree with Dan Toth the ramp should stay open!
This is not the first time a mayor tried to close the Glenwood boat ramp. Early in the 90's then the mayor Steve Zyboyan had tandem loads of dirt at the water’s edge to block its use. The outcry of Brick people quickly taught that mayor a lesson and it was removed.
History is repeating itself.
MAYOR; LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE. In Brick all paper streets give access to the residents to our best resource waterfront/water access. Look at Dock Road, Cherry Quay Beach, Bay Harbor and Kingfisher Cove. No one should be denied access to this great resource.
For 40 years my families property (corner of Mantoloking and old Hooper) has graciously allowed boaters to park their trailers and and utilize the launch site at Glenwood Place. I operate Exit All Around Realty on the corner and the people are courteous kind and clean There is never trash/garbage or indecent exposure. I have never seen urination or indecent exposure. Nor have I ever walked the property to pick up garbage. I also find that people spend money at the Hot dog Truck.
Mayor, It is not broken don’t try to fix it. Open Glenwood Place to our residents. You should also put a garbage can there for the residents to use.

Toth is just trying to cover his ass for the coming elections, too little too late. I voted for all of them, not this time! Anyone associated with Acropolis in my mind is gone this November. Acropolis IS the worst mayor this town has ever had. If Scarpelli was on the ballot this November I would vote for him convict or not. Hell I would vote my Aunt Tilly in and she has dementia, anyone would be better than the clowns in town hall breathing our taxed to the max Brick Township air.

"Assinine" and "ludicrous". Councilman Toth is being kind in using those words. The people in my District 9 are using words that are a bit more harsh, and unprintable. I've talked to several people in my District who utilize the ramp and they are very upset. There was no forewarning that this was to occur, nor any knowledge that there was indeed a problem. For the Mayor to unilateraly close the ramp is unconscionable and an affront to the citizens of Brick. If people are urineating and defecating at the ramp why are'nt these "neighbors" calling the Police. After all, it takes time to put a boat in the water, and if called the police have a good chance of catching these miscreants. Garbage is sometimes dumped at the sight. The common sense solution would be for the Town to put a couple of barrels there and secure them. As for ignoring the "no wake zone", that the "marina owners" are complaning about, some boaters ignore the no wake zones no matter where they are, is the Mayor going to close down the approach to the Mantolkoing Bridge because people are violating the no wake zone? Will he request the State close the Point Pleasant Canal becuse of no wake zone violations? Beaverdam Creek? Or the many other areas where this occurs? While there are some miscreants who misuse the ramp, the vast majority who use the ramp do so in a neighborly fashion showing respect to both the property owners and the land. To punish the majority of ramp users for the misconduct of a few is wrong.

This is really the same as closing what has been a public street and used for many years. You just can not do it legaly. What I would suggest to the town council that they draft a set of rules for use and enforce the rules. Limit hours of use. Trash can is not needed. People bring something they take it home too. Littering is it's own offence. Something is dumped it should carry a $200 fine. I would suggest taking the guardrail installation up in the courts as an illegal act. Don't we have an activity incentive about providing access to our waterways?

I also disagree with shutting down the Glenwood Boat Ramp. The recreational use of the natural resources of this state are still for "We the People". The problems stated by our Mayor, could simply be resolved with providing a port-poti, and trash cans. Isn’t that what we pay our taxes for? While yes, we could use travel further to use Traders Cove, for a fee. I went there once with my kayak and was told that I had to pay the $10 fee, to just drop it in the water. Not having the proper change, I left carried it to the water and dropped it in. Now we are closing another free dirt ramp that is used by the locals. Isn’t this still the Peoples country? Most states encourage the use of its resources, including free boat ramps, but not in NJ and Brick. First F-Cove and now Glenwood ramp. If it doesn’t bring in direct revenue for the township they shut it down. I still value my freedom, and this will be overturned.

I agree with Tom Z. The people that do the right thing are always having things taken away due to others. Instead of "punishing" the residents who use the ramp the proper way, something should be done about the trash people. The adjacent lot should be maintained (even if it is owned privately) . Fence off the lot if you must, so others will not trespass. Closing the ramp is not the answer. It sends the wrong message to the wrong people.

Long after we've passed on, our comments will remain somewhere "in the cloud" of the internet. Do you realise how much content with your name on it will be

Sholty has been a blow hard for years and years. He must have spent a fortune in stamps with all the letters to the editors he has mailed to every newspaper in the county over the years. Unfortunately these editors pumped up his ego by publishing his rants. That being said. I too have developed a dislike of Dan Toth who I voted for and gladly did. I thought he was going to be that knight in shining armor who would ride into town hall and make things right. In reality quite the opposite happened! He became one of Acropolis's brown nosers. The breaking point for me was the Bamboo ordinance that not only turned me against him but the other township council members as well. With gangs becoming more of a problem in Brick along with Foodtown and the DPW and a host of other more important issues, Bamboo became the big problem the town faced, it's everywhere ya know taking over the WHOLE town! Plus the ordinance was a tough one too! Practically saying the town could take your property away from you if you didn't get rid of the Bamboo. Really? That just showed me where Dan's head was and also the fact that this law was written because of a problem either one of his friends or family were having thus continuing the friends and family policy of this administration. Dan will not be getting my vote this time around, neither will the others. For the newbies on the council, don't repeat the same mistakes or it will be bye bye for you too.

Art:

With all due respect, Art, I feel your comments about Councilman Toth are just plain wrong. I find him to be a politician who tries to act in the best interest of the town and the people in it, and the only “spanking” that I witnessed him receiving was when he indicated during a council meeting a few years ago that putting the Ocean Ice Palace purchase on a referendum for township residents to vote on might be a good idea. Then-councilwoman Scaturro called his comments unconscionable.

As far as him being childish, that is to me, nonsense. Take a look at Mayor Acropolis's conduct this year alone for proof of what childish conduct is. I know that you like the mayor (so did I at one point), but the proof about both of them is online at the township's website under council meeting videos. Just because Councilman Toth does not blindly follow the lead of Brick Republicans does not make him a bad person or a bad politician. On the contrary, it is refreshing to me.

For the past few months I've been reading your accusation that Councilman Toth decided to be a Democrat. Where is your proof at? I feel that anyone who comments on an elected officials conduct should, in the interests of fairness, provide proof of it. He is still listed as a Republican. And if Councilman Toth decides to run for mayor I feel no one should “try to stop him”, as you stated you would. Whoever is Brick's next mayor should be left up to the voters on election day, pure and simple.

I also agree with almost everyone who has left a comment. I have lived in Brick since the early 70's, and that free ramp was always a perk. There are no places left to launch a small boat or jet ski. How sad is that? We are part of a water front community, right? I live in Cedar Bridge Manor, the development directly across from the ramp. My family has used that ramp for years. I have never seen anyone using the weeded area as a rest room. A gargage can is a nice idea,I think they were there years ago.I was shocked to see the newly paved road, but really disappointed to see the blockade to the water. Brick township has approx 50 miles of water front property. Can't we even get our 50 feet back. Come on Mayor and Town Council, reverse this ridiculous and unfair closure to an open water way. Don't punish everyone because of a few bad apples. They are probably out of towners anyway, We aren't like that in Brick !!!!!

Newman? This ramp is across the street from Newmans building where he neglected to pay his water bill for 25 years. The ramp is also across the street from that taxi company. Are they going to park their cabs there now?

My friends and I have been using that ramp since the 1970s. Our parents used to drop us off there and pick us up at the end of the day. Row boats, with and without motors, canoes.

I know of quite a few "free boat ramps" in town. Dont want to mention where they are because Acrapolis might shut them down also.

Some very good feedback from the residents but unfortunately it is tarnished by the embarrassing comments by other. People bash the mayor and then criticize the town and its people. How can you be a proud Brick resident with the asinine remarks? Take a 2nd look at your comments before you post something. Or better yet read it to your children first before you submit it.

1. Vote any and all politicians out that do not secure and make their first priority the tax paying citizen.
2. Make the town council hold hearings as to why the mayor or whomever has the authority to close any public access point. Then fire them or refer to number 1
3. Stop patronizing his marina as a sign of our discontent. Hold some protests show them our discontent.
4. I find it hard to believe that people were using the reeds as a toilet cause he would've put up a red light camera to catch and fine them.

There has to be some kind of EPA or CAFRA permit that needs to be approved before sinking a Guardrail into the high tide mark of a river. This should be looked into.

A garbage can, some strict warning signs and some chain link fencing could have solved all of the unproven complaints that the Mayor cited.

If Steve runs for re-election, and thinks he can win, he is crazy.

This article upsets me enough to comment. Bad move on the part of the town. This closure should have been discussed in public!!!!! What was the cost to install the guard rail, to pave the road, the printing of the sign and the labor to install it all? A Port-a -John and garbage can would have been a quick solution for the next 2 months. This should have been discussed by the public. Too quick on the trigger as far as I’m concerned!

I thank those of you who agree with me concerning the boat ramp. Do we ever think that if this wasn't located in the area near Bullet Dans relatives, would he get politically involved with Mayor Steve Acropolis? This is yet another page in the BOOK OF BULLET DAN'S WAYS TO WIN AN ELECTION. When he was chastized by Ex Councilnan Underwood about his wearing apparel at a council meeting he soon dressed in the same dark brown cardboard box he calls a suit. The fact that he was hollered at as a rookie lends credit to his stupid remarks at council meetings. He's a cheap skate and its about time he forfits his TOWN PAID HEALTH BENEFITS for one his wife gets from her job as a nurse in our system. Dan is a phoney, I will prove it in these blogs. I tell the truth and I question, where are those people who acknowledge the good work that this present administration has done for the voting public? To Dan; Take that illegal state legislator medallion stuck to your license plate on your Jeep. You do it or I will insist it be done. The choice is yours. Will you comply or will you continue to fool the public by impersonate someone who you are not? This has been your M-O since you started, wise up and get ou'ta town, now.

Friends of mine owned a house on the last road on the left that is on Glen. It's the only house on the right side of that road. They lived there for over thirty years and I spent many weekends at the house. How come I did not see, hear or smell any of this stuff said to be going on at that ramp? Seriously, the only problem every once in awhile was too many cars and trailers parked on the side of the road, but that was minimal problem at best. The mayor makes the place sound like the boat ramp from hell, when it's quite the opposite (just like the F-Cove descriptions). All of a sudden there a new boat ramp that the town owns and that they charge for use of and the Glen "boat ramp" is now a HUGE problem! Well yes it is now, as it will cut down on the people paying at Acropolis's ramp. I have lived in Brick a very, very long time. I have never seen a Mayor so hated by the township residents, NEVER in my whole life have I've seen people so up in arms about one person in this town, and the people I've talked to, are from all persuasions, twenty somethings to seniors, Republicans, Democrats, Independents. I think we should erect a statue of Acropolis in the middle of the Foodtown parking and make it a giant bird feeder and let the birds do to Acropolis what he has done to us.

There is another sandy ramp in brick that was recently closed. It is in the Baywood Neighborhood at the dead end of West Grenada Dr. The ramp was more of a clearing between trees, and I assume on common property between two privately owned lots. The ramp was ideal for wave runners, kayaks, and small boats. It too was a nice perk for local residents in this waterfront community. Towards the end of last year, this ramp was chained shut. If the property is privately owned, then I completely understand the purpose for shutting it. However, this year, a sign is posted stating its closure by Brick Township. If the land is public, then once again... here's another example of the township taking away the "perks" of living in Brick.

i can't find it but someone made a post about the "bamboo" ordinance...I have to admit when i first heard of the ordinance regarding bamboo and other non native "weeds". I was dumb struck that this was even on the radar with all the "real" problems we have in the town. My initial reaction was that someone near and dear to one of these idiots had a problem with a neighbor and took it upon themselves to change the law to re mediate the problem. I couldn't believe what i was reading and just shook my head.

Lisa -- At a past employer I wrote an entire story about what out-of-control bamboo can do (yes, it was probably a slow news week). But nevertheless, I interviewed a guy whose neighbor's bamboo had gotten so out of control that his in-ground pool was destroyed by the chutes, his sidewalks were ripped up and he faced five-figures of damage. The Brick ordinance doesn't ban bamboo, it simply says that one must plant it with the correct barriers so it doesn't traverse property lines. I don't often offer opinions on issues here, but on the bamboo ordinance, I at the very least have to say that there is a very good, valid reason why it has been passed.

I agree that closing the ramp should not have been the first answer. I think it was the most convenient for our town government. So, vote for the other guy, whoever that is in the next election. I voted for you and so did most of my family and friends. NEVER again. There is something very, very wrong with you. What is it? You need some psychological help or something because you really have no idea how much you are disliked in this township. Have you any idea how many kids use that boat ramp? I know a ramp in midstreams, one in herbertsville, one somewhere else but I still use that one. Are you going to close them also? It is bad enough that the MUA and OCUA closed off access to their spots, now this. What is next? A township income tax? A township sales tax? Aqualung, when the people of this township petitioned to stop the purchase of the Ice Palace, Steve took it very personally. I actually think he has a vendetta against the people of this town. He realized although he tried to blame all the democrats in town, that it was a majority of the towns people that said no to the purchase. This happened very early as you know in his administration and it's all gone down hill from that point on. I voted for him as did my neighbors and most of my friends. He will not have that support come re-election time. I predict the Democrats will sweep the elections in November, not because of any agenda they have, but as a stop gap measure to prevent Steve from doing any more harm to this town. I will also predict it will take a rock star of a politician of the Republican party for them to get hired for any position in this town, don't think that will happen for a long time! Steve and his band of merry men have left a taste in our collective mouths that will take years and plenty of Listerine to get rid of.

wookfish, Hose is placed into the water and the nozzle is attached to the pumper and fed through to the fire line. The closer to the water supply you are, the better the intake pressure to fill the tank. The truck then went to the fire scene and when the tank was empty they returned to the draft site for more water. Before we had hydrants, where did you think the water came from, the water fairy?

I've used that ramp for years and have never seen anyone do anything other than put their boat in and take their boat out. Who's defecating there? Seems the neighbors don't even know this is going on. Now that the ramp is closed I guess those who own kayaks will have to pay $10 to put them in at Traders Cove...And then kayak through a channel or under a bridge with boats blowing past them at 40 mph. Sounds like a safety consideration to me. I see plenty of people with kayaks at the Glenwood end of the river paddling through the branch that goes toward Forge Pond as well as the Mantoloking Rd side. Who will be responsible when one of them gets hit or swamped by a power boat coming past the Traders Cove ramp?
