Former WWE Star 'Carlito' Makes Appearance in Brick

Former WWE Star Carlito headlines a NWS wrestling event at the Brick Elks Lodge

Hundreds of eager wrestling fans packed the Brick Elks Lodge in a sold-out showcase featuring the best up-and-coming wrestlers of the National Wrestling Superstars Promotion.

The show was fast-paced and featured a number of high-flyers and wrestling brawlers including former WWE star Carlos "Carlito" Colon, who was making a rare Jersey Shore and independent wrestling appearance.

"I never did indies before, I worked for my dad and WWE so this is all new to me," said Carlito, who is known for his cocky apple-spitting antics and a high level of diverse wrestling ability.

Carlito acknowledged that part of his character is based off of his personality.

"My friends would say that the way I act on TV is like when I am drunk," he jokingly said.  "I consider myself a nice guy, its my way to vent."

Carlito is a second generation wrestling superstar who grew up in Puerto Rico, surrounded by the business. He got his start in his father's wrestling promotion, the World Wrestling Council.

"Being in Puerto Rico was cool because it was like a melting pot, we got wrestlers from Japan, Mexico, the States [and] Puerto Rico, so I got to see every mix," he said. "That's why my style takes a little bit of everybody, a little bit of brawling, a little bit of high flying, a little hardcore, more or less maneuver different styles and combine them."

While the NWS has its big names, the independent wrestling scene is mostly filled with up-and-coming talent, including one wrestler who goes by the name "Bobby Youngblood."

Youngblood, a Shore native, has been wrestling with the NWS promotion for the last four years.

"The crowds are great, it's a great wrestling town, they love the show, they love to get into it [and] push everybody. This is one of the best towns we've got," said Youngblood, speaking of Brick.

Youngblood took on another Jersey Shore local, Mike Dennis of the "Jersey Shore Jocks," in a one-on-one grudge match.

"Fans can expect a good match, a solid match out there and they also can expect to see Mike Dennis crawl to the back," said Youngblood.

His in-ring performance egged on the fans in attendance to the point where Youngblood received a chorus of boos until he eventually was defeated in one of the first of the night's grudge matches, setting a good tone for the evening.

The NWS's next event is set for May 6 in Manville, Somset County, at the Manville V.F.W and can be purchased at www.facebook.com/nwswrestling.
