Former Visitation Priest Indicted on Additional Sex Charges

Fr. Marukudiyil C. Velan, 64, indicted on seven counts

A Roman Catholic priest from Brick Township who was arrested in July 2012 on sex charges has been indicted on those allegations, as well as in two additional incidents – one of which includes a third victim.

The seven-count indictment against Fr. Marukudiyil C. Velan, 64, was handed up by an Ocean County grand jury Feb. 7, court records obained by Patch show.

Velan, who was known as "Father Chris" to parishioners at Visitation Roman Catholic Church on Mantoloking Road in Brick, where he last served, was arrested July 14, 2012 and charged with a single count of criminal sexual contact against an adult victim, and one count of criminal sexual contact plus one count of endangering the welfare of a child against a victim who was a minor.

At the time, Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said Velan, whose full name is Velanmarukudiyil J. Christudas, was arrested after a woman filed a report saying Velan came to her house and had "inappropriate contact" with her as well as her minor child.

The indictment contains additonal charges related to an allegation of criminal sexual contact that occurred in April 2012 with the same minor child, as well a charge of sexual assault against a second minor victim that allegedly occurred the same day as the original July 2012 allegation.

Velan was indicted on one count each of criminal sexual contact against a minor victim older than 13 but younger than 16, as well as a related charge of endangering the welfare of a child, stemming from the April 2012 incident.

He was also indicted on one count each of the same charges stemming from the July 2012 incident against the same victim.

Velan was indicted on a charge of second degree sexual assault against a child less than 13 years old, alleged to have occurred the same day as the other July 2012 incident. There was a related indictment on a child endangerment charge as well.

Finally, Velan was indicted on one count of criminal sexual contact on an adult victim in July 2012.

The victims were referred to by their initials only in the indictment. Patch has withheld those initials as well as the birth dates of the victims.

Court records show Velan remains free on $100,000 bail. No information was provided as to who posted his bail. The Diocese of Trenton said in a statement that it did not provide Velan's bail money.

Conditions of Velan's bail include having no contact with any victim or their family members, no contact with anyone under the age of 18 and the surrender of his passport. Velan is a native of India, the diocese said after the initial charges were filed in the summer.

Bishop David M. O’Connell has removed Velan of his faculties to minister in the Diocese of Trenton pending the outcome of the case, a diocesan spokesperson said.

Italian newspapers had stories saying he is resigning due to black mail. Who knows if that is true however this pope does have a history of sheltering molester priests from prosecution. Granted I'm not religious at all but I just can't figure out why anyone would still cling to such and outdated evil institution like the Catholic church. Most Catholics I have met just seem to go through the empty motions because thats what their parents did not out of any love or belief of the church.

Why does everything have to be a conspiracy? The man is 85 and ill. The job requires a lot of travel. The last pope John Paul II slowly died as the world watched. Maybe he just wants to die with a little more privacy and dignity.

It's ignorant to say that the Catholice church is an "evil" organization. I'm not very religious, but if there is one thing I learned in my 12 years in Catholic school is that the Bible teaches us to love your neighbor. If someone does something wrong, than it falls on them. Tell me one organization where nobody does anything wrong.

Shocking! No wonder the tides are rising.
oh we got trouble,
Right here in River City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for Priests.
He better make a good Act of Confession and say a few Hail Mary's on this one. And pray the tides don't once again arise and smite him.

That is so true. The majority of people who practice a religion do it because either their parents did it or it is popular in the area they live in. And too many of these people still have questions about their own faith they can't get the answers to.

A religion’s purpose is to create illusory fantasies for the poor. Economic realities prevent them from finding true happiness in this life, so religion tells them that this is okay because they will find true happiness in the next life. What nonsense.

Slippery Slope, this has nothing to do with politics, unless your talking about the politics of religion. This problem in the Catholic church has been ongoing for many years (I speak from experience) and someone needs to grow and spine and stop it once and for all. The church is a haven for pedophiles and once they allow priests to marry, the pedophiles will not longer have that hiding place!

Sal, no one can deny that the Catholic church has gone to great lengths to cover up the unfathomable counts of pedophilia in the church. So many have been covered up, the priests moved around, pope after pope covering up again and again. The children need to come first while in the womb and after they come out. It needs to stop!

I also notice too that with all the recent articles about teachers engauging in sex with minors there seems to be an absence of rage when it comes to them. Reguardless of who or what, they all need to be condemed and imprisoned for a long time. One is not worse then the other they are all monsters - equally. yes, the church did protected them, schools are protecting them and yes -we protect family members. That needs to be addressed by us all because it is everywhere.

There are all kinds of "sickos" in our society, but there is no doubt in my mind that there is a media bias against Catholicism. If Fr. Chris is found guilty, so be it. If not, let's hear all you religion bashers find some other reason to complain. BTW, rumor around the church was that the accuser dropped the charges. Anyone know anything about that?

We didn't "hold on" to the story. The indictments are physically picked up by a staff member at the court house periodically, forwarded to the editors and then reviewed. I reviewed the indictment files yesterday, confirmed the information and published the story today. Tomorrow, for example, you will see another story from the same indictment date on a different case. There's no conspiracy here.

If this is the second or third time for this church, that is only the tip of the iceberg. The institution SHOULD BE BLAMED!!! Until they absolutely and unequivically come out against the evil that lurks inside the doors of the church! For years those at the very top in the Catholic church have covered these crimes up, turned a blind eye and a deaf ear. When they take responsibility for the situation THEY themselves have created, only then will the church be able to move on.

Thank God, it wasn't another public school teacher for once. Every day you read about pedophile teachers and their sexual assaults and affairs with their students. Public schools exist only for government brainwashing of the liberal democrat agenda on poor peoples kids. All of the rich smart people send their kids to private schools, including politicians. Even the democrat politicians dont want their kids dumbed down and brainwashed by the public school system.

Bob you are right. But it seems that if you are a female teacher it's okay to have sex with a student. They get off with no jail time. Most of the men just say " Boy do I wish I had a teacher like that when I was in school." That's the problem. Most of the men are judges and they let these women off with a slap on the wrist. So maybe these same men were brought up Catholic and don't want to go to hell if they prosecute these sick men. They protect this all mighty money grubbing powerful church with every last breath. And that's why this so called men of God have been getting away with these ungodly unspeakable acts against innocent children all these years. Because people don't want to believe that such a good man can commit these things. But as we all now it is happening every where, in our homes , schools and churches. We need to wake up and everybody has to be held accountable. No matter if you are male or female. They need to be thrown in jail for these crimes. These are our children, our future, this is why our children are growing up so screwed up. It makes you wonder why these kids are going out and shooting up malls, movie theaters, schools and just any place. Maybe it's because our society is so screwed up. And we are letting "sickos" damaged our children!

I'm a parishoner of Visitation Church and I know Father Chris. I was shocked when this story broke, as were many of my fellow parishoners. I believe in the justice system. If he's guilty.. .he's guilty and will pay. If he's proven innocent, I hope he will be welcomed back by the Diocese. This doesn't shake my faith in the least. Everybody is quick to insult and vilify the Catholic Church, but we all know that child molestation happens everywhere.... like our SCHOOLS! I'm tired of having to listen to and read about people putting down religion. If you don't want to believe then don't. But please stop insinuating that a person of faith is a simpleton. Its Freedom of Religion NOT Freedom from Relgion. And in response to one of the previous posters who wrote that many people go to church because their parents went.... Well, my parents DID NOT attend church regularly.... more like never. I go to Church because "I" choose to go to Church.

Pedophilia acts in the Catholic Church isn't the only terrible sin going on in it. Add GREED and lots of it! My grandmother was a devout Catholic, she was also very very wealthy. Back in the late 1920's her church decided to build another church as they had outgrown the old one, The new church was a mini St. Patrick's all stone and very Gothic. My grandmother bought that church it's very large pipe organ, it was the largest in the state at the time and cost over $100,000 which was a lot of money back in those days, she also donated funds for two Tiffany stained glass windows. Those weren't cheap either. My grandmother also donated a large sum of money to that church every year for the maintenance of that organ which wasn't cheap and became more expensive as the years went by. Many years pass and my grandmother has a near fatal heart attack, the priest from that church was called to give the Last Rites, HE REFUSED, WHY? Because my grandmother and grandfather were married outside of the church, My grandfather was Episcopal and she was Catholic and the priest stated they were basically living in sin. WELL THAT DIDN'T STOP THEM FROM ACCEPTING THE ORGAN AND STAINED GLASS WINDOWS NOW DID IT! My father begged that priest to perform the rite I mean begged! The answer was NO. Amazing, they can hide pedophiles but couldn't bend the rules for a dying old lady! She survived, my grandfather converted at 78 yrs old, they left that church, should have been sooner in my eyes!

I can see a priest touching an adult parishioner inappropriately.
I can see a priest touching a kid inappropriately.

But I'm having a real problem believing that a priest visits a parishioner to provide comfort or solace, and then proceeds to touch a kid and an adult parishioner inappropriately in the same day. In the same visit.

Really??

And I ain't no fan of the catholic church right about now.

Knarfie: I agree that child offenders, molesters, etc. should be punished if guilty. But it is the "if" that I find disturbing. Many of the respondents on this site already have found Fr. Chris guilty in the court of public opinion. I'm a parishioner at Visitation Church and have met Fr. Chris many times, including at Brick Hospital when my wife was in for surgery. I find the accusations unbelievable. I'm not saying they are not true, but only that based on my experience I just can't believe he would do such a thing. All of us still live in a society where people are considered innocent until proven guilty…. at least I hope that is still the rule. This situation would not be the first time that someone has been accused, even by multiple accusers, of a wrong doing, only to be found innocent later on. And all the talk of a "coverup"! Seems people just can't help hoping the Church is implicated. Although I am not an "insider", I have never heard of any cover up. Maybe there is, but as one person, I just don't know. So instead of condemning the Church, priests and religion in general, let's all wait and let the judicial system do its thing. And for the non-believers on this site: I would rather go through life with the hope that there is an afterlife and live my life accordingly, than ignore any belief in a Supreme Being only to find out after death that I was wrong and wake up to eternal suffering.

knarfie

8:56 pm on Monday, March 4, 2013

Sal, I agree he should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. You must be aware, however, that the church has a history of moving offenders from one diocese to another to shield predators. This is the "cover up" to which I am referring. It is consistent with the handling of accusations.

Well, now i know why they need the money from the proposed cemetery. Perhaps the Church should implement more effective screening assessments for such tendencies prior to being ordained. Why not be more proactive? Many professions that interact with other humans require psychological testing. Maybe this already happens? I do not know, but if so, the assessment tool requires some fine-tuning.
