Fire Claims Harris Ave. House

Dog dies in evening blaze

A two-alarm fire claimed a single family home on Harris Avenue, a street off Burnt Tavern Road, Monday night.

Firefighters from the Herbertsville and Laurelton fire companies responded to the scene, according to Fire Marshall Kevin Batzel. The fire was first reported at about 7:45 p.m. and extinguished by about 8:30 p.m.

Fire inspectors came to the scene Monday night after the fire was put out, Batzel said, though details about how the fire started may have to be determined on Tuesday since it is difficult to conduct an investigation in the dark.

Brick Police Sgt. Terrence Covert said the owners of the home were not there at the time the fire broke out, and nobody was injured.

A dog that was in home did die, however.

Tax records showed the home was owned by James Nunziato.

Thank goodness no one was injured. If Patch can update what they need in clothing, I might be able to help, or if someone knows them . I can also donate a gift certificate to a food store.

look maybe you have never owned a dog but the dog does count, this is someone in my familydogs become part of your life. so dont say that Its hurtful to the one who lost what meant a lot to him You see i am this persons aunt. Yes he is alive and thats most improtant but his dog was imporant to him. If ya ever had a pet yu truly loved ya would not say that, But I thank god my nephew is okay,

@Jeanne Monari:

Well freaking DUH. I was calling the writer of the article out on not having any information about the dog. Pets are an especially important part of the family, and as far as I'm concerned an animal's life is just as valuable as a human's.

(And for the record, the article was updated a bit about the dog following my comment.)

No, the article was not updated after your comment. It has not been updated since last night.

Nobody was injured in the fire. A dog did, indeed, die. "Nobody" refers to people. There are one's personal feelings about animals, and there is a proper way of referring to people and animals in news stories. It would have been neither appropriate nor ethical, by any stretch of the imagination, to write this article in a manner that insinuates a person died when it was really a dog.

Thanks again for everyone's support!! The only thing aside from clothes now, at this point, would be $$$, or gift certificates... It's tuff to say what he needs, because I don't think he knows what he needs yet!! I believe it's gonna be a slow process in the realization of this tragic event!!

No female clothing... The only female that lived there was his dog Mia, who would sleep w/him every nite, he used to walk around w/her in his arms, she was a great mentor to my dog,Fry... Fry & Mia spent a few hours swimming in my moms pool w/ my 2 kids, just an hour prior to these horrific events!!!

Joey,
Please let your brother and you're family are our my thoughts. Mia is with our buddy Angus. It's extremely difficult when you have a tragedy like this and lose your family pet, your BFF. One of our family members actually died in house fire-I know what you're going thru & the best thing James can do: is one second, one minute, hour, day etc.,,at the time.. I know of a great therapist. PTSD sucks.

@Daniel Nee: Fair enough. Although, I'm aware it hasn't been updated since last night. I just happened to read the article, make the comment, and when I looked at the article again maybe ten minutes later it was changed slightly.

And of course, that makes sense to refer differently to people and animals. I just felt the article made it seem like the dog's death wasn't important.

I believe that was probably after we confirmed the dog had died.

We're dog lovers here at Brick Patch, don't worry. In my family we're still sad about our Brittany Spaniel, Ginger, leaving us a couple summers ago at age 15.
