Fines, Lifetime Ban from Pet Business for 'Puppies Galore' Pair

Pet shop animal cruelty case is finally resolved

The two operators of the former Puppies Galore pet store in Brick must pay thousands of dollars in fines and restitution, and have both received a lifetime ban from engaging in animal-related businesses.

Maria De Santis, 58, of Jackson, owned Puppies Galore on Hooper Avenue. Nathan "Nat" Sladkin, 72, of Farmingdale, was the store's manager. The animal cruelty cases against both were resolved last week.

On Jan. 26, 2012, authorities removed 39 puppies from the store – which was already closed due to health violations – after receiving a tip from a member of the public. The puppies were found to be sick and malnourished, officials said at the time, and some were taken to emergency animal hospitals for treatment.

The store's operating license was revoked after a special hearing before the Brick Township council a short time later, and a combined 42 counts of animal cruelty were brought against De Santis and Sladkin after the puppies were removed.

As part of a plea bargain with a special prosecutor, De Santis pleaded guilty to two civil counts for failure to provide a living creature with necessary sustenance in the form of veterinary care for sick dogs maintained at her store, as well as a municipal ordinance violation, NJSPCA President Rick Yocum said Monday in a statement on Monday.

She was fined $750 for the violations and ordered to pay $7,500 in restitution to various entities that provided veterinary care and sheltering for the animals, plus the prosecution of the case. She also agreed to a lifetime ban which prohibits her from "engaging in any business that is involved in the sales, brokering, or consulting of any domestic animals including dogs and cats in the State of New Jersey," Yocum said.

Sladkin pleaded guilty to two criminal crulety charges for failure to provide a living creature with necessary sustenance in the form of veterinary care for the sick dogs maintained at the store, as well as a municipal ordinance violation.

Sladkin was fined $1,000 for the violations and, ordered to pay $8,000 in restitution. He, like De Santis, also is now banned from participating in any business that deals with domestic animals.

"We are very pleased with the outcome, believe justice was served and appreciate the lifetime bans placed on both defendants," said Yocum. "I would like to thank the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter who was instrumental in helping us assemble the information to help us prosecute this case. We would also like to thank the special prosecutor assigned to this case for working closely with the NJSPCA and seeing this case to the end."

Yocum credited Lt. Thomas Yanisko of the NJSPCA’s Law Enforcement Division for being instrumental in bringing the case to resolution.

Neither De Santis nor Sladkin could be reached for comment. Several phone numbers associated with both had been disconnected or otherwise unavailable when a reporter attempted to call.

The case brings to a close Sladkin's well-documented and controversial participation in the business of selling animals.

A pet store he previously owned in Point Pleasant Beach, Pet Depot, was the frequent site of protests, and he had faced criticism in Pennsylvania on allegations that he sold dogs from so-called "puppy mills." He was also once profiled in the Wall Street Journal.

The Puppies Galore case eventually led to a ban on new puppy stores in Brick Township, as well as a state legislative bill that would more heavily regulate the business overall.

How can anybody treat animals like this? I just can't wrap my mind around it. I'm very thankful that they finally resolved this and neither of them can ever sell animals again. It just breaks my heart.

The way people treat animals and pets is often a reflection of how they treat others in society. Where there is abuse of animals there is often abuse of family, friends and others. Looks like these people need to do more than just pay fines.

This guy should of been put out of business years ago, for years and years of abuse. Finally, he got what was coming to him. These plea bargins got to stop. Forget about these fines. He should have had to suffer in jail, just like those puppies had to. He got off easy.

I think they didn't have enough money to operate the business, i.e. lack of sales. It is unfortunate that the animals had to suffer as a result.

It saddens me to see such cruel treatment of dogs. I love my dogs and they're like my family, mess with my family and you mess with me. I wish I had the room and ability to care for all the puppies that need a loving home but I don't. I can only pray that they all found permement homes and didn't end up euthanized.

Are they just banned in NJ? This man will just go someplace else. He is a repeated offender and should have served time. Disgraceful that it took so long to slap his hand! All of the heartbroken pet owners of his sick animals... and the suffering animals themselves have certainly paid a much higher penalty!!!

The ban is only in New Jersey. The court does not have jurisdiction over areas out of the state.

I can't believe its taken this long for the courts to catch up to him. He has been active in his shady business for long time. I seriously doubt he will not do this, or something like it, again.

I agree 100% Frances, jail time should be mandatory, the true punishment is to see what Big Bubba thinks of them when locked in a jail cell with no escape.

If I remember correctly he used to be the president of the Chamber of Commerce in Point Beach even though his store was picketed by animal cruelty groups on a regular basis.

We had to put our 15 year old Border Collie/Lab mix to sleep last Monday. We gave him 15 years of love and the best of care That's all he ever asked for, and in return he gave us his love and much happiness. He had a better life than a lot of people do. How anyone can mistreat a helpless animal is beyond me. These creeps got off easy.

I agree, this is just a slap on the wrist for someone that displayed cruel, callous and indifference to the health and well being of these poor little animals. His operation in Point Beach was protected by his association with the town politico, and for the years that he has operated in Ocean County, I wonder how long that political association protected him from the county.

And don't think for a minute that this single business was unique ... Nearly all pet shops that deal in puppies and kittens are just as horrific. Again, I say nearly all, not all. Look at these shops and note where the puppies were born - Kansas, Missouri, Iowa ... All home to puppy farms. The dogs are cruelly treated, caged, no social interaction. Many are the product of inbreeding, ill feed and cared for. The only way to shut this whole industry down is for people to educate themselves and stop buying animals from puppies stores. Look to private breeders if your taste is a particular breed, or head down Brick Blvd and visit the animal shelter and adopte a dog or cat.

Point Pleasant Beach gets what it deserves. Maybe if they would...just stop ignoring important issues the towns people would not be so negative. Instead they choose to play politicos at all cost.

This is what happens when "Point Pleasant Beach" airs their dirty laundry. You have all the local politicians and businesses getting everyone involved including the media circuit and local clubs.

You NEVER buy a puppy from a store. Are you people serious!? Do you think they are a pair if pants. If you need a dog... RESCUE ONE!!! People who buy from stores are the reason behind this mess. Do research on Pennsylvania puppy mills. It's where NJ stores get em from.

I think it should have been done to them, not to feed them and not get them any medical help. How can this happen to the puppies, etc. It shows that they don't have a heart and just want the money. All stores that sell puppies should be shut down. They will do it again and use a different name. It's so sad but to me an eye for an eye. They got off cheap, they should be in jail and had to pay more than what it states

Linny, if you are serious about finding a great lifetime pal, the safest way to a healthy pet is the animal shelter. They are all checked out by professionals, and verified healthy before they are ok'ed for adoption. You can spend as much time as you need, in an isolated room with your new pal, before taking it home. Since they are mostly adults, the house breaking stage is over. Like humans, their personalities are developed and quite fun. The best part is that if you and your new pet don't get along for any reason, the shelter will take them back, no questions asked. I hope you'll visit your local shelter before buying a pet from a "pet" store.
