Extra Security, Rules for Showing of 'Batman' Following Shooting

Brick PD will increase patrols, no masks will be allowed in Brick, other local theaters

Moviegoers will have to follow some extra rules if they are planning on seeing "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" Friday night.

Staff at the AMC Loews Brick Plaza theater said that masks which cover a person's face, as well as toy or costume weapons, will not be allowed inside following an incident Thursday night where a 24-year-old man shot and killed 12 people at a Colorado movie theater during a "Batman" screening.

Theater patrons will also be prevented from wearing costumes that could make other customers uncomfortable.

Fans of "Batman" have been known to wear masks and costumes that could include faux weaponry to movie screenings.

Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard said township police will have an "increased presence" near the theater as a precaution.

At the Monmouth Mall theater in Eatontown, similar rules will be in place, officials there said.

Eatontown Police Detective Lawrence Tyler said the police department always has two extra patrolman at the mall theater on Friday and Saturday nights, but there will be more units patrolling the area this weekend.

Eatontown Police Chief Michael Goldfarb had a meeting with mall management Friday morning and was told there will be extra mall security officers stationed at the movie theater this weekend and through the running of "The Dark Knight Rises."

AMC Loews, which owns both the Brick and Monmouth theaters, said in a statement Friday that customers can receive refunds or exchanges for tickets they've already purchased if they wish.

This is all fine and will make people more comfortable to go see that specific movie, but in reality this could happen at any showing of any movie in any theater in any city. This horrific tragedy was caused by a deranged man, and while the fear of a "copycat" is valid, someone could just as easily do this six months from now when the security goes back to normal. Theaters need mandatory metal detectors and exit doors need to be inaccesible from the outside of the building...and even if those measures had been in place here...this guy would likely have just picked a different venue to commit this atrocity. My heart goes out to those involved....its just beyond words.

Well now that's just an ignorant statement. This just goes to show the type of world we live in now. Let's face it. This could have happened anywhere at anytime. I must say as a father of four children I worry every time my children step out of the house. Ya' never know what some deranged people may have on their mind. Count your blessings, tell your kids you love them, tell your parents you love them, remember to tell your friends how much they truly mean to you, tell your family members (even the ones not so close to you) that you do think of them. The world is a bitter place. We all need to stick together. Be safe and God bless us all!!!

It is very sad for all the families in Co. My heart also goes out to them all. I do agree with you in reference it being way to much money. With the economy the way it is, no one knows for sure about their job, how long it will last and where their money will be coming from. With that being said, like you said it is much cheaper to stay home and have movie night for quality time, fun with both family and friends. Why can't some understand that not everyone can afford to go out, especaily those with large families.

The no ones busting out with guns in my living room..... That's ignorant. I totaly agree movies are way over priced and the Brick theatre is definately a s@it hole. And I do agree there is nothing better than the entire family gathered together watching a rented movie with some popcorn, fire place on in the winter months.. Kinda gives us something to look forward to with the winter ahead. Nothing better than the family all at home together bonding for a night! Love those times together!

Too bad none of the victims had concealed carry permits so they could at least defend themselves. You are a victim because you relied on someone else for your saftey. Let that be a lesson to everyone.

There is no way anyone in that theater with their own handgun would have stood a chance. This guy had head to toe bulletproof gear and a gas mask. The people were choking on tear gas amid chaos, screaming, and gunfire. I am sure its easy to say from the sidelines that someone there could have pulled a gun and shot this guy, but these people were taken totally by surprise in a dark theater....to say they were victims because they relied on someone else for their safety is sick and mean. Perhaps you should just be happy you or your loved ones were not involved.

I'm listening to these right wing gun promoters arguing that NYPD exported the same no gun mentality to Aurora,CO when they hired ex NYPD official as their Police Chief . If was up to them I guess every adult over 18 years of age should have been packing a piece or two. Just imagine people getting up or cowling behind questionable seat protection...pulling out there guns, giving the gunman focused targets to train his fire on, splattering anything around them. . . and possibly enraging him more to keep shooting. . .Overall: contributing to more screaming, running, and crawling...putting more people in arms way...bullets firing in all directions...not only from the gunman, but also now from the movie patrons.

That makes sense according to these gun promoters...and as another blogger already posted: he was wearing armor protection from head to toe. . .Cowboy 2nd amendment patrons in the audience trying to take careful aim in a dark theater with fusillades of bullets being fired at them not only from the gunman, but from other patrons as well..possibly putting others and themselves in the line of fire with the gunman?

Masks should never be allowed in public. once you turn in your guns then you become a slave to those who are bigger and stronger than you.

Did all those people die because of a mask?
Did the mask in someway contribute to these deaths?
If he was wearing a burka, would that now be banned?
Will the brand of shoes he was wearing be banned also?
Stupid rule by stupid people trying to solve the worlds problems one stupid touchy feely idea at a time.

Why does anyone need to conceal their face and identity in public. Does that not negate any effect the camera would have in catching a purse snatcher.

Ten years after 911 and we are back to this..who are you to question mentality. If you see someone with their identity concealed I would guess its because they are going to hurt you or do something they do not want to get caught at.

they are just taking safety precautions there's no need to go on a rant about why you can't wear your turban in the damn theater.
