Democrats Claim Victory: 'We Clean-Sweep'd 'Em,' Says Councilman-Elect

All four Democrats win, ousting GOP incumbents

The four Democrats running for seats on the Brick Township Council swept their GOP opponents, riding a wave of voter anger over tax hikes into office in a victory that swings the control of the township's governing body away from Republicans.

"We clean sweep'd 'em," said Councilman-Elect Robert Moore, who said taxes were the number one issue in this year's campaign.

"I want to bring Brick back to how it used to be," he said at a victory party with the Ocean County Democratic organization at the Tuscan House restaurant in Toms River Tuesday night.

Despite being out-fundraised and out-spent during the campaign – and the targets of harsh GOP mailers toward the end of the race – the Democrats handily defeated their opponents by a wide margin.

Attorney John Ducey received the most votes of any candidate with 9,172, according to data from the Ocean County Clerk's Office. The final vote tally is:

DELUCA 6,457
THULEN 6,204
SCATURRO 6,143
CATALANO 6,175

DUCEY 9,172 √
LYDECKER 8,570 √
FOZMAN 8,810 √
MOORE 8,921 √

Ducey said it came down to the issues, specifically taxes, and voters responded to the Democrats' message of cutting waste and cronyism.

"Luckily, the people of Brick decided that we had the ideas they wanted," Ducey said. "They voted for us and had confidence in us."

Ducey said the first goal when his team takes office in January will be to "look at the finances and the spending, and see where all of the waste and mismanagement has been going on, so we can save the taxpayers money."

"We plan on working with the mayor and seeing what, exactly, needs to be done in town," said Ducey.

Council President Brian DeLuca, who lost his bid for re-election Tuesday, said he wished the new team "the best of luck."

"The people wanted a change, and they voted that way," DeLuca said.

"I wish them the best of luck," he said of the Democrats. "In the end, what I want is what's best for Brick."

With their victory, the Democrats will claim a majority on the township council when they take their seats in January. The council will be split between the ticket elected Tuesday and three Republicans – Dan Toth, Joseph Sangiovanni and Domenick Brando. Stephen C. Acropolis, a Republican, will remain mayor and face re-election in 2013.

Congratulations to all the new Brick council members! Please follow through so that Steve does not have two tax payer funded jobs. Let him just have his appointed postion at the Toms River water company. He should not have two jobs. Actually, citizens of Brick should petition to have him removed as Mayor as soon as possible. If you agree, spread the word and get involved. What Steve is doing is not right.

Hopefully the new council will make the changes needed to bring Brick Twp. back to the town that it used to be. A proud place to live. Goodbye to the Republicans who when I tried to think about what they did the past 4 years, did actually nothing worth noting. That is something I remembered when I went to the polls to vote.

I really hope that this doesn't just turn into a "Dems beat the R's" situation. The people are not left with a lot of choice when it comes to elections. There are two parties and that is all that we are presented with. It doesn't matter what party they belong too. Do the job and do it right! This election should only show that the people are not happy and will do whatever it takes to change it. Party has nothing to do with it. If these new council members even start with political games, hiring of friends, raises, etc... it won't belong before we want their heads on a silver platter. What needs to come out of this is a showing that WE are watching closely and WE have the power, not them. Forget the Party line. We are in trouble financially and the ship needs to be righted and NOW!

Now the difficult work starts with making decisions that are right for Brick Township, rather than what is right for the paychecks for politically connected people in town. And in trying to repair the damage done to our town from years of mismanagement.

No more $50,000 or $80,000 raises to an individual person in a single year.

No more lying about handing out such raises.

No more political censorship of citizens by elected officials.

Now I can attend council meetings and not have to worry about not being allowed to speak during council meetings. Political censorship is wrong, whether it is in Cuba, China or Brick Township New Jersey. If your policies are based on sound principles, you should have no trouble defending them. There is no need to, or excuse for , lying about them. No one deserves a yearly raise that is larger than what most people make in a single year, (outgoing) Councilman DeLuca.

EVER.

PERIOD.

I think that is only fair, Mr. Smith. I've done the same thing myself over the years I've been voting, trying to find a politician(s) who says what they mean and means what they say. They are rare individuals. That is one reason I liked President Reagan so much. He stood firm on his core beliefs and did not waver on abortion, a strong military and some other issues. But there is a difference between making a concession in order to work with your political opponents and making concessions to the point where you have abandoned what you stand for. That is a fine line that not all politicians, or people for that matter, are able to achieve.

You don't know that for sure. We will see what happens. What really needs to come out of this election is the taxpayers need to get more involved, keep a close eye on our elected officials and make sure that they do what they claim that they will do. We, the taxpayers, have to accept some accountability for allowing those RINO's the ability to run rampent. We got angry and got involved by making a change. Now, we still have to accept the accountability to keep the newly elected officials on track. They need to earn our trust and loyalty. Personally, I am an Independent (registered Republican), but I don't care about "party" any longer. We just need the best people in place and forget about "party".

First, I congratulate the newcomers on their election. We needed to get rid of the monopoly the R's had. Single party rule is never a good thing to have. Second, our partisan form of government really restricts who will be our representatives. When we had non-partisan government (which was voted out courtesy of the Republicans over twenty years ago), anyone could seek office. And without a party designation on the ballot, voters had to consider the qualities of the candidate and what he or she offered rather than what party they belonged to. Plus, the role of party bosses was greatly reduced. Why should people not elected by the voters have such a strong influence about what goes on in our town? I look forward to a time when voters will once again consider a return to non-partisan government so that unaffiliated good people will be motivated to seek office, and the partisan patronage and nastiness we all witnessed this time around can be a thing of the past. Best wishes to our incoming council members. Do the right thing!

You politicians think that only other politicians can run a town. What we really need is what we got- 4 bright people with common sense who are not out to line their pockets with taxpayers money. The voters rejected experience in favor of integrity. And yes we know about the 40 year old pot charge.

Don't think they can, not on the administrative side. I think they also need a super majority to overide a Mayors veto, as in 5 votes.

You are right! There are union contracts that no one can break and policies that half the people do not even know exist. It will be difficult. I have not attended a council meeting but I have heard that many council members were disrespectful towards the attendees (citizens). There will be change but it will come in drips and drabs!

Full disclaimer: I am a Democrat and I am glad to see some Democrats on the Council again. I would be very glad to see an approximate balance in the number of Democrats and Republicans on the council-NONE of which were members of either the Brick Democrat or Republican Clubs. When folks are elected to positions within the town, they are there to act in the best interest of the citizens of Brick- not to feather ANYONE's nest- political or otherwise. I don't care about anyone's party affiliation, as long as they behave in an ethical, truthful manner.

The strategy of making personal attacks totally backfired. As much as the Republicans want to use the tax issue as the reason they lost I think the nasty mailers really disgusted many voters. Dredging up crap from 40 years ago when one of the candidates was a kid turned me off. Also "reveling" in someone's misfortune and monetary hardships is loathsome at best. A word to the Brick Republican Club, stop acting like goons. The Democrats were DOA only a few years ago. Better take a hard look at who or why the 4 Rs were soundly defeated. I sent an e-mail to one of the Council members and asked him who created those vile mailers. Whoever it was should be banished forever from any affiliation with any election. That person has nothing positive to bring to the table. Just my opinion. I am a registered Republican.

I agree with Denny D. I save all of these flyers both D & R. This campaign by the Rs was the worst. I think it really backfired and turned a lot of people off. The Rs wasted a lot of money on CR@P which in the long run probably helped the Dems. Goes to show you don't need a lot of money to win an election.

Based on this election. It is highly unlikely that Steve will be reelected Mayor. The Republicans need to find a replacement and quick for next Mayoral election. It is up to the Dems to put in a good performance once they take office. Unknowns can do an exceptional job if they put forth the time and effort. At least they are not trying to juggle two full time jobs. The Dems also need to bring in a strong candidate for Mayor.

I never had a political bone in my body, never cared really, they do what they do, but with what has been going on, I like others woke up. What really woke me up was at one of the Summerfest shows, they introduced Steve Acropolis and he was promptly booed, almost off the stage, I was shocked! It made me wonder just what was going on as in all the years of Summerfest, I had never heard ANYONE booed. The I started looking into things and found myself regretting that I had voted for him, which actually I had buyers remorse just a few minutes after I did cast my vote as I knew his reputation from school, I had no clue how bad things had become until that Summerfest BooFest.

As you know over the past few years the members of the current council have, talked down to people who got up to speak, treated them like children, and yelled at them. My statement was, if you think it is bad now wait for the NEXT FEW meetings. In other words, the OUT GOING council, is going to behave even worse then they have in the past.

My comment was NOTHING negative about the new members, I voted for them, I want change as much as everyone else does. Please dont put words in my mouth.

History would suggest that each "wing" of this system is broken - and shifting from one to the other and calling it "change" is yet another example of the total dissonance the voters in this country seem to be experiencing politically. The democrats and the republicans are two heads of the same beast. EVERY SINGLE ONE of them is corrupt. These new faces will follow the same path as the ones before them did because they simply carry out the instructions of those who put them where they are. Those are the same people that participated in Scarpelli's corruption AND the current corrupt regime. No "change" occurred yesterday. The vote simply extended the problem locally for another term.
In another year - these pages will be full of the same citizens bemoaning the same problems again. It's a shame - but once again we are reminded what became of Rome.

To Mayor Acropolos, what was the rush? council meetings happen only a few times a month. if the constituents of Brick Township couldn't ask questions during a meeting then what time were the people of brick going to be given to query their concerns. Mayor Acropolos is the most non-accesible public official i have ever seen anywhere. My advice to Mayor Acropolos, claim "lame duck" status now, because you too sir will be shown the door very soon.

If the new council is successful in cutting the mayor's salary, what will they do with the difference? Are all the "D" council members taking a full pay? And do people realize that the public workers & unions are part of the cause for the tax increase? New contracts are due at the end of this year....right?

Many Brick Township employees, both union members and non-members agreed to pay cuts and benefit cuts in order to prevent tax increases.
The tax increase is strictly due to fiscal mismanagement and poor financial planning over a ten-year period, as well as the outrageous rate increases from health insurance companies.
The workers work hard for their salaries and benefits and are not responsible for tax, borrow, and spend policies.

I'm all for a new council....if they stay true to their word. I'm just skeptical on the influence they will have. I never said public workers/police etc...don't work hard (some do not). I'm asking if the renewal of their contract which expires on 12/31/11 will have an impact on our taxes due to raises, benefits, etc.... As per current council, mayor, & public workers the tax cap increase was necessary to maintain services as they were. Does the new council - whom intends to implement a plan for regular road maintenance - expect to do this, as well as contract negotiations, with the $38,000 difference in the mayor's salary?
@ Sean...agreements were made to keep their jobs. Yes, mismanagement & poor financial planning does exist. I also believe that if they so concerned about saving tax-payers money, they would have called the mayor's & council's bluff on that issue, knowing they would be voted out in Nov. That tax vote was a joke. BTW, with or without a "D" council, property taxes won't go down. Money will just be moved around more creatively for a while. Township council should be about the best interest of the people in town, not republican vs. democrat. I wish the new council all the luck in the world, it won't be as easy as they think it will be.

Property taxes will never go down until the state pays for state mandates such as education, police, etc.

Some suggest having 21 county boards of education and 21 county police departments would cut property taxes drastically.

there are states that have county police and county school districts, Maryland is one. We have local districts and over 500 municipalities and that is the problem; each one has contract negotiations for pay, benefits, etc. We also have more superintendents, within each county than any state.

I am curious though if the people on this site are those that voted for or against going over the 2% cap. Perhaps they did not understand the referendum.

Maureen - If you remember back to that vote - 18,281 Brick residents voted on the school budget and only 16,692 voted on the tax levy; that's a difference of 1,589 or almost 10%. IMHO, the layout of the ballot was very confusing with the school budget being on the left with all of the other items up for vote, and the tax levy item was placed in the bottom right hand corner. I almost missed it myself.

This item needs to be brought up for vote again. If the voters again pass the tax levy, so be it. My feel feeling is that if it is stated clearly on the ballot, the measure will overwhelmingly be defeated.

Congratulations democrats on your victory Now please do the people's work...

@ me, the Doyle folks refer to is former Assemblyman and Brick municipal attorney John Paul Doyle who served our area in the late 1980"s and early 1990"s. He served alongside assemblywoman Marlene Lynch Ford who presently is the ocean county prosecutor. Though he's not presently holding any elected positions, he is still an active local attorney. At one point many, many years ago he resided in the midstreams section of brick, i remember delivering the asbury park press to his house for years. He is not related at all to the Doyle who was involved in the fatal accident with Anthony Briffa on Jordan Road awhile back.
