It's a lot smaller than it used to be.
The towering behemoth of Superstorm Sandy's destruction has been pared down in recent days as crews have worked hard to remove the trash from town and haul it away to the Ocean County Landfill for proper disposal.
But despite the drop in size, new debris is still being added to the pile as collections continue.
"I think everybody in town has had at least one pickup, some two pickups," said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis, who attended a meeting in Trenton on Tuesday with other officials to discuss cleanup efforts.
"As long as they allow us to do it in the fashion we're doing it, we'll continue to do it," Acropolis said.
So far, about 200,000 cubic yards of debris has been collected town-wide.
The debris collection has been provided by a FEMA-approved debris management contractor, AshBritt Environmental. The company has managed other disaster cleanups ranging from Hurricane Katrina to work at former nuclear missile launch sites.
The contractor has removed much of the debris from the pile using massive pieces of equipment.
"They were using those big 80 yard trucks and getting it out of there as quickly as they could," said Acropolis.
In all, AshBritt is estimating the Brick cleanup will produce 300,000 to 350,000 cubic yards of debris. That's down from an initial estimate of between 400,000 and 500,000 cubic yards.
For now, periodic debris pickups will continue in town, at least through the end of the year, Acropolis said.
"As long as people are putting stuff out that is storm-related, we're absolutely going to continue to pick it up," he said.

I had a tree fall on my house during the storm. Once it was cut down the branches sat in front of my house for weeks. I was under the impression they were picking up random neighborhoods at a time. My husband took a chance and called the township last Thursday and left our address. Our branches were picked up Friday, so maybe try calling. Hopefully it might speed up the process.

I just heard today they will cease, debris pick up on Dec. 21.This seems a little unfair do to fact people are still cleaning out their houses.

Agree. Absolutely. We were told the town would be cleaned by Christmas. I hope they don't fall back on that.

You heard some incorrect info. The collections will continue to AT LEAST the end of the year. I spoke with the mayor yesterday and, pending funding from the county/feds they'll go into 2013.

The pickup is not proceeding in any logical block by block fashion. The trucks pick up one house, skip four and pick up another. I am not in the position to judge but neighbors casually observed one truck occupant sitting smoking for 1.5 hrs. yesterday. I hope the subcontracters aren't bilking the system. I pray not. Again, I can't judge, but at the least it gives a bad impression. As stated in a prior post - it seems unfair that some homes are picked up and their neighbors aren't. The mold here is getting out of hand with all the bags and bags and bags and bags and bags and bags of leaves, debris and brush and I am outta town. My respiratory system literally cannot take this any longer.And I am fortunate that I do not any longer have anything in front of my home. We took our leaves and the town did pick up the brush from a fallen oak. (Neighbor's lot.) Why is Cedarcroft ALWAYS THE LAST DEVELOPMENT TO BE SERVICED WHEN IT COMES TO LEAF REMOVAL?????? To take a recycle schedule template and expect it to work as a viable schedule for leaf removal in a heavily wooded area is incompetent. That is not a Sandy issue but a Township issue. These public works guys have some mess now with the bags sitting since September, wet and torn all over the roads. It is totally avoidable if that person in charge of Parks and Recreation would use his head. Several of our development's residents have tried discussing the matter and he is vacilates between ominscience and ignoral.
